What's the purpose of...

edited December 2012 in Vent
Ok so I'm not trying to start a debate as to if this is ethical or not (I personally don't like the idea, but that's just -my- opinion).

I've been looking through some online ads, and have come across multiple ads stating "puppies have all had their dew claws removed". Erm, why? Is there an actual purpose or reason to have this done?

  • I'm not 100% sure but I think in some dogs the dew claws can become ingrown and embedded and to prevent this they can be removed when they are puppies. I've also heard of working dogs getting them caught in something and tearing or ripping them off. Other wise I'm not sure what the reason would be. all my dogs have always had theirs intct and I've never had issues with it thus far.
  • It's generally done to prevent injury later on, or just for aesthetic reasons, the same way many people have tails docked or ears cropped because it "looks better". However, there is some evidence that having them removed can cause carpal arthritis - read "With A Flick of the Wrist by Chris Zink, DVM, PhD" it explains rather well what the function of the dew claw is.

  • Ah ok. Thanks to both of you.

  • All of my working dogs have had their dew claws removed. I know a lot of owners that haven't gotten it done and have regretted it later, especially on their hunting/working dogs. The dogs I own that still have it are always yelping when they play because it gets stuck in everything. :/ -Personal experience.
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
