>.> My freaking horse

edited August 2012 in Vent
I love my horses to death but lately I've wanted to destroy one of them.
Knip is my main showing boy. My spaz. My psychotic weirdo.

Le spaz:
(ignore the sweatyness lol we has just gotten done with a ride)

<img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/knip4hnoface.png"; alt="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/knip4hnoface.png"; class="bb-image" />

I do some fairly high-end shows with him but lately he has been a NIGHTMARE!
We can jump 4ft+ easily normally...but for the past few weeks he has been rushing fences, refusing, taking up wrong leads in the oddest spots, etc. etc. etc.
No, he's not hurt. He has no medical problems. Nothing logical could be causing this other than him just deciding he wants to be a BRAT.
Some days he's perfectly fine, no issues. Other days he's INSANE.
He is a VERY high strung horse who is strong and generally a spaz anyways but he's just a little too over the top some days.
>.>

I've been taking him over flipping cross rails and one footers just to get him to calm down and get him controlled again. He's not great on the flat because of his energy but I find myself having to work him on the flat more and more just to get him to focus.
Hopefully this just ends up being a weird stage and he starts getting it together really quick.

Anyways...there's my rant about my weird horse >.>

 • I dunno how he is but maybe you should try a trail ride or a change of scene. He sounds blown out. When Rosie woulnt settle into a trot me trot on the trails nonstop. The next day she's always perfect.
 • I agree with Vampy. I have worked with horses my whole life and one thing that always seems to calm a horse down is a nice ride or something different from the daily routine. I recently was working with a stallion for a friend of mine and he was such a brat, he wouldn't do anything. He was well trained and perfect, but he turned out to be just tired of the constant routine my friend had him on. The next day, we went out for a trail ride and after that, he was doing everything I asked him too. I have only had one horse who wouldn't listen to me for anything, even after trail-rides, and he was stubborn as a brick. He just wouldn't listen.

Either way, try a different routine with him the next time you ride him. Take a day off from jumping or whatever your normal routine is:)
 • I had the same problem with Fendi since she is off the track.
She would do the same thing, but before I even got on her I showed her every single jump.
Then I would do troting poles and raise them a little bit. Next I would put up tiny Xs .
I wouls half halt every three-four steps so that her ears were facing me and not so focused
on the jump which can relax them. I now jump 6ft but sometimes she jumps like a deer
so what I do is trot her in a circle, and I ask her to put her head down low so
she is thinking about that not thinking about how high she wants to jump. Lol
Like Vampy said I would switch the things up, a lot of horses are very smart
and if they get bored they will make it fun themsleves like he is doing to you.
So just switch it up a little so he thinks : oh were not doing that again.
If you have any questions PM me! I have been riding for 10+ years in english.

 • Like vamp and cec said, he is probably just bored. xD pumpkin did that before we moved and now we just fly bareback down trails. xD he likes the change. He has been a lot better in the ring and allowed me to take him over 3.3 for the first time in forever, since we have been doing that. :D
