Breed List

edited June 2012 in Game Suggestions
I've brought this up before and basicly got shot down by many.
Maybe I just didn't phrase it right.

Okay, so the breed list.....
I have issues with it.
It's very long and only getting longer.
The window that comes up is very small and easy to skip breeds.
I've suggested before that I should be broken up to make searching easier. I've played this game in some form since 2006. And when I started there was probably only 1/4 or less of the breeds there are now.

I'm friends with many novices. They've told me that the list is very hard to wade through.
They don't know what breed is what.

So here's my official suggestion and I don't think it would cause too much extra coding, its just one extra step.

To make several drop down lists right next to each other by catagory.
Like sporting, companion, working, gardian breeds, northern breeds, feral, private breeds, Like they already are catagorized by but split up. Then there would only 20-30 breeds per list and help with the confusion and organization.
People are against mutts breeding as mixes because the breed list would be too long. Well what are we doing now?
I just think it wouldn't be to hard, would really help with orginization, clarity, presentation of the site, and ease frustration with searching.

:)
Okay, I step back prepared to be shot down again.

-LeoTaurus

 • I'd just like to note that just because a dog is a herding breed, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be best for herding. One of the top herding dogs on here was a Yorkie at one time :P

 • You can just type letters of the breed you're looking for and it comes up. :P It's best to have an idea of what you're looking before you go searching.

But many new players don't know all of the breeds.
They don't know what to look for.
I don't think we should design the game to only cater to very experienced players.
I don't know if any one else has noticed but there's been alot of new players who quit early on because the game has gotten too complicated to navigate.

Also,

Breeds are classified as certian things from history and tradition. I agree that some of the best dogs often jump catagories (like the hyenas being some of the best agility dogs)
But it would really help initial navigation.
There's alot of not common forigen breed names that alot of people don't know.
Often they are just skipped because the list is so long and people have the tendency to just scan for a familiar breed.
What a waste.
There are alot of unique breeds on here that are being over looked because of orginization.
 • Personally I don't think this would help make navigation/searching any easier. If you are brand new to this game, there's a good chance that you won't know what breed category means/what its applications are in the game (which, to be honest, breed categories matter very little in terms of eventing and breeding.) Also, if you are new to the game, or world of dog breeds, chopping up the list won't make the unusual breeds any more familiar. Players will still gravitate to breeds they are familiar with. Once they get the hang of the game and start striving to get 10x4s with their lines, then they may consider the lesser known or fantasy breeds. Or if they want to learn more about an unfamiliar breed, there is always Google. :)

Having so many dropdowns with which to search would, I think, make it more complicated for new players to understand. If you've never seen the search page before, there are already quite a few of filters there to utilize. Saying "Okay, decide which breed category you want to search in" by having so many different dropdown menus adds that many more filters to confuse new players. Or what if you know you want to work with, say, Border Collies, but you don't know which breed category they fit in? You would then have to scroll through each menu individually until you find your desired breed. That, to me, seems like a lot more work and even more to learn for a new player.

Yes, the current breed list is long. Yes, it will get longer as breeds are added to the game. Personally, I think this is a good thing as it means just that many more breeds players get to choose from. If you know your breed name, you can select the breed dropdown, begin typing, and your breed will pop up immediately. That seems far easier than hunting through multiple dropdowns.

If there were to be a division of sorts placed on the breed search list, I would want it to be a checkbox that would exclude (or include if unchecked) personal breeds. (Similar to the retired only search option.)
 • Aziu I agree with if anything adding a search option (check box) to the breed list. I actually think a search option would be nice. Say a player knows they want a lupus, herding, feral, terrier, or etc breed but aren't 100% sure what specific breed a search option would come in handy to narrow down the list.
 • I would only want the check box to include or not include personal breeds. Players can always look at <a href="http://virtualpups.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=65566"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">this list if they want to see breeds listed by type. :) (Yes it doesn't have -all- breeds on there but it is a handy place to start.)
 • well i came on to post a suggestion about the dog search on the puppy plaza and found this post that fits a bit what i ould like to know if others would find this helpful?

Suggestion: I was wondering how players would feel with the puppy plaza having an Import check box ?

Basicaly this would be able to seperate the imports from the born pups to make it easier on players who would like to buy some made imports. The reason i am suggesting this is because i love to buy already made imports( i collect them until i have enough to make a line). It would also help control the dog population a bit with the option to check quickly if the breed you want has some already for sale.

thank you
: )
 • That has been suggested numerous times. The problem with it is that each and every import would have to have a special tag in the code to denote it as an import and the process of running this kind of search would be a huge tax on the server, creating more lag.
 • ah i see oh well it will make me work : )

That was mine 8D Triple Threat's Affair To Remember.
Oh and he was. |D

The long list of breeds has never bothered me, but that's probably just because I use the forums as reference, or when trying to pick a breed to work on, I google a list of breeds I might be interested in, and then cross reference to see if they have it on VP.
