• I've never heard of iart pro, but Pixelmator is a good application. It does cost money, but they provide a 30 day free trial. After that it's only $15 (it's on sale) and that is a really good deal. It's comparably to Photoshop in terms of quality and tools.

According to one review for iart pro, the program doesn't provide much more than what Preview already comes with. From the screencaps of it, it just appears to have a nice user-interface without much else. I personally wouldn't waste the money.

One of the featured small art programs in the app store is "Skitch". It looks nice and the reviews are pretty good. The app is free as well, so it might be worth a try.

SketchBook Express is a free, cropped version of Sketchbook Pro. It's a very good app but there are tons of tools to play around with. The free version limits you to 6 layers and it saves the files as flat images, so I don't believe editing at a later date is possible. The paid, full version is $59.99. There is also another free version of SketchBook, one where you color with 'markers'. It actually looks pretty neat, but I've never tried it personally. It's called SketchBook Copic Edition.

Of course, most of these apps require an up to date Mac OS, so it depends upon what version you've got.

    On an indefinite hiatus.
  • I just got an app called PicMix (I think, don't hold me to that). It does cost 99 cents, but there is also a light version. Playing around with it, things are rather vague. You can't add text or anything, just do the cutting and positioning of photos. It is rather frustrating at times if you're a perfectionist. You definitely need to have some idea on how to do graphics as well, observing a friend in GIMP was enough for me.
