TOO MUCH HW!!!

edited March 2012 in Vent
Hey guys, I know that every school basically has homework. I understand that homework helps you with your school work. But my school, it takes the whole day, until I go to sleep! Is that normal? Do you guys experience that too? If so, what should I do about it? Thanks you guys, just wanna let out my anger...

 • Is your homework taking you the whole day because of how much you're assigned or is it difficult work? I know you said there's too much but it could be the same depending upon the interpretation. :3 When I got homework, I would do the easiest stuff first, saving the more difficult (or time consuming) stuff for later. I've always been a really bad procrastinator though; math homework was always done the day it was due, I spent less than an hour on essays, and did large projects the night before they were to be turned in.

If you're struggling to get your homework done because of the volume, my only advice is to try and get it done while you have downtime at school (i.e., lunch). It may make you seem like a nerd or whatever, but if it helps keep you on top of things then it shouldn't matter. If you're struggling because a lot of it is hard, you could try to seek out tutoring. The work might be faster to get through if you have a better understanding of what it is you're doing.

Some teachers will be considerate if you politely ask to speak with them regarding the amount of homework you've been assigned. If several kids are having issues keeping up, especially in a particular class, then it is something that needs to be brought to the teacher's attention. They might be a little lenient on due dates or reduce the workload for the day. If you use this approach though, make sure not to go about it in a negative way. Don't just say something blunt like "You're giving too much homework." Teachers hear that a lot, so they tend to dismiss it. Now there will be some teachers who will just act like they flat out don't care, even with several 'complaints'. If that's the case, you could try talking to a guidance counselor, though I'm not sure there's much they can do.

Getting through those piles of homework seems really tedious now, but if you can manage to stay that focused and get your work done, you'll no doubt be a successful adult when you're older. Homework teaches us how to work under pressure and meet deadlines, which you'll face a lot in the 'real world'. But if you need help, even if it's just to tell your teachers that you feel exhausted with the workload, there's nothing wrong with asking for assistance.

Oh and one other good thing to try would be brief breaks. After you finish a chapter or section, reward yourself with a short break to stretch your legs, get some water, and just escape the work for a little bit. It might help you keep your mind 'fresh' for the next batch until you finish the days work, or at least help keep you from going insane. ;)

 • If your struggling with work at home ask your parents for help, since they probably know a bit about the subject. I always used to struggle with English homework and sometimes I struggled with Math and my parents both used to help.

Taking breaks as Ana said is especially important, as if something is really frustrating you, take a 5-10mins and go back to it, and you'll look at it in a different light.

Depending on how the homework is given, do it as soon as you get it so then it is not piling up. Cause I used to wait until the last minute to do my work and i'd struggle getting it done in time because I had other things to complete. Currently I have 2weeks to complete 2 pieces of work. Getting around that is hard. What I have been doing, is getting the easiest part of the first one done (film making) so I have my film completed. And next week I will be completing my database assignment.

Also if you're finding the work extremely difficult. Have a go at it at home, see how much you can actually do and have a try at some of the other stuff that you're really struggling with and go to the teacher after class and state how you were struggling since they usually will give you other tasks (possibly more homework) that's easier to give you a better understanding. Or they will explain the homework to you before you go home.

If your not struggling with the homework then Time Management is key. Every night before you go to do your homework see what you have to do for the next day, put it in a pile, sort through it and see what will be the quickest to get done. And do it in that kind of order. If you have a piece that's for the next week do a few questions a night, and spend maybe 10mins a night throughout the week doing it so then the night before its due in you have nearly all of it done.

 • Thanks guys. I would really take the advice into mind. To be honest, everyone in my class struggles with homework. Their (and my) parents talked about it to the teacher during parent-teacher-conference, but it doesn't seem the teacher listens. But thanks again for the advice! It really does help.
