If you could create a breed...

edited January 2012 in General Discussion
If you could create any breed of dog, purely aesthetic and temperament aspects (so ignore possible health issues, because that'd just be a pain in the butt to take into consideration), what would it be?<br><br>Here, let me rephrase that first line a bit: If you were FORCED to create a breed.<br>There.<br>This means no "But xyz breed already exists and they're perfect so there's no need! lol" xD Why am I doing this? Because I know breeds that already exist already exist. This is a theoretical conversation because I'm curious and want to know. I may even doodle up suggested 'breeds'. Because it sound fun, right? 8D Keep in mind, most breeds are a combination of more than two existing breeds, so really have fun with this conversation xD<br><br>This is something I've been thinking of for several months. The goal is the 'perfect family dog'.<br><br>Small Size:<br>Toy Poodle (less shedding, more hypoallergenic, size)<br>King Charles Cavalier Spaniel (Cute, small, very people oriented, easily trained, eager to please)<br>Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever (Loyal, cute, popular, hardy)<br>Border Collie (Super intelligent, many coat/eye colors possible, loyal, hard working, easily trained)<br><br>Large Size:<br>Standard Poodle (Less shedding, more hypoallergenic)<br>Irish Wolfhound (Loyal, large, fearless, protective, gentle)<br>Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever (Loyal, cute, popular, hardy)<br>Border Collie (Super intelligent, many coat/eye colors possible, loyal, hard working, easily trained)

  • I'm not sure if I am reading this correctly or I am just stupid but what excacly are you asking? Did you want people to create a breed from the breeds listed above or any breeds?
  • No no. xD If you could create a breed of your own from any currently existing breeds, what breeds would you use? 8D
    2eldxsm.png
  • Wow, I thought I was the allow person who really worked on this :P Man, since I was little I was creating dog breeds... Ye, guess I had nothing else to do :P Come up with something... XD This is going to get a whole lot of fun :P How many times can you breed with different types? Any? BD
  • As many/anything you want. xD You're clearly not alone. I love musing on stuff like this. 8'D I also want a shiba inu/pomeranian mix because I think it'd be an -adorable- little dog... but that's not really a breed to me. That's just a mutt I really want just -one- of xD

  • <span style="font-size:85">Great Pyrenees/Black Lab mix is the PERFECT guard dog. ;P Their so pretty too! <3 I may think of more later too. xP</span>

  • Lol, I think I'm going to play around with a more of a farm dog idea. Love farm dogs, adorable! XD Was thinking of maybe on the lines of Border Collie X German Shepherd X Greyhound X Labrador. The Border Collie and German Shepherd being easily trainable, herding and guarding dogs. The Greyhound mixed in to higher the speed the dog may be able to go. And the Labrador tohopefully bring in the webbed feet feature and to fatten the dog up from the greyhounds slender body. Thurs, though, I would need to add more breeds into it to make it more ofa 'real' farm dog ^.^
  • Collie needs some Beauceron in that mix ;D
    2eldxsm.png
  • Yes of course! XD Ooo, and maybe a Brittany to make it more of that mediun size? We might as well throw in a concoction of a Aussie and a Collie in with that too! BD
  • I already told you D: i want a smaller version of a Dane xD
    ccf3ec1cafcdf67c83857705ffcc4d77-d5ztjco.gif
  • And some Australian Kelpie too, Collie 8D ALL THE FARM BREEDS. MIX THEM TOGETHER 8D<br><br>and that would be cute, Wheaty. xD I dunno how it'd happen though.
    2eldxsm.png
  • Lets see how we could make a Mini Dane ... Dane, Beagle, Dane, Chihuahua, Dane, Beagle, Dane... XD Jeez, it would take a long time! Ooo, throwing in all the farm dogs sounds like a awesome idea! XD Theres sooo many!

<br>Maybe Min Pin/Great Dane? XD<br>My friend has a German Shepherd/Great Dane and shes HUGE! XD

  • Minpin/dane would probably only get you medium-sized danes. xD HM. I wish there were a computer program I could use to figure this stuff out xD
    2eldxsm.png
  • We should make one! LOL

  • Not a bad idea! But how? :P
  • It'd take way too much knowledge and study. A knowledge of programming, like C++, plus a huge spew of genetic research xD
    2eldxsm.png
  • Nuh, I guess our brains will have to do! Does anyone have one spare? XD
  • Border Collie X Whippet dogs are pretty cute, and also fast, and a little smaller than a standard Border Collie. Also I would try and create that program for you if I wasnt studying, I have basic knowledge of Java and pick it up pretty quickly, and would probs be able to learn C++ if only I had the time,

  • I've been learning C++ between studying genetics, learning Japanese, drawing, and crochet. xD It's not difficult to learn, just takes a lot of memorization.
    2eldxsm.png
  • If I had a clue about that sort of stuff then I would help! But you know, I'm more or less useless -.-
  • <a href="http://www.codecademy.com/"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.codecademy.com/</a>; If you ever wanted to learn coding. ;D It's the site I use. It's super easy. xD But yeah, there are a lot of dog breeds I think would be darned cool to mix, just for physical appearances. Border collie x Catahoula leopard dog, for instance...
    2eldxsm.png
  • O.o Wow, I was thinking the excact same thing! The Border Collie and Catahoula leopard dog would be awesome to play around with XD Thanks forthe link :P
  • I would breed another perfect agility/ sports dog ;) <br><br>I would start with crossing a whippit and greyhound to create a dog that can speed up as fast as the whippit but be able to maintain the endurance of a greyhound and speed of a greyhound. Once that was perfected I add in Pyr Sheps for a smaller size but no lose in speed and a gain in itelegence. Lastly I would add tons of Border Collie in to add agility, intelegnence, the will to please, stamina, and so forth. In the end you would get a to small breed size with longer hair, imence speed, agility, intellegence, and stamina. They would look like: the body of a Whippet, the legs of a Greyhound, the coat, colors, and head of a sports Border Collie (not show), and the ears of a Pyr Shep. Whoo! That was fun :D I have acctually often thought about creating my pwn breed like a mini Border Collie or something. <br><br><br><br>@Weaton- In a perfect world with no health problems you could get a line of dogs and just start breeding them for size, but you would have to inbreed which we know would create dogs with nasty defects. Or if you got enough people together you could all work together on a line f dogs, being careful not to inbreed.

<br><br>To make a mini Dane, I'd start with a Great Dane X Whippet. Seeing as the Greyhound is behind the Dane. How mini is mini? lol Maybe take the Whippet X Dane crosses to themselves a couple times to keep the blocky Dane look. I'm not sure what else I'd use. Maybe eventually downgrading to an Italian Greyhound.

<br>We could make a generator. xD

  • Oddly enough, mastiff x beagle can actually produce a beautiful dog o.O My cousin ended up with a female beagle pregnant by a mastiff (she surprisingly survived the delivery) and the end result was a litter of what look like long haired brindle dogs that resemble border collies with slightly more mastiff-like faces. <br><br>Personally I'd breed a fluffy english mastiff with a great dane to get a slightly leggier, slimmer fluffy mastiff. (I love fluffies XD) <br><br>I'd also like to try tibetan mastiff x irish wolfhound to get a longer haired, heavier wolfhound with some better guardian tendencies. IW's are my favorite breed, but they aren't so good as guard dogs :P The fact that they tend to be gentle giants is part of why I plan on getting one soon, but it would be interesting to see a personal protection wolfhound mix.

  • This isn't for personal/fake breeds, Wetnose. xD This is to make a 'real' breed.
    2eldxsm.png
  • TOTALLY theoretically speaking. (I would never mix these breeds together for any purpose, BUT, maybe in some fantasy world where there is no consequence for anything and where everyone loves each other.)<br><br><span style="font-weight:bold">For a working dog</span>: Cane Corso, game APBT, Presa Canario, Greyhound, and maybe Doberman Pinscher as a filler<br><br>To make a dog approximately:<br><span style="font-size:90"><br>25" at shoulder<br>90 lbs<br>short haired<br>substantial, not snipey, but small-in-jowl muzzle, so it can bite the sleeve without any problem - very little drooling<br>big head like the presa<br>slim but muscular, body type like the european boxer but with a bit less tuck<br>strength (from CC and PC) but quickness, agility, and performance of the APBT and Greyhound<br>reserved in nature like the Presa, highly prey driven like the APBT, friendly like the Greyhound, silly but serious like the Corso<br>with a masculine, streamlined body with cat-like movement<br>not as burly as the cane corso, not as mesomorphic as the presa, not as skinny as the greyhound, not as small as the APBT, and not as slim as the Dobe<br>i don't care about colors. if this were a real mix i'm sure there would be plenty of colors to choose from<br></span><br><span style="font-weight:bold">For a pet</span>: European Great Dane/Cane Corso<br><span style="font-size:90"><br>to make a dog like the cane corso in most ways except BIG like a euro dane<br>still very muscular and able to put on muscle fast <br>sweet, kindly temperament, silly, playful<br>formidable to look at but actually very sweet and accepting of people<br>a true protector from aggressors<br>blue fawn preferably ;)<br>would probably end up looking like a bully kutta in real life. but i'd like it with much more muscle and bigger bone and less dewlap<br></span><br><span style="font-weight:bold">For another pet</span>: Rottweiler/Presa Canario/Kangal<br><span style="font-size:90"><br>Reserved but accepting nature of the Presa<br>Color, chunky, burliness, and that chubby butt of the Rottweiler with the smiling face<br>The size of a true Kangal dog ( 36+ inches )<br></span><br><br><br>That was fun!
"war cry" presas canarios, aryan molossus, and cao.
  • In a theoretical world I may try a Tibetan Mastiff, crossed with maybe a Bernese or a Newfie. The goal being to try to mellow the TM's temperament a bit while keeping the size and general look that I love.
