My Very First Dog(s):

(We got three dogs at the same time. So they were all my first dogs. xD These are a few of the moments I remember most:)

-Adding my other dog's story-

Dog #1:

- A Dark Brindle Boxer. Her name was Haka (Hah-Kah). We got her from a REALLY old lady (named Rose) that could only speak Spanish, so of course the dog could only understand Spanish as well. Since I was a baby at the time, Haka and I learned English together, and as I grew up and learned more so did she. We had Haka for years, she was my sister, and she saved me more then once from PitBull attacks. (In the place where I grew up EVERYONE had a Pitbull, but NO ONE trained theirs). When my mother decided that we had to move out of state, but we couldn't bring Haka, I was heart broken. She was already 14 years old. The morning that she was supposed to be given away a familiar face turned up at our door, it was Haka's original owner. She had found out that we were giving Haka away and came to our door to BEG us to give Haka back to her. While we were talking to Rose we heard a loud crash, and then out of no where Haka came PUMMELING down the hallway (she had broken through the bedroom gate when she heard Rose's voice), she was running so fast it looked as if she wouldn't be able to stop before she crashed into us. But at the very last second she came to a skidding halt, flattened her ears, and dropped to her belly, then slowly crawled towards Rose. Haka's face had such a gentle expression on it, an expression I had never even seen before. She crawled with her tail wagging furiously, and when Rose actually got down on the floor Haka slowly crept into her lap, and started making these high pitched yelping noises while nuzzeling Rose's face. I swear that in those seconds Haka was a puppy again. After all those years, she had actually remembered. My mom started tearing up, and Rose was whispering to Haka in Spanish while hugging/gently petting her. Haka just sat in Rose's lap with her face buried in Rose's neck, still whining. They must have sat there for a good 20 minutes before Rose got up, and hugged us both. Still pleading for us to let her take Haka. Of course we agreed. And when Rose walked out of our house Haka happily followed... until they got to Rose's car. Rose opened the car door and told Haka to get in in Spanish. Haka obviously understood. But refused to move. She looked at me standing in the drive way, and her ears pricked up. Then she looked back at Rose, and walked away from her, coming back to me. -The ultimate sign of her loyalty, and the moment that really tore at me-. My mom whispered "Oh this is just great", sarcastically, and told me to say my goodbyes. When Haka reached me I hugged her and kissed her all over her face, then turned around to walk back into the house. She followed me through the doggie door, and I had to take her back outside. I kneeled beside her, then in a faked excited voice said "Wanna go for a ride honey?!? Wanna go for a ride?!?". Haka got excited in return and ran with me towards Rose's car, then jumped in. I closed the door and reached through the window to hug her one last time and to kiss her on the top of her head like I always did, "I love you Haka." -When Rose drove off Haka looked at me for a second, then jumped into the front seat. It was a bitter sweet moment, but I could tell Haka was excited, and she was happy. Rose called a few years later to tell us that Haka passed away because of old age. She died in Rose's arms, it was painless, and peaceful. Her last years were her best. Subconciously i've always known that one of the reasons why I got LARU the moment I saw her was because she reminds me so much of Haka. Same basic color, same beautifully innocent expression, same reaction everytime she sees me... I'll always miss my sister. <3

So.. what was your first dog's name? What breed was he/she? Any interesting stories? xD

  • My family's almost always taken in stray dogs, so have always had dogs..but my personal first dog was Miley. She was a Great Pyrenees/Black Lab mix. Black with a white chest and white paws, and her paws had little black spots on them, so it looked like dalmation paws. XD My brother got her from a guy who had no time for her. He got her while we were in the process of moving. Once we got settled in I started takig care of Miley. I pretty quickly claimed her as my own. xD
She was a GREAT guard dog. She protected me, and my brother and our other dogs who wouldnt fight back, from our neighbors dog and other things like that many times. Sadly she was hit by a truck, on purpose, 6 days after her puppies (unplanned) were born. There are soo many stories I could tell you about her.
Btw, thats an ADORABLE story Zing!

  • What a beautiful story Zyn.

My family's first dogs were Bear (a Schiperkee) and Murphy ( a German Shepherd/Husky mix).
My father went to work one day, and randomly decided to go to the pet store, and bought Bear. (Note: I do -not- support buying dogs from pet stores >.>) My mom and father decided that he looked exactly like a little bear cub...hence the name. About 6 months (ish) later, my mom was at a friends house and their dog had a litter of adorable little pups, she couldn't refuse Murphy's big brown puppy eyes, and she brought him home. I grew up with both dogs, as though they were my brothers. Bear was an amazing little guard dog, people were more leery (sp?) of him than they were of Murphy.
One day I decided to go sledding and took Murphy outside with me, and its a good thing I did. We walked up through the woods a little ways (it was about 45 minutes before dusk), and found a nice hill to slide on. Murphy would run next to the sled as I went down the hill, then I'd clip a leash to him and connect it to the sled so he could pull me back up. Yep, I'm lazy, lol. We did that a few times, and then as we were nearing the bottom of the hill again, Murphy started walking stiff, raised his tail, and the fur on his back stood up. When my sled came to a stop, he stood in front of me and started growling and looking into the bushes. I had never seen my gentle giant act this way, ever. He started snarling and barking viciously. Out came a small coyote! Murphy gave that coyote fair warning, and when it didn't leave Murphy attacked it! When all was said and done, the coyote got away and ran off, but Murphy was tore up pretty badly. One of his back hindquarters had a big rip in it, and he was of course limping pretty bad. We took him to the vet and he needed a lot of stitches, and had to wear one of those plastic cones (He wasnt impressed with that, lol). He came out of that fine, and lived a pretty long life, until he got stomach cancer that spread all through his body. He was 14 years old when he passed away. Bear also lived long (16 years), he died of cancer as well.

  • @Myst- She was hit ON PURPOSE?? By who?

@RockStar - Eh. Coyotes. They can be sneaky, mean, annoying baztardz. But I admit to "owning" a few (or a pack), which i've some what domesticated. -.- I'm surprised your boy didn't kill it though, especially since he was in protection mode. Bully had a reputation of attacking coyotes, killed them 9 outta 10 times. We'd hear a fight, run outside, and the coyote would just be lying there, gone, along with whatever animal of ours it tried to kill. Isn't it weird how things work out though? You sure are lucky Murphy was there. If the coyote was bold enough to stand and stare instead of turning and running the instant he saw you two, who knows what he could've done to you. I'm sure Murphy was well aware of the danger, and he still fought for you. Dogs are amazing aren't they? <3
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • Yea, the whole coyote standing and staring thing made me wonder if he had rabies or something, thankfully he must not of had it since Murphy didn't end up getting it. I think Murphy might have ended up killing it if it hadn't gotten away like it did. Oh yes! Dogs truly are very amazing. I can't imagine how much life would suck without dogs in the world.

Yeah, coyotes will slip past even the most agile people/dogs. But if one is determined to fight instead of take flight, the result can be disastrous. I've only seen one that was brave enough to take on human and guard dog challenges though, it's the leader of the pack that lives on my land, i'd assume. I've made friends with him, but he's the only coyote that came onto our land that Bully didn't manage to kill. If dogs were never created i'd probably be some kind of psycho cat trainer/competitor.

That disgusts me. Did your family do anything about it, or was she off her leash? I know I would have gone absolutely ballistic.

  • We couldn't do anything but report it..we lived in the country, she was in the kennel with her pups and then we went inside and my sister went to check on um and found Miley by the road. I actually never saw the freak again. D:

  • Haha, alright. You asked. XD

Pookie is actually my first dog, she's a black and white, but over time the black and white has blended into a bit of grey over time. She is a Shih-Tzu. Pookie doesn't really have an interesting or heroic story.. She was my Christmas present about 4 years ago. Heh, they had her locked in my grandfather's room (we have Christmas at my grandmother's house) and they must've been trying to get her to wander into sight, but now that I know her, I assume she was too busy exploring. XD Anyway, but my grandmother accidentally called out, "Common, Sweety!" It was kind of a tone I'd heard her use on dogs before, so I'm like, "Is there a dog in here?" I hadn't guessed my dog, just that maybe someone in the family had brought their dog. She had to cover that quickly, and were like "Oh, no, no, I was just talking to your mom." Which, I belived 100 percent, because my family is weird like that. So I sit back down on the couch, and this little ball of fluff comes barreling down the hallway. She skids to a stop when she see's us all sitting around staring at her, and she was sort of like, "What? Never seen a dog before?" Then she saw me, and honest to god I thought she was somebody else's new puppy, wouldn't have guessed my own. For, I'd been asking for a German Shepherd since I was little, not a Shih-Tzu. How wrong I was, though, because when she saw me, she bounds over and hopped into my lap, and began teething on my hand. -_- Yep, love you too, Pook. At least she kinda chose me over the rest of the family. I suppose once she did "rescue" me from this mole. I was busy throwing her mess into the woods and the mole lumbered out across Pookie's path. The stupid thing walked right in front of her, and she raced over and picked it up in her mouth. I turned around and saw it in her mouth, freaked out, and made her drop it. Luckily the poor thing was just traumatized and a little wet. In other news.. Our lawn hasn't had those mole holes lately.
    FrostBite_zpsab645aba.png
  • Ooh! Ooh! I has had experience with molely moles! O.o They dug up my uncles beautiful lawn like crazy, so he begged me to do something about it and gave me thirty bucks. xD I took a Rat Terrier over there and the moles were gone within two days. Pookies story reminds me of how I got my first cat. I was seven, sitting in my moms bedroom on Christmas eve, and I see from the corner of my eye Santa's arms reaching down to put a cat in the doorway, (only I knew it was actually my mom since the nails on "Santa's" hands were painted). Anyway, I was so excited I started hiccuping. O.o

I love Pookie. Shes so cute. I'm sure if anything ever did happen she'd gladly go running to your rescue. And btw, if you're ever seriously considering getting a GSD in the near (or far) future, i'm a close friend to breeders and competitors of both working and show Shepherds, and I'd be happy to try and get you a dog. : )
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • Haha, 30 bucks, and a dog does all the work! Now that's the life. Honestly, I find moles kind of cute.

Oh, yeah, I'll definitely be getting one.. It's far off, though.. If I get a male.. I'm calling it Mason. XD But if I brought home one now, my stepdad would have a bird. To get Pookie, I guess my mom had to put her foot down, and just told him we were getting a dog, that was final. That'd be awesome, though! There's a kennel a couple hours away that has very nice dogs as well, heard terrific things about them and the dogs. Munster Abbey.. Ever heard of it?
    FrostBite_zpsab645aba.png
  • I've competed against a dog of theirs in Schutzhund, actually. A friend of mine owns a descendant, just as a pet though. I've only seen and heard good things about them as well, so if you manage to get a dog, that would be amazing. I know the owner of Vom Kammer kennels, family owned, but I've met some incredible pet only dogs from them. Then there's Omega kennels. Such a nice owner, and their GSDs were perfect, strong competitors. I know a few more, but wouldn't recommend anything at the moment, as I have yet to see their dogs compete. xD
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • Wow, just looked up Omega and Von Kammer.. I love Omega's dogs, and Von Kammer's males were very nice. Jeez, Munster is definitely the closet kennel.. But still. *Sigh* Decisions, decisions..

Hey, I was playing around with Pook this weekend.. This is what came out of it. XD
<a href="http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd436/Frostbight8/6d541356.mp4"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd4 ... 541356.mp4
    FrostBite_zpsab645aba.png
  • Yeah. I've always been a fan of Omega. Her dog's have given me a run for my money a few times in competition, but she hasn't quite beaten me yet. She sent me an email saying that I was on her 'GOALS' list. xD Beating me is a goal. I didn't know whether to be offended or flattered. : D When it comes to spending money to get a dog for myself, especially a competitor, I will always go for the best... reguardless of whether the dog is close to where I live or not. :p If you aren't paying for the best then what's the point? (My opinion). And one more thing: maybe Munster's dog was having an off week, or maybe they just over estimated the level at which their dog was capable of competing at at the time, but when I watched him compete it was... not quite up to par. The dog did okay, but it wasn't as good as I was expecting considering all of the great things that I had heard prior to the competition. He had little drive, and looked scared, I know he didn't score well in the courage test. If you're looking for a good GSD Munster is perfect, if you're looking for a good Schutzhund dog munster is perfect, but if you're looking for a GREAT competitor I honestly believe you can do a bit better, considering prices. You've never mentioned competing though, so.. I dunno. : ) That vid is cute. Was she jumping over your leg? My arms and legs are the first things my agility dogs are taught to go over, nice jump. xD
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • Ahaha, you are a goal... I think it was a compliment. XD

The thing about distance is.. Omega is in Montana, for me that means flying halfway across the country. XD Little too far. Von Kammer is definitely a considersation, since it's New York. I want a dog that has a nice temperment, and will be sound up until the end, especially when it comes to those hips. I plan to compete with my future dogs.. I've dreamed of competing with Pookie now, but I can't get into any classes. :P But I don't think I'd go towards Schutzhund. Agility is a major interest of mine, and as is Obedience. And that was my leg.. XD
    FrostBite_zpsab645aba.png
  • First dog (that was officially mine): Queen Emme the I Ruler of House, Bed and Yard Combined. (that's her full name)

What can I say about Emme? She is perfect! She was a great little guinea pig of a first dog, and by the rules of agility, you ALWAYS no matter what need to screw up in the beginning. No exceptions. So we thoroughly messed her up, took her to compeat WAY to soon but she lead me from where I was to where I should want to be. Thanks to her we by pure luck met a fabulous trainer at a horrible training facility, which lead me to making some GREAT junior handler friends, and to a top class trainer who has her own lines and many trips and wins at worlds. After seeing her and learning where I wanted to go in my agility career I was able to look at a bunch of trainers and go "Hey, wait a minuet, that trainer over there that I used to hold to such a high slandered, I don't want to be like her. I want to form my own plan, and get known not for having great dogs trained by others methods, but by setting a new slandered and having everybody train by my methods. So basically, Emme has been a MAJOR part of me finding out what I want to be for a trainer, and how I want to make my mark on the agility world.

Also am a person that likes to see results. Emme always gave me results and 95% of the time they were great. If hadn't been so keen on learning then I might not have even continued with dog training.

I see. Well if that's what you're looking for: great health for life, friendly, people and animal friendly sport/competition kind of dog, then Von Kammer is perfect. They are what you need!! xD In my opinion, and based on the dogs I have seen, Kammers dogs are better at low drive, mellow sports, like agility and obedience, as they are more family/fun oriented, rather then work and prey driven. Unlike the other kennel's GSDs. Plus I might be capable of getting pick of the litter for free. xD I enjoy seeing a person get the dog of their dreams. Brings back memories of when I got my first Tosa Inu. : )

  • @ Em - Your story is almost exactly like mine and BULLYs. When I first started competing and training all I knew was that I wanted to do EVERYTHING myself, and that I wanted to create a new training method which only I used for my competitors, so I'd have some sort of upper hand. I tried for years, then finally succeeded, which is how I got my class, and for a year now I have had my reputation in the competing world. I get emails from people asking me not to compete this year, so that they'd have a chance. Ive gotten hate calls from people yelling that I'm selfish for competing in all these sports, and that I need to stick to one because what I'm doing is unfair. Sometimes when I arrive at a competition I hear competitors say crap like "Oh that's just great, SHE'S here." Or "There goes our blue ribbon. Stupid over achiever." -_- I've even had people make assassination attempts on my dogs. Which is when I moved the kennels indoor and got a barbwired fence. -_- But so much more good has happened. Ive been in local commercials to sponsor dogs, and the newspaper. And the joy of competing is worth it all. Besides, I guess its not so bad when I win. xD And dont even get me started on my class! They are my pride and joy. I do what i LOVE, and they pay me for it... its a dream come true! All of this happened from the training of just one guniea pig dog. I hope you get to experience what I have, mostly the good, but some of the weird stuff too. O.o You have to experience it all to really understand. xD I love Em N Em. Shes the first dog I was told about by any of my friends on here. Her and BAM boom BAM. xD

  • Rawr, Zyn, could you please tell the Agility instructors that they're not allowed to have their Beginner classes on Saturdays because Frostbight cannot go then?

I've spent the past hour looking for instructors because you inspired me. -_- There are only 3 in my area! 3! The first one isn't having classes until 2013, the second one is fine, except it starts at 5:30 on Tuesdays, so I can't get a ride. The last one is perfect, except their upcoming beginner class is on Saturdays, and I'd really rather not have my stepdad watch me train my dog. Lets just he.. enjoys critisism (Spelling?), especially when it comes to me.
    FrostBite_zpsab645aba.png
  • I would suggest that you go. Criticism from an untrained man may be annoying, but if its your only chance then go for it Frosty!! Unless.. you'd be willing to put in the time for extensive research. Watch videos, read books... maybe you can train him yourself. : )
