Muscle Strains

edited April 2012 in Vent
Argh, muscle strains. I hate them! I have one in my lower back right now. It's very frustrating. I'm almost certain it's nothing more than a muscle strain, of it goes more than a week I'll need to get it looked at. It doesn't come a much of a surprise, though. I seem very prone to it, considering that
A. I am wicked out of shape
B. I'm SO not flexible (still can't touch my toes)
C. I always carry my heavy backpack over one shoulder
Then, I was lifting and tossing around logs last Sunday. It seems to be slowly getting better, doesn't really constantly ache anymore. It gets really stiff though, I can't sit around for long. Not to mention if a move a certain way.. Ouch.

Have anyone else had this before? What helps?

I was in a car accident about a year ago and ever since then my back has been permantly wacked.
I'm sure your's is just a strain like you said. If you eat Bananas, that should give you the potassium that helps with muscle aches. Used to eat tons of those during swim. Also, heat helps. Maybe having someone who is good at massages look at it too. Just don't bend over a lot and keep still. Every night when you go to bed, do some simple yoga stretches. Do them lightly though. The breathing exercises work too (:

I don't like taking medication unless I DEFINITELY have to but ibuprofen helps out if it gets super bad.

I'm sorry Frost. I hope that all helps. A year, almost two years with my back, you learn some things XD
 • Ooh, ouch. That must really suck! This is my first back ache, so of course I freaked out at first... Thought it was Scoliosis. XD I'd hate to need to deal with it often.

Thanks, though! I believe there's a banana on the counter, maybe I'll snatch that up tomorrow morning. I've realized that stretching does help for a little while.

And I like to avoid medicine, too.. That's always been my last resort.

 • Heat definitely works, for about 7years now I've had back-ache a lot, since I injured it on a trampoline and then went on a school trip to France on a coach, 7 or something hours sat on a coach made it worse.

If your sat down, try and re-position yourself every like 30mins or something, just to stop it getting stiff, and whatever you do, don't lie down on the sofa during the day... its murder to get up again.

Also recently I strained my biceps in my right arm (kinda fell onto the bus, which was silly), and that still hurts and it was about 3weeks ago.

Also if pain gets very bad take ibuprofen and paracetamol together, either 4 at once or 2 every 2hours (alternating between ibuprofen & paracetamol). Ibuprofen helps any swelling that may occur too.

My dad has heat packs & cool packs in the house at all times since he has back problems as well, and they work wonders. And a bath or shower with hot water will help too :D

Hope you get better soon, also another thing that helps is light exercise, like walking around and stuff. Doctor told me to take light strolls when I hurt my back last :)
