Dog Food

edited July 2012 in General Discussion
So my little Sheltie has decided that she no longer likes the food that I've been feeding my dogs for ever (Natural Balance Ultra Premium Formula mixed with Science Diet Oral Health formula). Anyone have any suggestions for a similar quality or better quality dry dog food? My dog is a spayed female, approx 16lbs, 4 years old and very active. Any suggestions, pros or cons would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer a brand with bigger pieces or a mix of big and small, my dog has bad teeth due to her genetics and brushing daily just doesn't cut it for her.

 • I buy Kirkland brand Adult dog healthy weight lamb and something. Just get it at costco It is cheapish and Its a bang for your buck. It looks like <a href="http://content2.costco.com/~/media/Images/BC Images/Pet-Food/KS_HealthyDog.ashx?w=254&h=388&as=1 " target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://content2.costco.com/~/media/Images/BC Images/Pet-Food/KS_HealthyDog.ashx?w=254&h=388&as=1 </a> But my dog is over weight. xD I dont think your dog lose weight cause we have been feeding that to him since he was a year old. It dosnt help ith weight but if your dog doesnt have strong teeth then Beniful Would be good cause my aunt's dog is deaf and 15 years old and she eats it. The soft kind. You have to put it in the frige and they come in small packs so you can try it before you buy a big one. :) And Also, <a href="http://petdepotmd.com/images/taste_of_the_wild.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://petdepotmd.com/images/taste_of_the_wild.jpg; is good too. We got a free pack from Mike's Pet and feed and my dog eats it like theres no tomarrow. xD So, try any of them. :) Hope your dog will be fine with any of those choices. : P

 • I feed my four working Border Collies <a href="http://www.canidae.com/"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Canidae. It's pretty good cost wise and all my dogs seem to enjoy it. Another good one is <a href="http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/index.aspx"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Wellness, I used to feed my dogs that but it's price skyrocketed.

<a href="http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">This website is very good for picking out food based on the quality.

 • Just remember, in almost every case, you get what you pay for when it comes to dog food. We feed our dog Blue Buffalo Wilderness, it's one of the better foods and also one of the few that hasn't been recalled yet.

 • I feed <a href="http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/products/dog-food/"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Honest Kitchen Dehydrated to my boy. Our neighbors also feed it to their corgis, one of which is an older guy and just had to have some teeth pulled so he has some difficulty eating. Since the dehydrated, once mixed with water, plumps up to a nice pasty consistency without a lot of hard bits to chew through, it seems to work well for dogs with dental problems/sensitive teeth, etc. We also mix in kibble (<a href="http://www.naturesvariety.com/Prairie/dog/kibble/all"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Nature's Variety Prairie) for some additional texture/variety. My boy can't get enough of this combination and he is usually a finnicky eater (we've been through dry kibble, canned food and raw with him before finally finding this.) There is the initial sticker-shock on the price of the dehydrated, but it seems to last just as long as a bag of dog food (we're feeding a 25lb dog, so you'd probably get more use with your 16lb dog.) There is more prep time for the dehydrated over dry kibble, but it's really not a big deal imo.
 • Hmm anyone know much about the Halo brand?

 • I recommend Innova's Evo line, above all else. Orijen is a good brand, but it's quite pricey. I've tried dozens of dog foods as my dog has severe skin issues. She's actually doing horrible right now (has lost almost all her fur again) and she's on Nature's Variety Instinct. Evo was the only thing that helped her go from dry, cracked skin (with a rotting smell) to soft, plushy fur.

I've only used Halo wet food for dogs, but I've used Halo dry food for the cats. It's a really good brand with lots of options. You can get grain-free kibble or kibble with grains. Real fish, chicken, beef, turkey, or lamb is always the #1 ingredient, with the exception of the vegan one. In the wet food I bought, you could see real pieces of chicken liver. It was disgusting, lol, but it was comforting to know that it was legitimate advertising. They say they use real meat sources and they mean it.

Halo's food smells good too. I don't know if it's just me, but the smell of the food is always something I like to check. Some foods smell like trash, while others smell like something you'd actually try. My dogs loved gobbling down the wet food and they loved stealing the cats food.

I would recommend at least giving Halo a try. It's one of the best brands you can get for the price it's offered at.
