Horse Drawing?

edited February 2012 in Artist Alley
I've been at it again... Drawing. XD I drew the lines in math class today, since I sit in the back, no one stopped me. I drew this completely free hand, and colored it when I got home. It was inspired by The Scorpio Races, and I intended to put a quote from the book along the top. I don't have time to scan it, so I took a picture. Sorry about the quality. But, what do you guys think?

<a href="http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd436/Frostbight8/8e3bd755.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd4 ... 3bd755.jpg

Critique? (Obviously I'm not the best artist, I know that, but ways to make the coloring better?)

 • I LOVE THAT BOOK
I'm actually doing some Corr art currently :p
I have a digital painting I'm working on, and then I'm going to do a watercolour pencil portrait of him. :3
And eventually I'd like to draw Kendrick. He sounds -very- attractive xD

Only tips I'm going to give at the moment (have to finish two dogs and get a shower >.> ) is that shading is a must..even if you don't know exactly where the shadows/highlights should be, you should be able to just eye-ball the majority of them. :3

 • Haha, I know, right? It was my obsession for a couple months after I read it.

Ooh, you'll need to share some of your Corr art! I have to agree, Puck is a lucky girl. XD

Alright, thanks! I was thinking about doing that, but I couldn't locate the black. -_-

 • Actually, black isn't what you would shade with :p
I usually do a really light layer of whatever colour you're using, and progressively darken in where the shadows would go. Horses are also different shades, red base coats especially, along with any dilutes. For a chestnut horse, I would probably go with using a light orange to lay down the base, a bit of a darker orange for some of the lighter shadows, and then more of a red-orange for the darkest. Black is only used very little, and lightly for the absolute darkest shadows, such as right under the neck and where the "underarms" are.
