Romeo's Journey *It's been crazy...*

Let's start with an introduction!

July 4th, 2012 Well...I did it. Today I got on Romeo for the first time ever.
Not sure why I picked today...not sure why I did it without thinking, but I did it.
He was being especially good during the normal training I do with him daily and my trainer was there. She said "What are you thinking, kid?" and I just nodded and that was it.
She gave me a leg up and I was on my stomach laying over him. He didn't even flinch! He was more concerned about getting back to his food. I felt comfortable so I swung my leg over and sat up. It was an AMAZING feeling to finally be up on him. He turned and nudged my foot a little, then proceeded to sigh and drop his head. We did a couple circles with me on him then I hopped off and let him eat. I was kind of in shock considering I wasn't planning on doing that at all today.
I consider this his first step of being broke. I can sit on him and walk in a circle without him panicking or getting nervous.
I love his horse, so, so, SO much!

Barn Name: Romeo
Show Name: Juliet's Muse
Breed: American Quarter Horse
Color: Bay
Age: 8 years
Height: 15hh
Temperament: Calm & friendly but skittish
Story: Romeo and his pasture mate, Cowboy, were rescued from a neglectful owner that left them in a field to basically starve to death. When Romeo was brought to his current home he was about 200 pounds underweight (Cowboy about 300 pounds underweight) and extremely shy and was not trusting at all. When they went to pick him and Cowboy up they would not load into a trailer and had to be walked about 6 miles to the barn. After months of tender loving care and extensive veterinary care, both Romeo and Cowboy made a full recovery. Romeo is not broken in yet but will be in June! Cowboy is broke but still learning.

So now that you know a bit more about Romeo, let me tell you what this who post is about.
I now own Romeo and I am continuing his rehabilitation process. I am also going to break him this June with the help of my trainer. I have also taught him some commands and have LOVED training him so far. This post is for me to keep updates and share with you his progress over the next few months and even the next year or so!

With that being said, let me show you my beautiful boy!

UPDATE: I will now start to post all of the updates on this (the first post). I'll also post links instead of the actual picture and shenanigans ;)

PICTURES:
<a href="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/100_5282.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Eating
<a href="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/romeo1.png"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Wondering what the crazy dogs are doing
<a href="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/romeo2.png"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Following me around
<a href="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/romeo3.png"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Looking for loose treats
<a href="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/romeo1-1.png"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Showing off one of his tricks
<a href="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/romeo2-1.png"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">He's still a bit skinny but gaining weight well
<a href="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/romeo3-1.png"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">He likes to be next to you ALL the time
<a href="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/romeo4.png"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Showing off again
<a href="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/romeo5.png"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Listening to the dogs going crazy
<a href="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/100_5435.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">first time getting the saddle pad/saddle/girth on in one try without him flipping out since the whole issue with the guy scaring him
<a href="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/100_5444.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">I don't wanna walk all the way over to you!
<a href="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/100_5475.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Getting more muscle

VIDEOS:
<a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/?action=view¤t=RomeoTrust.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Learning to trust other people
<a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/?action=view¤t=100_5420.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">He's such a turd!!!
<a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/?action=view¤t=100_5422.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Randomness of him being his adorable self
<a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/?action=view¤t=100_5427.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Random Cre in the mud lol (note: I know the paddock is in HORRENDOUS condition but they are only in there so we can move hay barrels, don't get all concerned ;) )
<a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/?action=view¤t=100_5431.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Romeo update
(sorry about the wind!) <a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/?action=view¤t=100_5446.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Just chilling out, following me around
<a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/?action=view¤t=RomeoFreeLungeMontageFinished.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Free Lunging Romeo
<a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/?action=view¤t=RomeosJourneycontinued3edit_0001.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Milestone Update!
<a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/?action=view¤t=RoFreeLungeLongVersion.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Hilarious Free Lunging Fun Time!
<a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/?action=view¤t=Ridingnoface.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Fourth time mounted on Ro

  • Oh my word! Hes looking great! <3

  • my lord! look at this!

<img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/romeo3-1.png"; alt="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/romeo3-1.png"; class="bb-image" />
Romeo

<img src="http://i42.tinypic.com/mwuwc0.jpg"; alt="http://i42.tinypic.com/mwuwc0.jpg"; class="bb-image" />
Roman

Notice how close their faces and color look?!
  • He's a million times better then he was just a few months ago! He even looks more confident.

Holy cow! They looks pretty similar!
Oh, Vamp, is that a better conformation pic to go off of? Can you give me a little critique on his conf if it is?
    robanner_zps46f75ebe.png
  • He's a taaad but butt high. Not much though. He's got a low tie in to the neck and his neck is a litle short, with a rough throat latch. Cant comment at all on his legs as he isnt standing with them under him except that he looks like he ties in under the knee in the back and his pasterns are a bit upright. his shoulder is a bit steep as well. Now for the good stuff ;D His face is gorgeous. Very sweet expression. He's very even and balanced which is the first thing you look for in a halter horse. He's got some potential for good muscling as even when he's out of work and lacking he's got some power it looks like. He looks like he's ewe necked but that can be corrected with collection. His topline is lacking as well but of course he was starved so thats gonna go away with time as well.

(Thats my version of a little critic ;D)
  • Thank you very much for critiquing him :)
He'll gain much more muscle now that is body is getting better at retaining fat and not eating away his muscles for nutrients like it was before.
He's pretty powerful like you mentioned. In all honesty, with the way he moves and his pace he might make a good hunter horse.
I can't wait until summer when we can break him :D

  • xD i cant wait to see him under saddle. Ive heard that QH's make great hunters actually. Ive sure seen some good ones!
I'm soooo excited to get him under saddle. The past few months I've been tacking him and getting him used to that. He finally isn't afraid of the girth being tightened. He still isn't a fan of the bit, but I might end up using a bitless bridle on him. We're probably going to start him on copper rollers though.
I've seen some great QH hunters too, I'm hopeful for him but, I think he'll also make a nice pleasure horse.

    robanner_zps46f75ebe.png
  • Oh! I almost forgot! Those pictures were actually taken at my new barn that we are moving into at the moment! There are already lots of horses there so we will have lots of pictures of the other horses as well ^.^

  • UPDATE: February 10th, 2012

Whoever sent me their cold weather and snow needs to take it back!
It's been WAAAY too cold for me to bring him in and work with him. We also have halfway moved into our new house/farm and I have now brought him home! He has been introduced to Creole and Georgia as well as the boarders' horses and he's doing very well.
So yes, Romeo is officially HOME!
Whenever it gets warm enough for me to work with him some more I'll get pictures and video, but at the moment it's too cold and I'm too busy >.<
    robanner_zps46f75ebe.png
  • UPDATE: February 19th, 2012

I haven't been able to work with him lately because of this crappy weather we've been having. Our barn isle has been flooding with the rain and melting snow >.< I am also going to be recording some of the things he has learned and also try to record the first time I fully tack him. He is still having some issues with taking a bit nicely so we'll see how that goes xD
He has done very well with having a saddle placed on his back with a fair amount of force, and he could care less about the slapping down of the stirrups ^.^
He usually does well with the girth but is still a little spooky about it. His biggest issue right now is the bridle. He still is not a big fan of it and we've tried numerous methods to get him used to it, seems like it may just be one of his quirks that will only take time to get used to it.

*edit*
I may also make a special video of Ro especially for my lovely VPians. ^.^
    robanner_zps46f75ebe.png
  • Yay for video updates!!!

<a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/?action=view¤t=100_5420.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69 ... 0_5420.mp4

and like the genius I am, I did set up my camera when I was tacking Ro, but of course...I never hit the record button *FACEPALM OF FAIL*. So I guess you can disregard the 'I'll go get my saddle and we'll get started' part lol
<a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/?action=view¤t=100_5422.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69 ... 0_5422.mp4

It should be pretty nice this Thursday so I'll probably bring him back in and do some more work with him ^.^

    robanner_zps46f75ebe.png
  • Update:

Romeo is not getting used to the bit and bridle as quickly as I had hoped so at this point in his training we are at a stand still until he gets better at wearing it.
He's not terrible about it, but I don't feel comfortable with continuing his direction training until I'm sure he's better at taking a bit and whatnot. It's the first real snag I've had with him so I'm happy we've gotten this far! I will hopefully have a few pics and maybe a video this week depending on if I have the time to edit and upload ;)
    robanner_zps46f75ebe.png
  • UPDATE

Well, I've run into a problem, and rather than re-explaining, here's my vent post: <a href="http://virtualpups.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=79086"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">viewtopic.php?f=29&t=79086
Ro didn't do too well today, he was terrified of him head being touched and it's really frustrating and discouraging.
I have a quick update video of him, but I'm debating on posting it just because I sound so condescending and frustrated in it. I didn't mean to be but I am angry and it was how I was feeling at the time. I'm being optimistic and hoping he will come around and do well with the desensitizing again, but it's a delay that I didn't plan on having.
In other news...NEW DOG! Yea!!! His name is Wyatt and he's a GS/Husky mix! Added pics of him!
I also have a quick video of Knip (aka Cre) being weird about standing in the mud that I might upload :)

*EDIT*
posted new videos and pics ;)

  • I wouldn't worry too terribly about him. Frustration is only gonna freak him out more O-o If he gave into handling once he will again. You've already figured out how he operated once. Hopefully he'll come back around. At the beginning of the year i had Rosie going on a loose rein at a slow trot and then she jumped the fence and im still working on getting her to slow down. I had to backtrack on some things but were finally to almost where we were. Its not ideal but i had to keep reminding myself id done it once before!
It's just so....UGH! lol It's all mind games with him, figuring out what he's sensitive about so you're right...I figured him out once, I can do it again. I'm only frustrated about it because it took weeks for him to trust me and weeks more to figure him out. At this point I'm more worried about him trusting me. I don't want him to be afraid of me or anyone else for that matter.
I will be optimistic and I'm forcing myself to -kind of- forgive the man...unless he doe sit again of course.
Ro did a bit better today, he isn't freaking out when I raise my arm or hand but he does flinch at the lead rope right now.
