Can somebody please help me?

edited August 2012 in Vent
Soo my knucklehead of a puppy thoroughly enjoys chewing on his front legs like they're chew bones >.> I of course stop him each time I see him do it, but I had to leave today and he was by himself. When I got home, I went to give him a bath, and noticed that he made a dime sized wound (it's not deep at all). I washed it out with warm soapy water, and put some peroxide on it. It's a dark pink, and it looks like it has just a little infection in it. Can I put antibacterial ointment on it and bandage it with gauze? I googled wound treatment for dogs and it said I could put the ointment, but I'd rather get an opinion from some my fellow vpians.
Thanks for any help

 • Could be an allergy to something in his feed. My dog chews on her back leg until it bleeds due to an allergy to something in her dog food.
 • I would put an ointment if you feel necessary but don't bandage it, leave it open so that it can air out. I would start looking at allergies or seperation anxiety, although if you're able to catch him doing it then that's probably not it. Your best bet for now would be to clean it and leave it to air out and heal and put him in a cone so that he doesn't lick it

 • In the future, I wouldn't use peroxide on a wound. Peroxide kills healthy tissue as well as bacteria. If a wound needs to be washed, mild soap or an animal formulated anti-bacterial is best for cleaning wounds. For my dogs, unless a wound is large, deep or actually dirty, I don't even worry about cleaning them. Within minutes, the dog will be back to licking it, laying, sitting or rolling on it or otherwise introducing bacteria to it.

I wouldn't worry about ointment, the wound isn't very large and if you can figure out what is making your dog chew, will heal by itself pretty quickly. You want it to scab over, so don't cover it. Besides which your dog would probably just chew the bandage off. It probably looks a little dark because it's irritated, not necessarily because of infection.

I would second or third it being an allergic reaction to something. Food sounds like a good place to start, as I assume he's flea and tick free.

 • Ok thanks guys. It looks a little better today. I'll look into the whole food allergy thing.

 • It could be an allergy to a food like said above but, it could also be, Acral Lick Granuloma. I highly doubt it but My dog started doing the same thing, he constantly would lick both of the top of his paws, raw. And we couldn't get him to stop. If we put bandages on with ointment, he would just tear them off and continue licking, so I looked into it and found a condition called Acral Lick Granuloma, which is pretty much where certain things cause the dogs to obsessively lick a part of their body raw.
This is an article about the disorder: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lick_granuloma"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Article
Now, I'm not saying your dog has this, actually he probably doesn't to be honest, but it could possibly what is wrong and knowing about this condition could help ya out ^.^
My dog still licks his paws once in awhile but we correct him, and he doesn't do it as much as he used to.
Here is an image where you can see the hair-loss patches on his feet (they were healing at that moment)
<a href="http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa387/TiffanyMiddaugh1993/Lucky and Hemi/IMG_0063-1.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url">Click
At one point his feet/legs had multiple patches and they were just horrible and they looked raw and red, but he would continue licking them..
:// very weird, but kind of OCD in dogs.
I hope this isn't the problem though because from the research I have done, it's a very hard problem to treat (on the physiological side of it).

 • Ouch! Poor pup :/ I don't think thats it. He just puts his leg between his jaws and chews, like it was a Nylabone or something O.o
Thankfully, the sore he has is now clean and very well scabbed over.

 • yea Roadrunner would chew on his spots also, but I kind of figured that wasn't what your dog had. Which is a good thing! ^.^
Just thought, just in case.
Hope we gets better, and stays well <3
