Speech...Help..Please! =DD

Okay so I have to do an Informative speech in my oral communications class and I have decided to do it on Puppy Mills. The speech has to be 5-7 mins long and I plan on showing a video but that can not be counted into the time limit. So any one have any ideas on Starters for the speech and or sites with info I can use? Please and Thank you =DD

 • These sites would be good information for your speech.

<a href="http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/campaigns/stop_puppy_mills/"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">HSUS Stop Puppy Mills Campaign This one has a video on their website and I'm sure you could use it (or a portion of it) with your speech.
<a href="http://www.aspca.org/Fight-Animal-Cruelty/puppy-mills.aspx"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">ASPCA Puppy Mill Campaign
<a href="http://www.prisonersofgreed.org/"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Prisoners of Greed, an activist organization.

A good way to start the speech would be to describe the living conditions of puppy mill dogs, especially if you bring up temperature extremes (i.e., heat exhaustion/heat stroke in summer). You could also start it off with pet overpopulation statistics, because while it doesn't entirely relate to puppy mills, puppy mills do contribute to overpopulation. Those particular statistics are also incredibly shocking (4 million pets euthanized a year -- about one every eight seconds). Then you could make a statement how puppy mill pets often contribute to shelter overpopulation (i.e., illness).

I'd actually think a good way to open the speech would be something along these lines.

"How much is that puppy in the window? Millions of Americans have walked into pet stores and have seen the wide selection that many establishments offer. We are often delighted by the small, furry balls of energy. Some customers choose to take these seemingly healthy animals home. So again I ask, how much is that puppy in the window? Nine out of every ten puppies sold in pet stores come from cruel places called puppy mills. There, those pups were raised in horrific conditions, including restricted cages and unreliable care. The price of that puppy in the window is incredible abuse and pain for all involved..."

I think good points would include (but not limited to): living conditions, poor health of stock and offspring, lack of veterinary care, overpopulation, impulse purchases, false sense of rescue, current laws and legislation in the US, laws and legislation in foreign countries, and infection issues for the general public. Obviously you wouldn't be able to include all of those, but it does give you some ideas.

 • Just a question, can you have a power point going at all times? Like to show pictures? f you can maybe start with the dogs at the store then switch over to the dogs at the puppy mill. Maybe you can include something about the auctions that they do too? I know there is one or two videos about them, showing what the people say and where the dogs are kept.

One last thing don't forget the big one puppies have, birth defects.

 • Ugh. I turned on the news this morning to see that a puppy "boutique" in my area was just shut down because all of the thirty-nine puppies had mild to severe cases of pneumonia and other illnesses, and people walking by noticed that some of the dogs were wandering around the store way after closing time. All of the dogs were from puppy mills and the whole thing is really sad.

I would definitely talk about puppys' lives after the puppy mill too. They generally get sold to crappy pet "boutiques", "galores", etc, and then since most people have done their research and generally go to shelters or breeders for their pets, they don't usually find good homes after either.
