Another story entered! Thank you!

Because several people expressed disapproval to me ending it a day early, I'm going to continue on with the original date. That said, since I'm going on vacation, I'll try to distribute prizes when I can get to internet. If I can't, then it will be in approx a weeks time.
Thank you to all who have entered my contest! It is fun reading the stories you've put my characters in. I've read most of the stories already and will e rereading them before placements are made. I've got a lot of reading ahead of me. Several of them have been really long - and that makes me happy! I had planned on choosing winners tomorrow, however I'm leaving bright and early in the morning and I should really get to sleep. Again, I really, really appreciate you all entering. This was my first time hosting something like this and it has been fun. I should return home on Aug 19. So, unless I get internet somewhere on my trip, prizes will probably be distributed then. Training will definitely have to be done when I get back.

Here are the complete entries I've recieved. If I've missed you for some reason, let me know.
Entries:
tiny dancer
Paranormal Wolf
Cecctl2
Aziu
iRawrSkittles

By: Paranormal Wolf

Inu Tails
Para Wolf

It was that time of year again; time for the two biggest rival high schools in Japan to face off in the annual sports festival. Inuoshi Academy held the title as top school for 5 consecutive years … Until last year that is; when Koinumuyo Academy took the title in a whirlwind of excitement. It had all come down to a relay race. The two schools where neck in neck and at the last second a burst of energy and speed came from the top athlete of Koinumuyo and in a matter of seconds Inuoshi's luck had ran out. This year was time for retaliation, time for Inuoshi to regain its honor as top school yet again. However the winds of change had blew something strange into the school.

An unusual group of students graced the halls of Inuoshi early in the year. They were Americans who's families had moved to Japan. While strange they were fully fluent in Japanese and harbored the same secret as the other students. While Both Inuoshi and Koinumuyo Academy are in Japan they are separated from the human world through a magical seal. In this place students possessed an odd ability; their true from is not human though they often appeared as such. In reality everyone in this world is a canine shape shifter and that quality unites the odd Americans with the Japanese students, in this way they are one in the same.

Outside the Americans sat together under a large tree. They had adapted quickly to Japanese culture and were enjoying lunch. Preston sat quietly, watching some other students as they gathered into small groups. His shaggy black hair brushed the tops of his glasses as he lost himself in some secret thought. He hadn't noticed that Addison sat down beside him. Her long sandy brown hair blew slightly in the wind, her bright green eyes settled on Preston's slight smile. She had grown quite fond of him but was rather shy so kept her feeling quite for now. Owen was busy stuffing his face, his emerald eyes fixated on his food as his shaggy red hair glistened in the sun. Daryn had already finished her lunch and sat with her knees pulled up as she rested her chin. Her sky blue eyes were soaking in the scenery. After finishing his lunch Owen tugged at her ponytail of blond hair as he asked “So are we still meeting up after school to run laps or what?”. Daryn snapped out of her daze to answer “Of course, we need to get in top shape if we want to compete in the sports festival. Addison, Preston you guys in?”. Addison nodded a silent reply as Preston continued to stare off into the distance. “Hey Preston have you gone deaf?” Owen teased. “No I heard you, was just thinking about something but sure I'm in.” He finally replied as he pushed his glasses back up his nose. Owen gave him an awkward look “why do you wear those things man? Your eyesight is as good as gold.” Preston smirked “Only in dog form, I can't see squat without them if I'm human.” The girls giggled as Owen nodded “Oh I see, didn't know that... So umm I'll see you all at the tract later, I've gotta do something before next class.” and with that his tall muscled body jogged out of sight.

Daryn stretched her arms above her head, finally resting them behind her back. She looked at Addison and asked “Hey Addi, what sport are you going to sign up for?” Addison looked up with gentle eyes “You know I'm not really sure. I'm not good at anything really but I do want to join in. Daryn sighed “Oh Addi you're always putting yourself down. You're good at a lot of things. Lets see … I know you're fast and pretty light on your feet so agility would be kinda cool.” Addison's eyes brightened “Really you think so? … Hmmm I can give it a try.” she blushed and hesitated before finally asking “Hey um Preston? You wanna do agility with me?” His olive green eyes seemed to dance with delight “Sure Addi I'd love to.” Addison smiled “I'm glad, I really feel better with someone with me. Thanks Preston, you're the best”. Preston had a huge smile on his face as he turned to Daryn “What about you and Owen, what events are you guys going for?” Daryn stretched her legs out as she replied “Oh you know Owen, he's a big guy with a lot of strength so he already signed up for weight pull. I'm in a disc kind of mood so I'm going for that. Hey you guys make sure to sign up for events before coming to the track ok.” the bell sounded “Well guys back to class see you later.” With that Daryn sprinted off as Addison and Preston causally gathered their books and strolled back inside.

A similar scene unfolded at Koinumuyo Academy as a group of students gathered after class. Koopa stood with his back against a tall cherry tree, his dark chocolate eyes scanning the crowd for his friends as he brushed a hand over his sleek ebony hair. He spotted the three and gave a shout “Oi Kuma, Tenchi, Mika over here.” Tenchi perked up at the sound of Koopa's voice and his creamy blonde hair bounced as he trotted over, his dark eyes fixed upon Koopa. Kuma was more reserved, his ice blue eyes met with Koopa's as he slowly made his way over. The sun reflected from his grizzled hair as Mika followed behind him, her soft hazel eyes looked all around as her red sesame hair swayed along her chin. The group gathered around their kind but firm leader as he spoke “Alright I've signed us all up for the sports festival. I'm fairly strong so I'm going for weight pull. Kuma I've seen how high you can jump so I though disc would be a good match. Mika you and Tenchi are pretty fast so agility is your sport. I do want us to win, we're the best athletes at the school so lets hold on to the title we won last year. If no one's busy lets all go for a swim so we can get our muscles toned up.” All three nodded in compliance and they headed toward the pool in the center of town.

Back at Inuoshi Owen, Daryn, Addison and Preston had gathered at the track. “Alright guys lets go into dog form and have a nice long run. I think 30 laps should do it, after that we can hit the pool... I think its close by.” Owen was excited as he spoke. The group nodded and one by one they changed forms. Daryn was the first to change. Where a senior in high school once stood a lively golden retriever with a gleaming blond coat stood in her place. Their transformation is easy, in the blink of an eye they can change forms at will. Everything they had as a human is still with the human form which is now locked inside and though they are dogs they can communicated with each other telepathically. Daryn sent a message to the others “Come on guys hurry up and change. I want to start running. I've got tons of energy I need to burn off.” With that the others changed form as well. Preston pushed his glasses up his nose before changing into a small bouncing black Scottish terrier. “Its been too long since I've been in this form, feels good to have all four paws on the ground”. Addison giggled sweetly as her paws hit the floor. She wagged her springer spaniel tail as she sat close to Preston. Her soft white coat was splashed with sandy markings and her sandy soft ears swayed as she moved. “Well I guess I'm the last one.” Owen stretched before changing; a red and white Alaskan malamute towered over the others. “Alright guys lets get going, remember 30 laps.” Owen barked as he sent them the message and took off in a flash, the others falling in behind him.

The pool was rather empty as koopa, Kuma, Tenchi and Mika trotted in together. “Just the way I like it, not too many people. We practically have the place to ourselves.” Mika's voice was soft and sweet as she dipped a toe in and out of the water. “Seems like it, shall we all change and go in?” Kuma inquired in a soft but steady voice. Koopa scanned the pool for a bit, his soft chocolate eyes taking in everything “I don't see why not, last one in is a rotten egg.” He teased before jumping. Mid air his chiseled body changed from that of a senior high school boy to that of a sturdy black and white pit bull terrier. Koopa landed with a splash as he paddled around the pool. “Well what are you guys waiting for? Come on in.” Tenchi dropped to the floor, turning from a rather short boy into a short cream colored pekingese. His bushy tail wagged as he carefully got into the pool. Kuma's ice blue eyes turned to Mika “After you.” he motioned toward the pool. With that Mika shook her chin length hair before she jumped in as a lively red sesame Shikoku Inu. Kuma let out a sigh before changing. He leaped in as a wolf grey Siberian husky. All four paddled around, nipping and playing as friends do.

“Alright guys I think that's enough exercise. How about we go back into human form and relax for a bit?” Koopa's message filled their minds and they all barked in agreement before shifting forms. The group lounged at the side of the pool. Koopa sat with his legs swishing in the water. Tenchi settled in a poolside chair as Kuma and Mika grabbed a few floats that drifted by. A few people moved in and out of the pool room as Owen, Daryn, Addison and Preston entered. They took a moment to check out the place before making their way over to the water. Koopa and his group focused on them as they approached. “Hey don't mind us we're just going to swim and relax” Daryn's voice came out a bit harsher than she meant as she spoke to Koopa. He raised an eyebrow to Kuma before answering “Its fine we already had our fill of swimming... I've not seen you around, which school do you attend?” Daryn was already swimming away so Owen spoke up “Oh we're from Inuoshi Academy. And you?” Koopa had a half cocked grin on his face “Funny you should say that, we're from Koinumuyo... you know the rival school. You guys aren't entering the sports festival are you?” Addison looked at Preston a bit nervously as she bit her lip. He whispered to her “Its ok lets get in the water, Owen can do the talking.” With that the pair swam to meet Daryn and Owne eyed Koopa up and down. “Actually yeah we are, just signed up today... Why?” He crossed his arms in defense. Koopa chuckled “Well its just you guys don't stand a chance. We beat your school last year and we're going to do it again. Besides you guys are American right? I hear American dogs are pretty weak.” Owen puffed up in defense, his face flushing with anger. “What's that got to do with it? I'm sure you guys aren't just Japanese breeds are you? Besides you don't know us or our breeds.” Koopa still had a half coked grin as he chuckled “I'm not talking about breeds, just the fact you guys were born and raised in American right? Just saying I hear dogs over there are soft. Anyways we've been here long enough, my feet are getting shriveled from the water. We'll settled this in competition.” Koopa looked at his friends “Come on guys lets hit the road.” and with that they left before Owen could say another word.

Owen was fuming as he kicked at the water from at edge of the pool. “Can you believe that guy? Saying we're soft and weak because we're from America. Guys I don't care if our school wins or not just as long as we out do that group.” Daryn swam up and rested her elbows on the side of the pool “Its ok Owen you know how good we are. Besides we're the top athletes at out school, those guys don't stand a chance! Right Preston?” Preston seemed a bit flustered “Uh right we can do it.” Addison gently sprinkled some water on Preston before she spoke up. “Lets just do our best and see how it goes.” Owen had a grimace on his face “Yeah well our best better be better than their's. We have two weeks before the festival. Lets run laps after class each day. That will keep us in top shape.” With that the group nodded and went quiet.

Over the next two weeks both groups prepared for the competition. All the athletes from both schools were in top shape and ready to give it their all. The morning dawned on the day of the sports festival and everyone gathered on the grounds of Washimusho, a smaller academy that hosted the event. Spirits and energy ran high for all the students. Koopa was waiting with Kuma, Tenchi and Mika in the gym as the officials were getting everything ready for the day's events. His soft mocha eyes spotted Owen as he entered with Daryn close by. Preston and Addison entered shortly after. “I wonder what events their in, wonder if we'll be competing against them directly.” Koopa asked without turning to face his group. Tenchi was full of energy as he answered “Why don't we go find out?” Koopa smiled “I think we shall.” He was the first to take a step but the others fell in line behind him. He drew close to Owen “Oi, I was wondering if you guys would show up. So just curious what events did you sign up for. We're going to beat you no matter what but would be nice to compete directly with you.” Owen scowled “Well what happened to good sportsmanship? Anyways I'm doing weight pull, Daryn is going for disc and Addi and Preston are in agility.” Koopa had a wide grin on his face “You don't say. Well you'll be up against me in weight pull. Kuma is going for disc and the other two are in agility. Looks like we will be directly competing. Oh and hey I'm a good sport, may the best dogs win, but I’m just telling you its going to be us.” And with that Koopa walked off and Owen was once again left stewing in anger.

The loudspeaker sounded and a voice boomed above the crow “Hello and welcome to the annual Inuoshi Academy verses Koinumuyo Academy sports festival. We have a great lineup of events for the day so lets get started. Will the racing competitors please report to the track, after that we will hold the weight pull competition followed by dock jump, distance disc and last but not least agility. Good luck and lets have fun.” Preston looked a bit uneasy “Well looks like you'll face Koopa first, then Daryn goes against Kuma and last me and Addi are up against Tenchi and Mika. I wonder what breeds they are, no one knows yet.” Owen didn't answer at first but then nodded “Lets get to the track and watch the race. We'll cheer on our school and each other through the events.” And with that they exited the gym and hit the fresh air as they walked to the track.

Everyone had gathered round as mainly greyhounds and salukis took their place on the track with an odd breed here or their. Daryn pointed “Look there; the white greyhound with the green vest. That's our schools fastest sprinter. His name is Nobu and I'm sure he's going to win”. All their eyes fixed upon him as he trotted to his starting position. With the wave of a flag the race started Nobu took the lead right from the start. A black saluki was quick on his tail but Nobu remained just in the lead. They were coming into the last stretch and the swift saluki moved past Nobu. However Nobu was reserving some of his energy and with a final burst of speed he crossed the finish line first. The crowed both cheered and barked as a proud Nobu shifted back to human form. “See I told you he would win” Daryn smirked. “Well glad he did, our school is off to a good stat. I'm off to the gym, that's where they're holding the weight pull event. I wonder if Koopa has made it there yet.” Owen began to walk off as the others followed behind him “We'll all come cheer you on Owen.” Addison's voice was soft and sweet like honey.

The gym was crowded with students looking for a place to watch the next event. Daryn, Addison and Preston gathered close to the side lines as Owen made his way to the locker room where the others were getting ready. As soon as he walked in he was surrounded by great Danes, Mastiffs and many other breeds. Then he saw Koopa still standing in his human form. “I was waiting for you, hoped you hadn't come in and I had missed seeing you before you changed. Even though I'm going to win good luck man.” And with that Koopa shifted into his strong pit bull form and waited for Owen to change. He gave Koopa a cold glance as he shifted into his large malamute form and looked down at Koopa. “Not bad... so you're Nordic breed eh? Well you might be bigger than me but trust me I've beaten bigger dogs that you.” Koopa's message filled Owen's mind as he parted the crowed and went to the gym. “Oh yeah, well we'll see about that.” Owen's thoughts called out to Koopa.

Owen glared at Koopa the entire time they waited to pull. Koopa was the last dog to pull and Owen was up next. The current weight to beat is 700 pounds and Owen knew he had pulled much more than that before. He was confident and proud as he approached the cart and his green harness was connected. “Woohoo! Go Owen go!” Daryn cheered from the side lines as Addison and Preston watched quietly. The competition began as Owen easily pulled the 700 pounds of weight. A few rounds passed and he was now up to 1200 pounds. “Alright Owen you have never pulled this much before. Come on you can do this, gotta set the bar high.” Owen though to himself as he prepared to pull. The announcer called out “Go!” and Owen began to strain. This was more than he was use to pulling but he wanted to make it across the finish line. The cart moved inch by inch but time was running out. Owen gathered his strength in the nick of time and advanced to the next weight. He was getting tired but decided to keep going. Koopa eyed him but Owen couldn't tell if he was worried, nervous, or confident. Up next was 1250 pounds and Owen was ready to go. Yet again the announcer called “Go!” and Owen pulled hard but the cart didn't move. He pulled and pulled but it just wouldn't budge and with that he had reached his limit. “Highest weight pulled is now 1200 pounds by Owen of Inuoshi.” The announcement echoed through the gym.

Koopa was up next and Owen watched the sleek black dog confidently approach the cart. Owens deep red fur raised slightly on his back as he could feel anxiety overtake him. His emerald eyes were glued as the event started Koopa at 800 pounds. Koopa pulled that with ease and continued through the rounds effortlessly. He was now at 1150 pounds, just one round under Owen's best pull. Yet again without much effort at all Koopa pulled the weight across. Owen felt nervous as they added his highest weight to the cart. If he pulled this they would be tied, and then koopa would have to pull 1250 to take the event. Preston watched tensely as Addison bit her lip and Daryn clasped her hands. Koopa held his head up high as the announcer yelled “Go!” and struggled a bit at the start but once again pulled the wright. Owen clenched his jaw as they added the last of the weight. He watched as Koopa pulled at the cart which refused to move. “Yes, yes stay put don't budge.” Owen screamed inside his own mind. Koopa mustered his strength and pulled, the cart moved. He took a step forward, then another and another. “No! No, come on let the time run out.” This time Owen shouted out loud. Koopa took his final steps across the finish line, he had done it before the clock stopped, he had pulled the most weight of the day. Owen hung his head in anger and in defeat.

“Come on cheer up Owen there's still a chance. The rest of us haven't competed yet.” Daryn's voice was cheerful despite the fact that she was disappointed. “You did beat your own highest record so that's something to be proud of.” Addison added in her sweetest voice. “I know but I wanted to beat that cocky dog so bad.” Owen growled through clenched teeth. Preston gave Addison an uneasy look as he patted Owen on the shoulder “Hey there's always next year man.” Owen stayed quiet for a while, he gathered his thoughts and then perked up. “Well we can still beat them in the other events. Daryn you better head to the field you're up next and I think they just finished the dock jump events.” Daryn smiled “Well in that case I'm off, you guys go find a spot and cheer me on.” and with that a spunky golden retriever bounded away. The others exchanged glances and went to find a good spot to watch the event.

A variety of breeds had turned out for the disc event. Daryn was up first and was determined to set the bar high. Her golden blond coat shined in the sunlight as she ran around, loosening up her muscles. She had 5 rounds to get the best catch at the farthest distance. The thrower of the disc signaled the start of the event and then launched the first disc. Daryn leaped into the air catching the disc at 50 yards. Already this was fairly impressive but she didn't stop their. Each round she increased the distance and now it was her final round. Her best catch so far was 87.5 yards and she was determined to do better. Her sky blue eyes were bright with anticipation as she watched the thrower launch the disc. She bounded through the grass and into the air catching the bright orange disc at 96.8 yards. She landed with a confident bounce thinking no one could beat her distance. Owen, Preston and Addison cheered loudly as Daryn shifted back to human form and took a seat along the sidelines of the field to watch the other dogs compete.

Koopa looked at Kuma nervously “You think you can beat that?” Kuma's ice blue eyes were focused on the other competing dogs as he replied “We'll shall see … we shall see.” Tenchi and Mika exchanged unsure glances before shifting their attention back to the event. Kuma reminded calm and collected as he watched the event unfold. Round after round, dog after dog none had yet beat Daryn's top score. Finally the last dog was up; it was Kuma who took the field, his bright blue eyes stood out against the grey, black, and brown tones of his fur. He had a calm, reserved air about him as he took the field. The first disc was released and with lightning speed he flew across the filed and into the air catching the disc at 69 yards. Round after round he increased his distance and was in second place to Daryn at 92.3 yards. Daryn watched intently as Kuma prepared for the last catch. She clenched a water bottle tightly in her hands. The disc launched and Kuma ripped across the field and into the air at 97.2 yards, Daryn cursed softly under her breath as she felt the sting of defeat hit her. Then she heard the crow erupt in a loud sigh. She raised her gaze just in time to see the disc falling to the ground... Kuma had missed the catch, she had won the event.

Kuma sulked back to his group as Daryn sprinted full speed back to Owen and the others. With a glint of joy in her eye she exclaimed “Did you see that!?! I though he had me for sure but nope I'm the victor, I’m the one with the best score. You see distance doesn't mean squat if you're not accurate enough to catch the disc.” Owen smiled and Preston shook his head as he replied “Now Daryn don't gloat that's not very lady like.” Daryn just waved her hand “Now when has anything I've done been lady like.” The group broke out with laughter. Kuma on the other hand kept his gaze on the ground as he rejoined his friends. “I failed... I had that disc then it slipped through my teeth.” His words came out sharp. “You did your best, its all we can ask. Besides you would have had her if that disc wasn't so slippery. Plus there's still the agility event with both Tenchi and Mika competing. Don't worry we're going to win I'm sure of it.” Koopa's voice was deep and soothing.

The day was coming to a close with only the agility event left. Both Addison and Preston were on the field sitting quietly as the obstacles were set in place. Tenchi bounded onto the field with Mika walking slowly and calmly behind him. There was a little red and white Shetland sheepdog sitting next to a blue merle Austriallian shepherd at the opposite side of the field. Several border collies eying the rest of the competition along with a variety of other breeds. “Addi I think you're up first. Good luck out there.” Preston's message was quiet and soothing as it entered Addison's mind. “Thanks Preston I'm so nervous...When do you go?” Even Addison's thoughts were sweet and quiet. He wagged his stubby tail “I'm last. Just relax Addi you'll do fine.” With that Addison wagged her tail as she bounced toward the starting point, her silky ears swaying as she walked. The word was given and Addison was off in a flash jumping the first hurdle with ease and went up and down the seesaw with no trouble at all. She twisted through the weave polls and headed toward the last hurdle. As she jumped over her back foot caught and she knocked the poll from its place. She finished the course in 36 seconds but was penalized for the last hurdle adding 2 seconds to her time. She hung her head as she walked over to Preston “I blew it Preston, I knew I would.” Preston's tail stopped wagging “What are you talking about Addi? Even with the fault you're time is 38 seconds. That's a great time, better than a lot of dogs do.” He gave her a reassuring nudge with his nose and she lifted her head to watch the others compete.

Dog after dog went zooming through the course, zipping through obstacles. A few dogs made it through with better scores than Addison but overall she was still in the top 5. Her and Preston watched as Tenchi reached the starting point. The little cream Pekingese was bouncing with energy and ready for the command to be given. The green flag was raised and Tenchi was off in a flash. He bounded over hurdles with ease, zipped through the tunnels and swiftly twisted his way through the weave polls. Tenchi's cream fur was a blaze as he jumped over the last hurdle. With a clean run he finished the course in 29 seconds. He bounced in joy as he took the leading position in the agility event. Addison's head drooped “Even that little pip squeak beat my time.” Preston remained silent but nudged his head under her chin. Tenchi was still full of energy as he bounced over to Mika “Did you see me? Oh wait I was moving to fast you couldn't.” Mika gave him a stern look “Don't brag, no one likes a boaster.” And with that she elegantly walked to the starting line.

The signal was give and Mika was off, swiftly jumping and going over and under the obstacles with ease. Even her quick movements had an air of refinement to them. She worked her way through the weave polls and over the last hurdle to clear the finish line. Her time came it at 40 seconds. “Look Addi she didn't beat you score!” Preston gave a little bark as Addi wagged her docked tail. “Well I'm the last to go, wish me luck.” And with that Preston's short legs carried him to the starting line. Once again the signal was give and Preston's short legs moved surprisingly fast. He was bounding over the hurdles and through the tunnels so fast that you couldn't see his legs moving. The weave polls were a piece of cake and he jumped final hurdle and landed at the finish line. He was panting pretty hard as he look up to see his time. The clock had stopped at 26.8 seconds, Preston had taken the top spot in the agility event. His stubby tail wagged quickly with delight as he trotted toward Addison.

All had gathered in the gym to see the final scores of the day and see who claimed the title. Owen looked across the room to meet Koopa's gaze. They both stared intently at each other until the loud speaker called for attention. “ Everyone this years sports festival is now at an end. I am happy to announce the the results. The winner of the racing competition is Nobu of Inuoshi Academy. The winner of the weight pull even is Koopa of Koinumuyo Academy. Yuna of Inuoshi takes the dock jump event. Today's distance disc event set a new record, Daryn of Inuoshi takes the event with a distance of 96.8 yards. Also setting a new agility record Preston of Inuoshi takes the event in under 27 seconds. That means the winner of this years annual sports festival is Inuoshi Academy. Lets have a big round of applause for our champions.” As the loud speaker ended the auditorium erupted in cheering and applause. “Owen we did it! We won!” Daryn exclaimed as she wrapped her arms around Owen's strong shoulders. “True ...” He murmed “We as a school won but with the individual events we tied with Koopa's group. We each had 2 wins and 2 losses.” He looked up to see none other than Koopa and his friends moving toward them. Owen's and Koopa's eyes met for a moment before Koopa spoke. “Well all in all I guess I have to eat my words, your school kicked our tails. But you know we did come to a draw with out own competition. I kicked your tail in weight pulls that's for sure and Tenchi was faster than the little spaniel over there.” He glanced at Addison and she quickly diverted her gaze. “But you guys also kicked our tails at disc and got the over all better agility score... How about we call a truce?” Koopa stretched out his hand in friendship. Owen's emerald eyes danced from each of his friends before meeting Koopa's hand in a firm grip. “Yeah I think we can do that … until next year that is.” The entire group burst out in laughter as the day came to a close.
By: Cecctl2

The waves crashed violently onto the beach, carrying in seashells and the smell of the ocean. With her feet resting just at the waters edge and her light blonde hair pulled into a tight bun, Daryn stared blankly at the raging waves.
As the hand rested on her shoulder lightly, she fixed her sky blue eyes onto his olive colored face. Owen looked down at her, a smile claiming his lips as he leaned in close to her neck. "Your so beautiful in the sunset." He cooed to her, wrapping her arms gently around her waste. "Why don't we finish our run?"
Pulling away from him, Daryn picked up a fast paced jog and looked back at him with a challenging stare. "Race to Howling Cove?"
Her voice was smooth like honey to Owen's ears and he sprinted after her, his powerful legs easily catching him up to her. "Your on!" He breathed as he sprinted past her, kicking up sand and water.
They ran together, passing each other on and off, for two miles before Owen finally finished at the mouth of the Cove first. The wind was strong here, blowing into the cave and creating a hollowing, evil noise that only was heard here. "You know," Daryn breathed as she stopped beside him, catching her breath. "this place still gives me the scares. Ever since my brother ditched me here as a prank."
"There's nothing to be worried about, Dar, it's perfectly safe. No one ever comes down here anyways." Owen reassured her.
The sky had turned grey with clouds and a heavy drizzle began to fall, causing the pair to take cover inside the cave. Inside, it was dark and cold, smelling of mold and salt water.
Owen cleared a spot for the two of them to sit and he held onto Daryn's waist as she rested her head on his shoulder. Owen rested his head on her's and set his mind to thinking about how they had met. It had been at a school football game, he was the star quarterback and she was in the stands. When he had his concussion that game, she had been there when he regained consciousness. Why she cared for him, he never knew, but he didn't care, as long as she loved him now.
A rustling sound pulled him from his thoughts and he felt Daryn stiffen. "What was that?" She asked, her voice thick with fear. She wasn't one to be scared, except in this cove.
"I don't know." Owen answered, looking into the darkness with squinted eyes as he tried to make out whatever was back there.
Out of the darkness, two figures appeared. A tall, long haired girl dressed in all black and a shorter, more nerdy looking boy dressed in all black as well. "Hello, friends." The boy said, a snickering laugh coating his voice as he elbowed his female friend.
"We haven't had guests in forever!" The girl cheered, running her hands through Owen's red hair, causing him to shudder and causing Daryn to squirm from his lap and stand up to face the pair.
"Who are you?" She demanded, her voice shaky.
"I am Addison, and this is Preston." The female answered, smiling brightly. "Sorry if we startled you, we hardly get any guests back here. It is a boring life to lead, in the dark all of the time, but when you are one of us, you have to live like this."
"One of you?" Owen asked, joining Daryn's side.
Preston nodded and pulled his lips back, exposing two long fangs and smiling brightly. "Yes, one of us."

The End:)
By: Aziu

“Darn it!” Daryn screamed, breaking the silence. Her pen clacked against the far wall of the room and dropped into Preston’s lap. He looked up over his book, unperturbed. Daryn slammed her fists on the desktop and threw herself back in her chair with a huff. Her eyes, normally sky blue were stormy.

Rufus’ head shot up and thumped against the underside of the desk. Whining, he slunk across the room and settled at Preston’s feet. His owner reached down and patted the dog’s broad head.

“Take it easy, it’ll come to you,” Preston advised in a soothing voice. He adjusted his thick-rimmed glasses and returned to his reading. Rufus plopped his head onto his paws, sighed, and went back to sleep.

“No, it will not, Preston,” Daryn raged, “it’s over, done, kaput! This stupid book is due to the publisher in two days. Two days! And now my muse has flown the coop, is off relaxing the Caribbean or something while I’m left here pulling my hair out trying to dredge up a remotely decent ending.”

Rufus, disturbed by the yelling, got up and lumbered out of the room. Daryn watched him go, glaring after him as if everything were his fault.

“That’s what you say every time, hun, and yet you’ve finished your books in time before.”

Daryn swivelled her chair back and forth, toying with her wedding band. The play of the light off the stone was mesmerizing, relaxing. Exhaling, she ran a hand through her blonde hair. “I know, I know, I’m sorry.”

“No need to be. The writing profession is stressful, I get it.” His green eyes were warm, reassuring, as he met her gaze. Abruptly he set his book aside and crossed the room. Leaning over her shoulder he read the last few lines of text, mouthing the words as he processed them.

She tensed, ever-defensive of her writing but permitted his intrusion. “Please tell me you have an idea,” she said after he had finished.

“Erm,” he murmured, drawing back. Crossing his arms and tapping his foot, he thought for a long while. Daryn watched him intently. Finally, he leaned forward and opened his mouth to speak.

“Wait!” Daryn exclaimed, spinning frantically around and planting her feet with a thud to stop the chair. She fumbled around on the desk in search of a new writing utensil. Finding it, she began scribbling frantically on the stack of paper, her tongue protruding from the corner of her mouth as she fell into deep concentration.

Preston shifted. Daryn grunted, indicating that he was not to move. Obediently he stayed in place. The phone rang in the other room but went unanswered. A moment later a voice came over the speaker.

“Pres, it’s Owen. Still haven’t heard back from you about the game. It’s on Saturday. That’s two days, if it has escaped your notice. I know it hasn’t.”

“Go ahead and get it,” Daryn growled as her hand continued to move across the page. Preston began walking toward the phone.

“Look, I know Daryn is a complete nutcase when-”

Preston broke into a sprint and snatched up the phone. “Owen? Owen, it’s me. Yea I know the game’s Saturday but uh-” He paused, listening. “Well I can’t help that Daryn’s publisher set the due date the same as the game.” He felt the weight of Daryn’s gaze through the wall. “Well obviously the book is more important!” Another pause. “No, no, don’t you do that—don’t—Owen? Hello? Gah!” He slammed the phone in the cradle.

Putting on a forced smile, he crossed back into the den. As he had expected, Daryn was watching for him. She stared curiously at him, flicking the pen between her fingers. “Who was that?” she asked innocently, though the conversation had been perfectly audible.

“Owen. He, uh, wanted to see if we were going to join him at the game on Saturday. I explained to him that you—we—had a previous engagement that could not be broken.”

Daryn smiled wryly and leaned back in her chair. “Sports are boring if you’re just watching them. But who knows? If I get this book done we might be able to make the game.” She flipped her hair back nonchalantly and awaited his answer.

“Of course dear.” Preston settled back on the sofa and took up his book.

“What else did Owen say?”

“Oh, nothing of any consequence. Go back to writing Daryn.” He raised the book, shielding his face from her penetrating gaze. She gave up eventually, as the scratch of pen on paper indicated.

Minutes ticked by in silence. Rufus graced his owners by returning to the den and sprawling his considerable bulk at Preston’s feet. Preston became deeply absorbed in the science fiction novel he was reading. Daryn had found her muse, lurking in a dark yet tropical corner of her mind, and was turning out pages with blazing speed.

The perfection of those brief moments was not to last.

Rufus shot straight up in the air, barking at the top of his lungs. He thundered out of the room and down the hall, baying the whole way. In his haste he knocked a vase off its perch and it shattered on the hall floor.

Daryn’s pen scratched a deep line across the paper. She looked up slowly, deliberately, but Preston was already gone, following the dog down the hall. The abandoned book lay face-down on the couch cushion.

Ding dong!

Daryn gritted her teeth. If it was another one of those travelling merchants…

She heard the front door open. “Owen, Addison…how good to see you.”Daryn could hear the false sincerity in Preston’s voice. She echoed his sentiments. She had been so close to finishing!

Struggling to refocus her attention on the story, she found her mind blank. Grumbling, she threw her pen down on the desk.

Rufus had returned and placed his huge head on her knee. Drool trickled from the sides of his mouth onto her pant leg. Her eyes flicked down to look at him. He returned her stare with big, chocolate-brown eyes. She quirked her mouth, annoyed—not at the dog, but at the entire situation in which she found herself. The whisperings in the hall did not help matters.

“Preston, your dog wants to go out!” she called in a voice far louder than was necessary.

“Oh. I guess so. Rufus, come boy!”

With a low woof the large dog spun round and trotted out of the room. Daryn took up her pen once more and, taking a deep breath, struggled to return to the task at hand.

When Preston and Rufus returned, followed by an athletically-built redhead and a comparatively petite brunette, they found Daryn methodically tearing a sheet of paper into tiny pieces. “Junk, junk, it’s just all junk!” she chanted as she shredded the offending document.

“Oy,” Preston moaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. He intervened, saving the rest of the papers from the fate of their unfortunate comrade. “Daryn, you know that doesn’t help anything.”

“Helps me!” she growled in return.

Addison pushed a lock of sandy brown hair behind her ear and stepped forward, taking Daryn’s hand. “Come on Daryn, you just need to get out of this room for a while. Why don’t we take Rufus for a walk?”

Rufus scuttled out of the room, tail wagging. Shortly thereafter, glass shattered somewhere in the house.

“Ugh, no. For one thing Preston just had him out. I’ve just got to finish this and then maybe we can make it to that game. Maybe. Don’t count on it.”

Rufus trotted up to Addison and shoved his nose into her hand. He held his leash clenched in his jaws. She laughed and patted his head as she extracted the drool-soaked lead.

“Addison’s right Daryn, you just need to get out for a bit. Hey, we’ve got four people, why don’t we go down to the park and play a round of volleyball?” Preston suggested.

The dog bounded out of the room again.

“No, that won’t help anything,” Daryn whined.

“How about taking a break to eat something? When did you eat last?”

“I dunno, not that long ago-”

“Dinner last night,” Preston supplied.

“Well that’s your problem, then! Come on, let’s go out and get a bite to eat. My treat.” Addison managed to pry Daryn out of her chair, though it was a hard-fought victory.

Rufus’s tail thumped against Daryn’s knees. He held a deflated volleyball in his mouth and was gazing longingly across the room at Preston. Addison laughed and ruffled the dog’s coat. Rufus turned to her and butted the volleyball against her knee.

After an uncharacteristic period of silence, the redhead spoke up. “Pres, seriously, the amount of English this dog understands is disturbing. You sure he’s not an alien?”

“Oh pssh Owen, don’t be ridiculous. He’s just a smart boy—aren’t you?” Addison took the dog’s head in her hands and moved his loose skin about as she talked to him. Rufus hopped with a muted bark and rubbed the slimy volleyball across her face. She reared back, sputtering and wiping at her face. Rufus muscled his way through her legs and waddled over to Preston, tail waving wildly.

Owen’s stentorian laughter echoed in the confines of the house. “He’s smart, all right!”

Even Daryn couldn’t help but chuckle at the dog’s antics. “Oh, all right you guys, let’s pack some sandwiches and head to the park. I think we have a more serviceable volleyball in the garage.”

Sandwiches and drinks were packed. Daryn found the good volleyball nestled on a high shelf in the garage; Owen, being the tallest, had to fetch it down. Rufus and his leash piled into the back of Preston’s SUV while the humans and their lunch claimed the cab. The drive to the park was brief and filled with eager chatter amongst most of the vehicle’s occupants, including the dog. Daryn alone was the exception, as she sat scribbling away in a notebook.

When they arrived, Addison and Owen climbed out of the backseat, dragging the picnic lunch with them. They extracted Rufus from the back end of the car and the trio gambolled into the park to seek out a shady place to eat.

Preston nudged Daryn’s elbow to get her attention. She looked up, bewildered. “We’re here,” Preston explained with a smile.

“Oh.” Daryn unclipped her seatbelt. Preston took the opportunity to sneak a peek at her progress with the story. The page was covered with doodles.

As she moved to get out of the car, he caught her wrist and pulled her back. “Leave the notebook here,” he instructed gently. She glanced at the page and tilted it to hide it from his view, embarrassed. Reluctantly she left it on the seat.

The couple joined their friends beneath the shade of a large oak tree. Sandwiches were dispensed and the crisp pop and hiss of cans of soda being opened echoed across the field. Rufus made his rounds, begging from each person in turn. Addison was the only one who took pity on him and shared a bite of her ham and cheese sandwich. Content, the large canine snuggled up against her and looked accusingly across at his master.

“Turncoat,” Preston chided.

Owen tossed the remnants of his meal into the picnic basket and stretched. “Well, who’s ready to play?” He stood and snatched up the volleyball. Rufus jumped to his feet and almost knocked Addison over in his rush to get the ball. “No boy!” Owen exclaimed, kneeing the huge dog to keep him from his prize.

Daryn rose and offered her husband a hand up. Addison trailed after them. Owen and Rufus were already on the sandy court, waiting impatiently.

“Sorry Ruf, but you gotta stay off the court,” Preston explained as he took the dog by the collar and dragged him into the grass. The animal’s protest was seen in the large drag mark left in the sand.

Once the dog was settled the humans took their places. Owen served first. The game started off slowly but soon escalated as Owen and Daryn became more competitive. Preston and Addison stepped out before long; the athletic types were dominating their respective sides of the court. The ball finally came down on Daryn’s side, smack on the line. Daryn and Owen got into a heated shouting match over whether it was a valid point. Preston and Addison wisely kept out of the argument.

It was Rufus who finally broke it up. He rushed onto the field, seized the volleyball, and took off running. In turn, the humans sprinted after him. The dog galloped giddily around the field, leading his people a merry romp. Daryn and Owen took the offensive, diving at the dog in an attempt to reclaim the ball. Rufus foiled them at every turn.

When finally the dog relinquished his prize, the volleyball was deflated. He brought it over to Daryn, who was seated in the grass panting after her exertions, and dropped it unceremoniously in her lap. Growling through her teeth, she snatched up the ball and raised it threateningly over her head. Rufus ran away.

Laughing, Preston took the would-be weapon from his spouse and helped her to stand. “I think that was Rufus’ way of telling you two to lighten up,” he remarked around chuckles.

“Well, whatever, we can’t play anymore. Daryn, go home and finish your little project so we can make it to the game on Saturday!” Owen ordered.

“Owen, I don’t think it quite works that way,” Addison remarked.

“Owen, bring up that stupid game one more time and I’ll-”

“What?”

“I don’t know, but you won’t like it!” Daryn assured with a mocking smile.

“No need to let Rufus end the party so soon. Let’s head back and we can just chill, watch some TV, whatever. That’ll give Daryn some time to…where is she?” Preston looked about in confusion. Daryn was nowhere to be seen.

“Eh she probably just ran to the bathroom or something. Let’s load up the car. She’ll turn up.” Owen suited the action to the words and hefted the picnic basket. They walked back to the car with Rufus in the lead, tugging on his leash the entire way.

When they arrived at the car they found the missing member of their team sitting in the passenger’s seat and scribbling madly in her notebook. Without speaking the rest of them piled into the car. The ride was uncharacteristically silent, the only sound being that of Daryn’s pen scratching across the paper. Even Rufus was quiet.

Once home Daryn clambered out of the car without a word, marched straight into the den and closed the door. Preston led the others into the sitting room and turned on the television. They settled on the sofa and watched Olympic swimming whilst snacking on chips and popcorn. Rufus settled in his favourite corner and chewed on the newly-destroyed volleyball.

After several hours Addison announced her intention of leaving, as the dinner hour had arrived. She said her goodbyes, leaving the men alone. They relaxed for a time but before long Owen’s hunger got the best of him and he left as well. Preston switched off the television and settled back on the couch with a sigh. Rufus was snoring quietly in the corner. He had managed to rip the volleyball in half.

Unable to take the silence any longer, Preston slunk down the hall and opened the den door a crack. Daryn sat at her desk, bent over a sheet of paper. Preston dared to venture in. “Hey hun it’s late, are you ready for some dinner?”

Daryn sat back and threw her pen down on the desk. It bounced onto the floor. Preston flinched, expecting an outburst from her.

“What?” he asked sheepishly.

She held up the completed manuscript triumphantly. “Call Owen and tell him we’re on for Saturday. La fine!”
By: iRawrSkittles

Tobbles

She had seemed completely innocent standing by the Himo tree checking the ripeness of the fruit, just as Preston himself had been doing. Her smile held the innocence of a child, the scent coming from her had been alluring, and even though she was a completely new species to him she had looked like an angel from where he was standing. Her blonde hair seemed to glisten in the sunlight and her bright blue eyes seemed to glow as if they could see into his soul. He took a step towards her, completely absorbed by her; she was his every thought and every beat of his heart. Suddenly, the moonlight glinted behind her and he noticed that she was holding the pokiqi, a dagger of sorts, behind her back.

He barely had time to react before she lashed out at him. He moved back just in time, only allowing the tip of the pokiqi to penetrate his skin, leaving a fine scar down his chest. He looked down at the mark it had made across his chest and when he looked up again, she was gone. He looked around at the forest but the denseness made it impossible for him to see anything other than the clearing he was standing in. He lowered himself to four legs, his ears perked up and he waited patiently listening for any indication she was attacking again. He heard nothing.

He kept himself on four legs, remaining as still as he could possibly be. The flapping of wings overhead made him look up and stare intently at the sky. Did she have wings? He couldn’t remember her having them but right now, he didn’t want to take that chance. He sighed inwardly as he realized the sound was coming from his Nub. The winged creature landed with a thud and stood in front of Preston.

Preston stood on his hind legs and walked over to Nub. Everyone always commented on how large Preston was for a Tobble, standing nearly 8 feet tall, where most males in his village were barely able to reach 7’4”. However, compared to Nub, Preston was quite small. Preston patted Nub’s side and clicked his tongue, his signal for Nub to lift him onto his back. Nub did as instructed, using his trunk to lift Preston onto his furry back. Preston stared around them cautiously, looking for any sign of the female who had tried to attack him earlier.

When he realized they were alone, except for the sound of the forests natural creatures, Preston signaled Nub to head back to the village. Nub leapt off the ground so gracefully, he seemed to defy all logics of nature with his big stature.
Preston felt proud every time he rode Nub, for he was the only Tobble to ever securely train a Nub before. Every other Tobble was only able to train the normal creatures: the Nefudo, Jaquiri, and Oppolut. In the distance, he could see his village, the hunters landing with their catches of the forests delectable creatures. He dreamt of the day he could fly with them, becoming one of the hunters was the dream of every young Tobble.

He landed Nub as quietly as he could which included a loud thud! and the shaking of any tree within a two mile radius. He slid off the back of Nub and walked over to where the hunters were giving the females their catch of the night for them to ready for the feast tomorrow.

Chief Qaxi, Preston’s father, was overlooking the creatures the hunters brought back when he suddenly spotted Preston. His face lit up and he motioned for Preston to come closer. Preston turned to Nub and patted his trunk before turning to walk to his father.

“Stay here,” he called over his shoulder to Nub.

“Here he is, the newest soon-to-be hunter,” Qaxi exclaimed as he brought Preston into a hug.

“Think you can handle the creatures of the night?” Katova, the leader of the hunters asked with a wicked smirk on his face.

“No problem,” Preston puffed his chest out, staring down at Katova’s silky figure. His bluish-green skin seemed to radiate in the moonlight making him look almost translucent against the darkness around them.

“Seems to me little Preston has already began hunting,” Jedupo, a member of the hunters, said motioning towards Preston’s scratch across his chest.

“How did this happen?!” Qaxi demanded, pulling Preston in front of him to stare at the scratch.

“Someone attacked me in the forest,” Preston tried to steady his shaking voice. The thoughts of that female began to swim in his mind, making it hard to concentrate.

“Who?” Qaxi demanded.

“I don’t know who she was but…” Preston began.

“She?! A female attacked you? What did she use, a cooking device?” Katova laughed loudly, drawing attention to them from the other Tobbles.

“Yes, a female attacked me. I’ve never seen her before and she wasn’t using a cooking device, she was holding a pokiqi. She lunged at me but I moved and the tip of it scraped my chest,” Preston stared down at Katova, a challenging tone in his voice.

“What did she look like?” Qaxi, suddenly eyes wide with curiosity, asked as he sat down in his throne.

“She was shorter than I am, but taller than our females. She moved quickly on two legs, not four like we do when hunting. Something about her looked innocent until the moonlight showed the pokiqi,” Preston shuddered as he remembered the encounter.

“Sir, Preston is obviously is making this up. We are the only creatures able to walk on two legs on this island. We’ve searched this entire island and know every creature but there is no record to indicate there is any such enchanting, two legged warrior females on this island,” Katova moved closer to Qaxi with each word he said. He was talking faster now, part out of excitement of proving the Chief’s son wrong, and the other part fear of proving the Chief’s son wrong.

“Father, I wouldn’t make this up,” Preston’s eyes searched over his father’s face for any indication that he believed his son. The only thing there was disbelief.

“Son, I admit your imagination generally isn’t capable of being this strong. However, I have even searched this entire island and there are absolutely no creatures here that you describe. If you fell down, do not be ashamed to admit it to us,” Qaxi narrowed his eyes at his son, his voice booming out amongst the village.

“Yes, Father,” Preston lowered his head and began to walk to his hut. Behind him, he heard Katova snickering and whispering nonsense that needn’t be spoken.

At his hut, Preston whistled low, calling Nub over. Tonight, he would allow Nub to guard his hut. He shut his door and stalked over to his bed. There was nothing he could say to bring his father to his side except to bring that female in.
Where could he look? Although he hated to admit it, Katova was right. They had been all over this island and there is not a creature around that looked anything like what Preston had seen. He closed his eyes to try to sleep the daylight away, but every time he closed his eyes, the image of her clouded his thoughts. This was going to be a sleepless day.

Resgrams

She knew she had seen another creature, just like her Resgram tribe. She cursed herself for lashing out at him, but she didn’t know if he was dangerous or not. He moved towards her as if caught in a trance, until he saw the pokiqi. That’s when she had to lash out or wait or see what he did. Being a Resgram meant she had no patience.

She stared at the ceiling of her cave. She had to find him again, she just had to. Yet, she knew that he only came out at night. She’s been searching for this particular creature for some time, always finding trails he leaves but never a sign of him until last night. She would return to the spot she saw him and wait to see if he returned.

She teleported out of the cave, the only way to enter any Resgram cave was teleportation. After her encounter with that shiny creature, she teleported to a tree and watched him until she couldn’t see him anymore. She watched as he lowered himself on all fours, his ears rose as he listened for her to move. She didn’t, she just watched.

She heard the flapping of wings overheard and saw a large creature land next to him. The creature was furry, like many other creatures of the forest, but it was the weirdest creature she’d ever seen. It had a long trunk extending from a very oddly shaped head, the entire body of it was covered in hair, and the tail extended into a ball of spikes. The most magnificent thing about the creature, the one thing that captivated her, was the wings. They were silver, almost pure white and seemed to glow in the moonlight.

The winged beast lifted the creature onto its’ back and flew off into the night. It actually flew! She was amazed and continued to stare after the best until she could no longer see either one of the creatures she was spying on.

It was then she teleported back to her tribe. She found everyone sleeping, which is accustomed to the tribe that late at night. They were more of a daylight group. She had teleported into her cave and tried to sleep but it seemed nearly impossible.

I have to see him again, the thought crossed her mind once again as she strode to the bathing pool. Everyone else had already bathed and had started working on their daily chores. She had woken up late, after finally falling asleep way into the early morning hours. She took her time bathing, usually she was rushed because the bathing pool was so full of every other member of the tribe she didn’t have room to move, let alone take her time.

She finally emerged from the water, after she was completely soaked and shook herself dry. She walked to weapons cave and teleported inside, finding the rest of the warriors already working on new weapon technology.

“Look who finally decided to join us,” Addison, her best friend exclaimed running over to her.

“I just couldn’t get much sleep last night,” Daryn replied hugging her.

“Long night?” Owen, the greatest warrior, asked winking as he began to shine the weapon he was working on.

“Actually, yes,” Daryn stepped forward to her machine and began to look at the plans for her newest weapon: a traguv. She smiled as she began to assemble the weapon, melting the rock down to be able to syphon out the iron within each rock.

As Owen walked away, Addison walked over and sat next to Daryn on the ice stone. She stared and Daryn could feel herself squirming under her eyes. Addison had been her best friend since she was younger. They played together all of the time, leading to Addison being her best friend now. Daryn could feel Addison’s sharp green eyes stare at her. She couldn’t keep a secret from Addison but she didn’t want the rest of the tribe to find out about the other creatures. Owen would surely lead a hunt against them to kill them off; she had to protect the boy.

“Where were you last night?” Addison’s angelic voice seemed to glide through the air.

“I just uh…got caught up in tracking this beast,” Daryn smiled as her blonde hair fell slowly across her shoulder to hide the slight smile on her face. It wasn’t a complete lie, she was tracking a beast of sorts.

“Uh huh,” Addison smiled and whipped her sandy, brown hair behind her shoulder onto her back and Daryn knew she didn’t believe her.

“Look…Addie, I’ll tell you all about it, just not in here…” Daryn let her eyes wander over to Owen who was now staring at the girls intently.

“Alright, fine, but you have to tell me,” Addison stood up and sauntered over to her work table and began working on perfecting her newest weaponry.

Daryn went back to working on her traguv, completely caught up in perfecting this weapon. The hours began to pass without another interruption and the only thing that remained on her mind was the male from last night. She was amazed at how easily he moved, how stealthy each movement was made and how she couldn’t even hear him breathing. She wanted so bad to touch him, feel his skin against her palm.

“Daryn, it’s time for dinner,” Owen placed his large hand over her shoulder, jolting her to reality.

“Oh, I completely forgot. I’ve been completely engrossed in finishing this traguv,” she replied as she stood and glanced around the cave. It was completely empty except for her and Owen, a very rare coincidence. She had to get out of the cave alone with him before he tried to win her over, as he had with every other single female of the tribe. It worked most of the time; Owen wasn’t bad-for a Resgram. His hair was as red as blood and it hung just above his bright, green eyes. He was leader of the hunters, which gave him a slight edge and he knew how to take control of any situation.

“The traguv is a very interesting weapon, my dear,” Owen smiled at her as he picked up her plans for the traguv.

“Thank you, Owen, but I’m awfully hungry. I worked straight through lunch and I haven’t eaten a thing all day,” Daryn said, moving further away from Owen.

“Ah yes, we should get going before they wonder about us,” he replied before winking and teleporting to the dining cave. Daryn let out a sigh of relief as she teleported as well.

Everyone was already digging into their food when Daryn sat down at her place at the long table and began to eat. She chewed her food absently as she continued to think of the male she had seen and the rendezvous they would have tonight. She hoped he would go back to that same patch in the clearing of the forest, if only she would’ve talked to him instead of trying to kill him.

She heard everyone talking around her, mostly talking about things that proved to be no concern of her at this instant. After dinner was over, she snuck off outside only to see that sun was now behind the distant horizon. Her mood immediately lightened as she snuck behind the gathering of rocks that surrounded her tribe. She quickly glanced around before teleporting to the rocks where she would, or so she hoped she would, meet him.

Tobbles

Preston opened his eyes, surprised at his willingness to sleep after such an eventful night yesterday. He jumped out of his bed and ran outside but suddenly smacked up against something soft and squishy. The female, was his first thought until he felt the snugness of Nub’s trunk wrapping around his waist.

“Hey there, buddy,” he replied running his hand over the large creature’s trunk. He walked past Nub and saw everyone rushing around frantically. He glanced into the sky and let out a slow groan as he suddenly remembered what tonight was.

Tonight was the night he would be dubbed a hunter. On the first Night of Absolute Darkness of the new century, the only night where the stars didn’t dare shine and the moon hid behind the clouds for fear of being seen, this was the night he was born. Exactly one century ago, he now held the stance of a grown Tobble, no longer a small child.

He began to walk towards the hut of his father and as he walked, other Tobbles stopped to congratulate him. He smiled and thanked each one of them, all the while the only thought on his mind was the female he had met. He knew he had to get out here to go meet her, he had to talk to her and see her again, if only to make sure she wasn’t a dream.

“There he is! The man of the night,” Qaxi exclaimed, grabbing his son into a very loose hug.

“Hello, Father,” Preston tried his best to act excited. Tonight is my night, why shouldn’t I be excited? his thoughts sprung from his mind almost before he could stop them. He didn’t dare answer the question, he knew what the answer would be all too well.

His father grabbed his arm and pulled him outside, out onto the platform where he would be crowned hunter if he passed. If he failed, the consequences are worse than death; he would be shunned from the Tobbles and never allowed to return. He shuddered at the thought of never seeing these people again.

“Tonight, Preston will go on his first hunting mission…alone. He will have to bring back a creature for us to put at the center of the feast,” Qaxi’s voice rang amongst the village as everyone began to cheer and applaud. He turned to Preston and nodded, giving his sign of approval as Preston took his pokiqi from his pocket and jumped off the platform. Everyone cleared his path as he walked into the dense forest by himself.

Once into the forest, he whistled and Nub immediately was at his side. He was lifted onto the back of the beast and began to direct Nub to the spot he had seen the female last night. He landed Nub as silently as possible and slid off of him. His heart began to race at the thought of seeing her in the clearing, his head began to cloud and he could feel his palms beginning to get sweaty.

“You can go, boy,” he patted Nub’s side and the creature took off into the night. He stood completely motionless, hoping she would show herself. He lowered himself to the ground and waited as patiently as he possibly could.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a blue illuminating light. He turned immediately at the sight and saw the female. She had come. He stood then, immediately towering over her, hoping to pose as more of a threat so she wouldn’t be as eager to lash out at him as she had been the previous night.

“Hello,” her voice floated across the wind, it was as smooth as silk yet held the roughness of leather.

“Hi,” he hoped his voice seemed manly to her, it came out as a squeak to him.

“I’m Daryn, warrior of the Resgrams,” she smiled as she extended her hand to him.

“I’m Preston, Prince of the Tobbles,” he grasped her hand; it was warm and surprisingly soft for a warrior.

“A prince, you say? What exactly is a Tobble?” she asked, clearly interested in learning more about him. She walked over and sat on a rock jutting out from the ground. Her movements were swift and graceful. As she lowered herself onto the rock and turned to stare at Preston, he could feel her eyes boring into him again. Those blue eyes that seemed to haunt his dreams last night were now right in front of him.

“I’m a Tobble, there is a whole tribe of people like me at the village. We are creatures of the night; the sun badly hurts us and can kill us if we are exposed to the Early Morning sun. What of yourself? A female warrior? That’s preposterous! What is a Resgram?” Preston lowered his stance to seem friendly to this new creature he found.

“I’m a Resgram, just as you are a Tobble. Resgrams prefer daylight to nighttime, most of the time we are not nocturnal. Any one of my tribe can be a warrior, does not matter if you are male or female, you must pass a series of tests in order to become one,” her gaze remained focus on Preston’s eyes.

Preston sank down a little more so he was eye level with Daryn. He placed his hand over hers and felt the contrast between their skins. His hands were rough and calloused from excessive working and building within the village, while even though she claimed to be a female, her hands were as silky as anything he had ever felt before. Daryn kept her smile on her face as the moment between them seemed to start growing more intense, more defying than the feeling of hunting. He could feel himself falling into her, she was captivating beyond belief. His heart began to race again, just as it had earlier.

Suddenly, Preston stood on his hind legs, breaking the spell between them. He had heard the cry of a Jaquiri, soft enough so only Tobbles can hear them. He knew there were no untamed Jaquiris, all of the Jaquiris belonged to his tribe. He went to tell Daryn to run, the rest of his tribe was coming for her. He didn’t have enough time to react before an energy bubble was placed over Daryn, her blue eyes shone with wonder and fear. Hunters from the Tobbles began screaming at Daryn as they ran up and began to wickedly push the bubble every which way, taunting Daryn.

“Nice job,” Katova shouted over the chaos. With that, he turned and began to lead the group back to the village with Daryn as their captive. She was screaming, Preston could see that through the denseness of the bubble. She was terrified and it was all Preston’s fault. He couldn’t let his tribe hurt her.

Preston whistled for Nub, who immediately came to his side and lifted him up. “We have to save her,” he whispered into the neck of Nub as they flew to the village.

When the neared the village, Preston pulled Nub back until they could see the village but couldn’t be seen. They saw Katova moving Daryn to the center of the feast, along with the approving look from his father and the rest of the village.

“Sir, since Preston did not bring this savage in by himself, he must not be able to be a hunter,” Katova’s voice drifted on the wind to Preston. So that was it, Katova followed him so he wouldn’t be able to bring anything back to become a hunter.

Preston felt the fire inside of himself like he’d never felt before. He leaned forward on Nub, allowing for Nub to move faster towards Daryn’s bubble. Preston glared at Katova as they flew past and lifted Daryn into the sky with them. Preston flew Nub to a spot on a cliff he knew that no one in his village knew about except him.

“I’m so sorry,” he said staring at Daryn inside the bubble. He stood back and burst a light beam from his hands, exploding the bubble and leaving the shivering Daryn standing where the bubble once was.

“You saved me,” she replied and hugged Preston. Preston smiled and returned the gesture.

“I put you in danger, I had to,” he replied as he stood back from her.

Daryn stared up into his eyes as they neared closer together. Suddenly, Preston felt a pain he had never felt before on his back. He immediately fell to the ground to try to escape the pain.

“What is it?” Daryn replied as she bent down. She felt the sun beating down on her back and knew immediately what was wrong: the sun had touched him. She stood and tried to shield him from the intense hit, but knew it was too late.

“It hurts…so bad,” Preston’s words came out rough and hard, as if even speaking was taking away his life.

Daryn stared down at Preston and placed her lips upon his, trying to breathe life back into this creature. She breathed as much life as she could into him, but it didn’t help.

Preston’s breathing became shallow; he stared up at Daryn as he felt himself slipping away. “Never forget me,” he whispered as he closed his eyes with the image of Daryn burnt into his mind forever.
I've not read through all the stories yet but from just grazing through them they are all really good! Congrats to Az and Cecctl on getting 1st and 2nd and thanks to Zag for hosting the contest. It was interesting working with premade characters!
