Downhill Skiing?

edited January 2013 in Vent
Some friends of mine are going skiing tomorrow and they just invited me to go with them. They're avid skiers, so naturally they're very good, always talking about the double black diamond hills they've conquered. On the other hand, the first time I was on downhill ski's (I do a lot of cross country) was last year and the whole time I stuck to the easier bunny slope. The first time I ventured onto the slightly harder bunny slope, I panicked, fell and that was the end of it. Now they're saying they can teach me and I'll be on the blue slopes by the end of the day. I'm just absolutely terrified. I hate heights, for one, and I'm scared I'll break something if I crash. Doesn't help that the only thing you ever hear about skiing on the news is deadly accidents. Everybody keeps telling me to loosen up and just have fun, but I'm kind of the type of person who worries about everything, it'll be hard for me to relax.

So, I guess the question is does anybody have experience skiing and do you have any tips for beginners? Anything you have to say I'd appreciate, help put my mind at ease.

 • I don't ski but I used to snowboard though never got very far with it, but the best way to fall down when you feel you going to fall is not putting your hands down since you can break your wrist, what you want to go if your falling backwards is to cross your arms over your body and then ball up your fists, falling forward you want to try and force your knees down as your in a kneeling position and gently place you hand down once your knees are on the ground.

If you start feeling out of control place both skis so then they are facing each other in a diagonal position this slows you down.

That's about as much as I know about skiing. But honestly if your scared you'll want to stay on the bunny slopes. In my whole 3years of snowboarding I never left the bunny slope except for once. Because I wasn't ready. Just do what makes you feel comfortable.
