Dock Jumping Help

So, my RL dog Lucky is currently extremely bored. I tried weight pulling with him, but he obviously isnt a weight puller. So now I am thinking of doing Dock Jumping because he can jump high and far and he is very fast. Only problem is, I have no idea how to train dogs for Dock Jumping. Does anybody know how? Or have any suggestions?

 • I've never trained a dog in dock jumping, only watched the event, but here is a website recommended by my local dock jumping club for some training articles/pointers. <a href="http://sportmutt.com/training/DockJumpingTraining.htm"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://sportmutt.com/training/DockJumpingTraining.htm

Of course the biggest thing to make sure of: does he like the water/can he swim well? Dock Jumping is a toy-motivated sport, so make sure you have a toy that floats that your dog is nuts about, otherwise he won't follow it into the water. And of course never force your dog into the water if he doesn't want to go, it has to be on his terms otherwise he won't think this is a very fun thing to do!

Another idea for a sport that would engage your dog both mentally and physically is agility. My boy just had his first class tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Or you could look into tracking/K9 nose work, as those are also events that would be good mental workouts but not as physically demanding, if he doesn't take to the more active sports.

He loves to swim, which is why dock jumping came to mind. He has a toy, but I am not sure if it will float, so we may have to look into that. And I never thought of the agility classes, I may try that as well. I think he should be in more active and energy demanding events as he is always extremely hyper, so hopefully it will help dial down his hyper level. And thanks for the link and all of the help!
