Pookie..

edited January 2012 in Vent
Lately my dog has gotten into this habit of, as we describe it, digging at her ears. Really she just sits there for a couple minutes and really scratches at her ears. We've had the vet check it out multiple times, said that the fur in her ears needed to be reduced and it was just yeast. So, since she goes to the groomers once a month to get her face trimmed, we have them clean up her ears. She STILL "digs" at them. Today I notice a raw spot near her eye, so she must be missing her ear sometimes and getting near her eye. I figure sometime she will get her eye, and get it good. I've started letting her scratch a little, but stopping her before she starts to really get at it. I cannot police her 24/7, and I'd rather not put a cone on her while we're gone, but it's getting to almost be an obsession with her.

Any ideas?

 • Ah Coby does that constantly. I feel so bad for him :( Maybe ask your vet about Ottomax ear medicine, it's helped Coby in the past, hopefully it might help Pookie as well. Good luck!

 • Buddy used to do it all the time. I don't know if the ears actually got better or he associated his dislike of me cleaning them out and stopping. Either way, when he'd start scratching them, I'd get a washcloth and put some rubbing alcohol on it and clean his ears.

 • Allie had very bad itching for a long time, I think due to food allergies. Could it be the weather, maybe? Or, any allergies? We switched her food, and she still itched. It eventually turned into a nervous habit or what not. Obviously there's no way for telling through a little description given on the internet, eh. XD But, good luck with her. I hope she feels better soon. <3 Constantly itching is no fun.
 • Rockie- Pook is due for a rabies shot so we'll be heading to the vet soon, we'll see what she thinks about that.

Bama- Haha, Pook hates having her ears cleaned, so that may work!

Patty- I think it's becoming a nervous thing for Pook, too.. As well as her obsessive licking. She does this in all seasons and weather, but it may be food..

 • What is she eating?
 • Right now she's on Evo dry food.

 • How long has she been eating it? Has it ever caused her a problem before? My dog has randomly developed food allergies on occasion. We just switch out foods semi- often so it doesn't happen. I wouldn't suggest doing that unless you can conclude that it is the food causing the problem, not something else.
 • I know when cats do that, it means theirs something wrong with their ears like an infection. Usually the vet will just put tweezers in the ear and twist up the hair and yank it out. Some vets do it some don't. It could be a ear infection, and the vet would just have to look at the ear wax and see. Or it could be allergies.
