Another addition...(Sugestions Wanted)

Yep, I am getting another puppy:) My current little guy, Lucky, is sadly bored since we put down my two Border Collies due to old age, so I am going to get him a playmate. I have a few dogs from local shelters in mind, but I wanted your opinion on what type I should get. Lucky is a Beagle/Dauchshun/Hound mix and is FULL of energy and playfulness. I am looking for a dog who will play with him all day, but is still extremely kind, gentle, and loyal and who will be Lucky's best bud. I am also loing for a dog who will hopefully calm down as they mature, but not to a couch potato as I take my dogs running, sporting, and everything. I am surfing the adoption centers near me right now and will post my 'contestants' once I get a few sorted out, but for now, what breed/mix should I go for? And what gender(I ask because I heard something about gender making a huge impact on the dogs relationships, but I don't know much about it.)?

Currently Looking At-

<a href="http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/23665175"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Chihuahua/Terrier Male Mix(Farthest on Right in Photo)
<a href="http://nokill1.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs/adoptable/534/1845/Rosie"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Retriever Female Mix

 • From my experience things usually go better if the dogs are opposite genders, so your current dog being a boy I would suggest looking for a girl (hopefully both fixed so there aren't concerns about being bred). I would also look for another dog that is of similar size (or will be when full grown) that way your current dog doesn't feel as intimidated. Similar ages would be another suggestion, just because having a mature dog and putting a puppy in the picture tends to get complicated as the puppy would constantly want to play (if that's the energy level they have) unless you truly think Lucky would enjoy the constant energy

 • OMG, if those terrier mixes were black, they could be Alex. As a terrier, doxie, chihuahua mix, he has loads of energy and has the small dog "I'm as ferocious as a big dog" attitude. But, he can be the sweetest thing and always wants to be near people, if not in their laps, if he can't entice them to play with him first. When Buddy, our big dog, was alive we'd often find Alex laying on him. If anything, his stamina and playfulness has increased with age LOL At least as a puppy, he'd take naps without having to be told to go lay down.

We've usually had all males or males with a single female, all neutered, so you should be fine with either gender. <img src="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/s720x720/391322_10151111215705818_424245227_n.jpg"; alt="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/s720x720/391322_10151111215705818_424245227_n.jpg"; class="bb-image" /> This is when he was about 4 months old, but he'll still take on any dog in play and invites it LOL <img src="https://fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/423407_10151111226055818_846021073_a.jpg"; alt="https://fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/423407_10151111226055818_846021073_a.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

 • I would say any dog you have in mind, let your boy meet the other dog in a park or somthing, its not only based on the enegry levels of the dog you pick, its better to know they will get along... The male female thing it depens on the dog like my girl gets on with a another female, yeah they may have their I'm boss times, but they still get along great, this is a ACD/NZ hunt/Beardie whos med and a Mastiff/Dane whos huge in size..

Maybe your dog is used to lots of other dogs around him/her but not every dog is.

Just something to take my mind while your picking, an older dog or even a puppy.

 • Hanks for all the suggestions. I am looking for small-medium dogs since that is Lucky's size and preferably a dog between 4 months-1.5years(Lucky is 1.2 years) I appreciate all the help! I will post more dogs I am looking at as soon as I can so I can have everyone's input.
 • The most important thing is to let your dog meet any potential candidates and see how they interact. On paper a match can look great (same ages, sizes, etc) but it may fall apart upon introduction. My boy is a prime example of this, as he is very picky about which dogs he will be comfortable around. He's medium-sized (25lbs) but really tends to get along best with larger dogs. Except for labs. Sometimes dogs his size are ok, and most often dogs that are smaller he runs away from, no matter how well-mannered they are. When he met a puppy of his same breed, he couldn't get away from it fast enough, even though the puppy was just wagging its tail and not being overly physical with the greeting.

Also some dogs will be fine meeting in a "neutral" setting--park, shelter, etc. but once you get the new one home there could be some territorial issues, as the first dog may not like someone new invading his home. My friend's dog is like that; she plays well with others in the park, but if they come into her home she pushes them around, smacks them in the face, etc., telling them she is not happy that they are in her home.

I can understand the territorial issue. Lucky is pretty territorial, so hopefully it won't be too bad if I introduce them the right way. Thanks for the help!
 • I would go with the Retriever Female Mix.
