Staff Bully?

My mom, my brother, sister and I are going to be moving into a smallish house in March. We are planning on getting a dog (yay!). We need something that will do okay in a smaller house, requires little grooming, and is loving and a good companion. We also need something that doesn't get separation anxiety, because me and my siblings go to school every day, and my mom works a few days out of the week. After looking around, I found the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. It seems like an almost perfect dog for us, based from several websites. Does it sounds like it fits our lifestyle? :-)

  • I'll start off by saying that any dog of any breed can get SA. Staffords are pretty active dogs but can do well in an apartment. If you choose to go with this breed, please do more research and try to find people in your area who actually own them. If you go with a breeder, make sure that they are good and health test their stock. Or there's always rescue! There are a lot of purebred Staffs in breed rescue too.
  • My aunt and her family are in the same situation as you, and they have a StaffyBull. xD He does great, although he probably wouldn't do so good without the spacious backyard they have. He has a ton of energy though, it can get a little wild at times, you can expect to be taking lots of walks. But he is very family oriented, and one of the absolute best breed with kids. They love chewing on things, so a ton of toys is a must. Only complaint they have is his lack of guarding ability. He welcomes strangers into their home without hesitation. Overall a very people friendly, outgoing, affectionate, curious, obedient, and wild dog that will be great as long as every member of your household learns how to control him properly.
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • Zagari- yes, my mom would never get an unhealthy dog. When we decide on our dog, she is actually having our vet come out witth us and check it for any problems. XD<br><br>Garfieldz- Yes, well, sorta. My mom has had dogs, but never in my lifetime. :-) <br><br>Zyn- we wouldn't have a backyard, but literally right outside the condo is a huge park/field and spring. My sister and I like to play outside, so pretty much everyday after school doggy would come with us to play outside for at least an hour. :-)
  • Staffy sounds like a good size/breed for where you're going to be living then. Plus they're freaking adorable. I think they're a little bit harder to control than some breeds but with firm training and early socialization, they sound like really good dogs. Their size is pretty much perfect too.
  • Yay! I thought so. xD<br><br>Aren't they cute? I looove Pit Bulls, and when I found these, I got all excited! They look like pits, and they're pretty much perfect for our family. :D

You mentioned you live in an apartment so be sure your building doesn't have breed restrictions. The aren't pit bulls, but they get their reputation. :(
  • This a english staffy your talking about...? becuase they really don't look like the APBT the american staffy is the one a lot of people get mixed up with APBT.

  • I don't think they look like APBTs AT ALL. But I can see how people could confuse the two. In my experience Staffies have way different personalities then Pits, and they've all been fantastic with people. They're just little bundles of energy. I second the control thing though, dominance must be shown and training done very early on. Good luck. :)
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • Their face and body structure somewhat look alike to me.. but that may just be me. xD
  • Are you sure the city allows then? Ive yet to find an place to live that allows "dangerous" breeds. Encluding, APBT, German Shepherds, Yes, staffys, ect. and the ones i have found usually woulnt accept any dog over 10 lbs.

<br><br>Wow, really? Ive lived in four different cities that allowed both my APBTs and Tosas. <br><br>

<br><br>Its not just you. xD A ton of people confuse the two breeds. I breed APBTs, that could have something to do with the fact that they are very distinguishable <span style="font-weight:bold">to me</span> atleast. The REAL APBT looks completely different from any Staffy breed. Its the mixed breeds that people breed these days and call Pitbulls that look like Staffs and get the bad reputation. Btw, you said you love Pitbulls, were they just never an option then? Why get a dog because it looks like a Pit when you can just get a Pit? lol.

  • Zyn- I have been begging and begging for a Pitbull. It's not that that my mom doesn't like the breed, she just doesn't want a dog the size of a pit, because we're moving into a smaller house. Which is why we may not be able to even get a staff. :(

A healthy PURE Pitbull can weigh around 25-35 pounds, they get bigger, but smaller/muscular ones are the kind you'd be looking for. Theyre the same weight if not smaller then a Staff. :) And they require little room indoors as long as they're exercised frequently and have lots of toys/play time. I think you should do a little more research for your mom, find facts and info to show her, then try begging again. xD lol.

  • I think 30-50 pounds is a more accurate weight range for the APBT. Some do come smaller but I've never met an adult under 28 pounds. Regardless, they are roughly the same size. SBTs have more bulk than an APBT. Also, it's less common, but you may want to be aware of their dog/animal aggression. It's something that could come up and should not be faulted.
  • My mom wants a pug real bad. She's had them and loves them. I really wish we could get a staff. Who knows, maybe we will. I hope this information will help persuade my mom, that's why I made the thread. XD
  • A pug? Ew, yuck! lol Smushed faces are not very appealing to me. No offense to anyone who likes 'em. <br><br>Good luck with whatever dog you get. Also, maybe try some shelters too. I cannot tell you how many pugs we've had at our shelter. We've had some pretty young pups too.
  • You said you're moving into a condo, so you need to be aware that condo's <span style="font-style:italic">can</span> tell you what animals you may and may not own, and a whole bunch of other things you can and cant do... If the homeowners association where you move says no "dangerous breeds" then you're probably out of luck, and most will. While you may own a condo it's till not the same as owning a house.

  • @Zag - That's why I said the smaller/muscular ones were the one's I was talking about, those were the ones she'd be looking at. Pumpkin, one of our best males weighs 25 pounds, but can pull over a thousand. They're incredibly strong dogs, something that needs to be mentioned. xD A lot of people underestimate them because of size, but Pitbulls are beast, and so are Staffys. My cousins hunting Staffs bring down three hundred pound boars no problem. I think Pugs are... an interesting choice. O.o All I can really associate them with is snorting, mouth breathing, and the movie Men In Black. O_o But they would fit your criteria. xD

  • I don't want to sound mean or anything but wants the point of getting a terrier when you said wont be home most the day, and you may not be having a yard.<br>If your mother wants a pug than go with that anyways, its going to be the familys dog anyways? your better off getting the dog you want when you know you will have the time to spend with it training and such.<br><br>Just thinking on the dogs part really T.T.<br><br>But a cross breed is just as great, and I know there are heaps and heaps of staffy or pit bull crosses in shelters which as far as I know are harder to find homes for they keep going on about?<br><br>A friend of mine has a pit bull cross chihuahua and she is really small..

<br><br>Because we want a dog like this, and it suits our lifestyle pretty well. Yes, we won't have a yard directly at our house, but like I said, there is a big park right across the street that it would be able to play in for a large amount of time each day. We also worked out with my dad that he would take it the days we are with him, which would mean that my dad would take him out while we are at school. ;)
  • Answer honestly and this may help:<br><br><a href="http://animal.discovery.com/breed-selector/dog-breeds.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://animal.discovery.com/breed-selec ... reeds.html</a>
