I want my own dog...

Soo..I'm posting a copy of the post I made elsewhere, so it's not as personal as I'd usually be with you guys :p
Anywho though, content is the same.(:

Well..I dropped out of my trade school and start a $9 an hour full-time job tomorrow..and I'm interested in getting my own dog. I've trained my cousin's dogs and the only time I ever really go out and about without my car is with the dogs. I'd like to get back into shape a bit more and I think having a dog at home would be great for that and help out a lot. I'll have enough money to pay for my car, take care of the dog, and pay for my general needs (food, personal items, etc).
The possible problem is that my mum is terrified of dogs..especially one's any bigger than a yorkie or something (which I can't stand small dogs). It'd be staying outside in a kennel (blankets, bed and all) and I'd be taking full responsibility for it. My yard is fenced already and we have a deck with fence around the pool as well.

What I'm asking is how should I sweet talk my mum into allowing it to happen? I know how to properly train it, I'll cover all costs, I'll be responsible for all cleaning/care, it'll most likely deter the intruders that seem to want to come in our yard (I'm going to threaten to shoot em if I see them), and it'll help me get back into shape because I'll have to walk/jog it. That's what I currently have on my list to try and convince her, can anyone think of anything else?
I'll most likely be getting one from the humane society we have here or a half hour away (will be looking in both), because I'm not interested in buying from a breeder right now, as I'd like to save up good money for my next dog, which will be either a hound, lab, or beagle bred for hunting/bird retrieving.

  • You could add love and affection, and the fact that it would teach you a great deal about responsibility. Also, the fact that you'd be saving a dog's life. Or, you could wait until you're out and in your very own place before accepting the challenge of a new dog. xD I had to wait until I was out of my mom's house before getting my own dog. She wouldn't budge in the matter, but I wish you more luck then I had!

Also, you could borrow a puppy from a friend and bring it home to test your mother's reaction. If she flips out and starts flying stuff at you, tell her it isn't your dog. If she doesn't flip out then feel free to bring a new puppy home, because her reaction wont be too bad. ;p

LOL
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD

I tried that once... my mom nearly had a cow xD
  • Well, I once had to convience my parents for a dog and what I did was sit down with them and discuss what breeds are out there and which ones they think were "cute, friendly, active, protective etc...". I offered a lot of advice on each breed and actually had a book with all dog breeds listed with info. and pics. After talking (w/o making any solid plans) it really loosened them up to the idea. My dads girlfriend was bit by a golden retriever (I know right), and has a sincer fear of dogs because of that.

After talking for a couple months, then came a visit to the local animal shelter. That way we all got even more use to the idea. Be careful though, the numerous amount of dogs barking can be intimidating (for the fearful). A few visits over the next couple months got easier and we decided on getting a puppy vs. a large dog. My dads GF was afraid of large breeds, so the puppy idea was great.

(We never got a dog, due to me graduating and moving 500miles away. HOWEVER, if I would have stayed, this process would have worked.) : ) haha hope this helps! Just remember, some people just arn't dog people and it takes time and patience to get them comfortable enough with the idea.)
