ODF?

Stupid stupid stupid. I hate banks. A couple weeks ago I went in to open my savings account back up after it was closed from inactivity. I've been putting all of my paychecks in savings so I won't spend them and just spending my tips. One of my options was using my savings account as overdraft protection for my checking account, and of course I was all for that. I haven't been using my card at all, just putting money in savings and leaving my checking account empty, but there have been two instances where I've not had any cash on me and have had to use my card to get gas, so I just assumed that it would take the money out of my savings account and that would be that. No. I just got onto my online banking to see if my check from yesterday had gone through yet, and I've been charged a total of $25 worth of overdraft fees from two transactions. So even though the money was in my account, and I was spending MY money, I've lost almost $30. The lady at the bank didn't tell me it would charge me for an overdraft, all she told me was that my savings was overdraft protection. I'm so pissed. That's a whole tank of gas, gone!

  • Using your savings as overdraft protection only means the bank won't bounce a check if the money is in savings. They still charge you for being overdrafted on the checking as they are 2 separate accounts. Probably should have explained that better to you though.

  • If I had known, I wouldn't be as upset over losing that money, but since the only thing she said to me was 'okay, your savings is set to overdraft protection' and then moved on, I'm a little irritated.

  • Yeah, they're going to get the money out of you one way or another.

  • Do you use a normal bank or a credit union? I know some credit unions will just transfer funds to cover charges without charging you fees, the one my mother uses does and I think mine does too.

  • I'm with Wells Fargo, so it's a bank. And I have a student account, so you think they would have thought to better inform me.
