Good starters for speech?!

edited January 2012 in General Discussion
Okay guys! Im completely stumped! I have a public speech i need to make and i have two topics.. my state i live in.. or rodeo. I have NO idea how im going to start my speech. It has to be VERY VERY attention grabbing and i got nothing! I was thinking of signing my speech but ive ruled it out cuz i will have a microphone and i really have no idea how i would tie it into my speech. BRAINSTORM WITH ME PEOPLE!!

  • RODEO

I did a speech on it last year for my Drama and Speech class. :3
I'll see if I can dig up my outline I did for it. :p

But, when you say rodeo, do you mean roping, bull riding, broncs, barrels, and everything, or just something specific? Coz my was for overall pro-rodeo xD

  • Depending on the topic you choose depends on how to start your speech, but a great way of grabbing attention is starting with an unusual or shocking fact. I may be able to think more tomorrow since its like nearly midnight

  • ;D im definitally looking for something shocking to begin with. Thats gonna be what i REALLY need. Ill be able to write after i get that but im pulling a blank up for that one. Im probably gonna do rodeo. This girl one year did a radio introduction and it was AMAZING! I just cant think of anything i think is IT.. ya know? Ive got idea but jokes and stuff facts just doesnt seem spontaneous enough
  • if you could find a really shocking fact about rodeo (good or bad) that makes people think about it. Just something to get the audience thinking WOW! this is going to be really good/interesting

  • I dont really want to find a shocking fact truely. Im supposed to be pro rodeo because this is for a rodeo contest ROFL! Im kind of thinking of finding a hilarious rodeo story that i can really use my hands and voice fluctuations on and opening up with that. Anyone have any good rodeo stories?! ;D
  • Well, if you decide rodeo, start with a cattle whistle or a very cliche Yee Haw. Don't know if you can use "aids" in your speech, but maybe start with a sound recording of 8 seconds of a bull being ridden or a horse going around barrels.

I'm not sure what state you live in, but maybe a line or two from the state song or slogan. Like Alabama is "Heart of Dixie" for a slogan
    Along for the ride!
• I dont THINK props are allowed. Im supposed to be using one hand to hold the microphone and using my other for "talking with my hands"
  • Maybe describe something about it? Including EVERY detail of ridding barrels or cow roping or such. Make it vary dramatic.

  • Last time i did this contest i actually SANG the first four verses of our State song ;D it was interesting.
  • Ooo, can you do spoons? If so, use the spoons to make the sound of a horse galloping for 13 seconds, like a horse running a barrel pattern.

  • Well..it seems that I don't have my outline on the computer >.<
But, it should be in a folder somewhere..but I don't have time to look for it now, lol.

I would suggest something about bull riding to start off. People love hearing about danger, and bull riding (imo) is one of the most dangerous rodeo events..considering that most bulls try and kill you after you're off, unlike broncs, lol.

But, I'll make it short, sweet, and to the point...seeing as I'm suppose to be getting ready to go out, lol. Which you should totally text me about, lol.

I would say something about how they'd react having a what, 1800lb bull with horns charging after them and trying to kill them. I think I said something like that to start mine off..It seemed to catch the attention of the whole class..and the old teacher. xD
I did really bad with the rest of it (mono-tone..) and no one seemed interested, but catch did make an impression on everyone, lol. :p

  • What do you guys think of this??

Here we go, to the rodeo,
For a rousing, rollicking time.
To drink a beer, and give a cheer
For the go-rounds fastest time.

Cheer the spills, and all the thrills,
Of the bucking horse, and bull.
Join the throaty roar, that beats down o'er
The arena, from the bleachers full.

There's the crushing hush, the heady rush,
For a bull rider that is down,
Then comes relief, saved from grief,
He's snatched from harm by the clown.

We'll cheer the chaps, in flashing chaps,
And cheer for the critters they ride.
The girls barrel race. Their time and space
Are combined and personified.

The lariats smoke, as ropers rope
At the horns, and then at the heels.
Calf horses slide, as their riders glide
To the calf, as he cartwheels.

Kids get their fill, They eat and they swill
Hotdogs, and strawberry pop.
Clouds in the west give rumbling protest.
We're shocked by a lone raindrop.

Each calf's been tied, The re-rides tried.
And here comes a man with a broom.
Back home we'll go, from the rodeo,
Once the kids have hit the bathroom.

Each nose has a burn, We no longer yearn,
To be a part of the rodeo clique.
It's been a thrill, but we've had our fill
Of cowboys.. at least for a week.
  • It looks good, but I dunno about how your school is, but I couldn't get the people in my class listen to three sentences, much less eight verses. You may want to stick with a cool story, something that'll get them more involved than a poem or song.

  • I actually did find one i like better. Its not a school speech. Its actually a public speech. As in literally public. Over the radio and everything O-o

Just look in them eyes—all red an’ mean,

horns juttin’ outta each side a his bean.

An’ that hump on his neck—ya better beware,

you’ll be wishin’ right quick you could hang on there.

See them big muscles ripplin’ at the flank,

they got the power of a Sherman Tank.

Don’t underestimate them knobby knees—

they can turn on a dime anytime they please.

Those cloven hooves can stomp ya good

if ya ain’t quick enough to scoot when ya should.

An’ that mighty rear will twist ‘n turn—

make ya yell for your Mama when legs start ta burn.

That boney tail, it’ll swish ‘n sway—

rap ya upside the head in the dust ‘n fray.

He’s a half ton killer—got the temper to prove it,

so hop up there, an’ git right to it.

But if ya got any sense in your noggin at all,

you’ll git in that truck, an’ down the road you’ll haul.

So look him over, ya son-of-a-gun,

then take off them spurs, an’ run kid—run!

What do yall think of this one?
  • Oh, that's pretty cool then. I dunno about giving a long poem intro though, but... I get ADD with poetry 8'D Stories are more fun and personal.

  • Does everyone have to do it? Or just you? XD
Being pro rodeo doesn't mean you know everything about the rodeo. It means you know alot and are willing to learn more. ;D Thats how I think of it.

  • Starting with something funny always grabs the attention of listeners, so a funny story would be awesome. ;D
