What else can we do?

edited June 2012 in Vent
Well, I've vented about my neighbors complaining about my dog barking. There hasn't really been any real complaints in about 5 years because we've pretty much taken care of the problem. Molly comes inside the house when we leave (we used to leave her outdoors when we left) and that's all we can really do.

I left home for two hours while my parents were gone and happened to forget to put Molly indoors. Well, apparently she barked consistently while we were away. The one time I forget. We got a call from the RCMP about the complaints from our neighbors stating that "the dog was barking consistently for hours on end and the owners had been away all weekend." Okay, just because it's a long weekend and many people go camping doesn't mean that we're gone. Plus we take our dogs with us wherever we go for long periods of time. AND, it was Friday night. The first day of the weekend. How in the world can you tell if we're going to be away all weekend? I don't like lies.

But that's not my real vent. My real vent is that now they're complaining about my Chihuahua barking in my bedroom. How can I control that? He only barks when people are near our house. My dog is already contained in my house and you're still going to complain about hearing him barking? Isn't that a little ridiculous? Do I just have to be home all the time and supervise them? Someone is always home. Very rarely does my whole family decide to leave the house for the night and leave the dogs home.

I really don't like my neighbors. They complain about everything. When me and my sister were young, in the middle of a summer's day, my next door neighbor told us to be quiet. We were in our own yard, having fun and not making much noise at all. I'm just tired of it all. ):

  • Your neigbours sound annoying... i get annoyed at my neighbours dogs but they bark all the time... even when people are in the house... but i've never even bothered to tell them that its annoying, nevermind ringing the animal services. And we had a dog that used to howl a lot and they told us once, and we tried to shut it up but they didnt ring services either... that just sounds silly and i would totally get annoyed at them

  • Yeah, my neighbors have taken any chance to complain. For the most part, it's only our next door neighbors. The irony? My dad said when he was young (we live in the same house and neighborhood he grew up in), the same neighbors had a yappy little dog that barked all the time.

  • Annoying neighbours are definitely going to be annoying. -Troll Face-

My neighbour now has a little Malti-Weiner (-__-) that barks -constantly- when inside. But I pay no attention, because these neighbours mind their own business and I should too, it's only noticeable if you really -try- to listen anyway. My other neighbour just across the street has six BIG dogs with BIG barks. But even with them it's nothing to make phone calls about. I highly doubt your neighbour is actually being bothered, dey jus dunt lik u. O_O
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • Our neighbors used to have two labs, one died, and ever since, the other has pretty much barked, and barked, and barked and howled, and barked whenever she's in the outdoor kennel (which is a lot!). I've really learned to tune it out, though it can be ungodly when you're trying to get some shut eye. And now they have a Beagle.. oh my god. He literally screams his little heart out whenever somebody walks by the house. Then they're always screaming at him to shut up, and.. It's a cycle.
But it sounds like your neighbors are the type of people who complain because they can and they don't have anything better to do.. :|

  • I'm going to assume you live in an older neighborhood since your dad grew up there? So the houses can't be that close together. How on earth do they hear a dog barking inside your house? I live in a new development and my neighbors are fairly close, and my immediate next door neighbor has converted his garage into a bonus room of sorts and plays guitar and loud music that I can hear from the driveway, but once I'm inside I can't hear it anymore. Plus, do they really expect animal control to be able to take your DOG because it's BARKING? That's what dogs do, they bark, and usually you have no control over it. I'm also going to assume they're an older couple, with nothing better to do. I'd just ignore them and go about my business. :)

  • Way back when my mother worked for Animal Control, if your dog barked for more then six minutes at a time and you've had multiple warnings / neighbourhood complaints, Control could take your dog until a court date was set for you and the complainer(s). Once in court, requests could be made for your dog to be DEBARKED. And according to mom, dogs often were. Seems like a pretty severe punishment for such biased cases. These days things are only slightly different here. Depending on what state you're in the barking laws can be complicated. Probably best to Google it if you haven't already; and find out exactly what your state's BL is. O_O

  • I said State before I realized you live in Canada. xD Same idea, though. : )

  • My neighbors have called animal control on our dogs for barking at THEIR dogs being in OUR yard. Our dogs are in fences and can not really do anything but bark at their dogs when they are in our yard (our dogs' territory).
We have had many many many nights where their dogs barked for hours on end at NOTHING and we have not reported them to anyone. I REALLY hope karma bites them in the butt one day because their yippity yapping dogs are going to drive me nuts!!

  • Our neighbours have a crappy little terrier rat thing. I hate it, and it has tried to eat JD, whilst they just stand there with it on a stupid extendible lead. Oh how I hate those leads, as people that use them never seem to actually have control of their dog :|

But yeah, that stupid rat will bark near enough the entire time the owners are out. Which can be up until about midnight. It some how has access to the garden, and it being really hot we have the back door and windows open, so as soon as it runs in to the garden barking its brains out it gets REALLY loud and very off putting when you are trying to watch tv >.<

I've tried reporting it to the council, but they just send you some silly form where you have to log everytime it barks and for how long. Which got stupid, since we filled in the sheet in about 2hrs of noting down how it would bark for 3mins, stop for 2mins then start barking and howling for another 8mins. And I wasn't going to waste my life filling in this form noting every minute it barked or not.

Got to the point now where I just sit at my desk and scream "shut up", where it will run back into the house. We can still hear it when in the house, as our houses were meant to be "temporary" housing about 60yrs ago. But they still stand... and they are not made of brick. They are plasterboard, and terraced housing which makes it ever so un-sound proof. But at least when the dog runs into the house, it is somewhat muffled. Then I just put the volume up on the tv and all is good xD

Makes me wonder what JD gets up to whilst we are out >.> I know he barks at the post/newspaper being pushed through the door XD

Oh how I hate those things. Thankfully they are pretty much banned at dog shows but some people seem dead set on using them to potty their dogs ._. I have more control over Emme while she is off leash then people have when their dog is stripped to one of those /mini rant

  • I used to have an extendable lead when my dog was getting old... since he would run off and not come back (cause he couldn't see or hear) but around the streets he was always on a short lead (made the extendable short) for control. People always think they have to use the longest lead just because it can.. silly people... and Em relocating neighbours sounds like a good idea :D

sorry about stealing your post garf

That just goes to show that they are lazy and uncaring owners. They should not report your dog just because they have to listen to it every now ad again, while you have to listen to their's for several hours with short intervals in between.
