Betta Breeding ^.^

So I was looking around on the forums and seen everyone elses Betta fish. And decided I need to get my breeding starting back up again. I just bought 1 male and female Halfmoon Dragon plakets <a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7002/6632947757_f445520060_z.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Here(couldn't get a decent pic of the female . And 2 Super Delta black fire male bettas <a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/Israels/photo92-1.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Here and <a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/Israels/photo93-1.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Here, and 1 male and female Dragon Halfmoon <a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7026/6578654493_434df89b7b_z.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Here and <a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7143/6610727275_f34f81c098_z.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Here. They haven't gotten here yet but they should arrive in the mail tomorrow, and the other 4 should be here on Friday. I've been looking for a red dragon female but their all the way in Thailand and I don't feel like importing them -_-. But I may have some red and blue marbles coming, which is 12 total just for the marbles. I'm trying to get my stock up and I have a general idea of what I want.

The single betta I have is being feed Attisions Betta Pro and New Life Spectrum Betta food. I think I'll just put the fish I'm not using for breeding will go in my 10gal tank. I may be able to divided it into 4. But I can't seem to find any beanie baby cases.

Has anyone have experience breeding betta fish or any other type of fish. This is my first time breeding fish, I have a general idea. I know their rabbit breeders on here, any other breeders of any other animals?

  • I know Zagari on here use to breed fish, you should talk to her!

I personally know nothing of fish, but those are some gorgeous bettas.

I have a female English Bulldog who I am breeding in October this year & October 2013 to get 2 females to show in conformation & to keep my line going after she passes - she's my foundation girl.
Then later on I plan to purchase a male.
  • I raise rabbits and sheep if that counts xD And ive had a horse before ;D no fish though. Sorry
  • Hey you guys breed something. And it all takes the same thing, getting good quality animals and reaching for a goal. But I know showing is another thing I want to do. But I don't want to just breed dragons all the time, I might try to go for different colors. But first thing first how did you guys start did you just get a dog/rabbit from a breeder and say I wanna better this animal, and have good quality animals.

  • For me it wasn't an impulse thing (I didn't just go out and buy one), mine started with a LOVE for Great Danes (& still do), I had always wanted to get into breeding animals ever since I was young...probably around 7 years of age. I would capture wild lizards (Green & brown anoles) & breed them to see what kind of babies they would produce but would always end up releasing them LOL.
My love for Bulldogs came around the time I was 15-16, I can't have a large dog like a Great Dane right now, so I started doing research on Bulldogs because they where second on my list I began to do a ton of research on them, I use to go hours researching about Great Danes & then I got an obsession with Bulldogs as well. And a 2 years later I cam across a Bulldog breeder & there was no doubt in my mind that it WASN'T an accident.
I built a close relationship with the breeder & was over at her house daily with my pup.
I knew the time & investment I had to put into my dog & her future litters, you can't really just go out a breed her during their first heat cycle, obviously. :P
I knew I had to wait 2.5 years before breeding her, but it has been well worth it because she is the BEST dog I have ever had & I couldn't live a day of my life without a Bulldog.
I wish I could have shown her, but she wasn't mean for the show ring, however she is VERY high quality I know she will produce the kind of pups I am looking for.
Basically, it was a waiting game for me lol, but I am so glad I didn't jump into anything.
I also in the future want to start a line of mice, but I know right now I do not have the space or time.
Anyways, I'm done rambling on. XD
  • With my sheep, in high school i showed in livestock shows. Couldnt get rid of the girls i showed because i was too attatched. So i bought a ram from the best breeder i could afford (spent 500$ on the sucker much to my dads dismay) and brought him home. Im expencting my first babies in a month or two. Im super excited!!!

With the rabbits, i showed them when i was young. I always sold them afterwards but when i finally came to terms with wanting to be an animal breeder in the future (breeder/handler/trainer. Definitially quality animals!!) and i KNEW my dad wasnt gonna let me get dogs or horses to breed i talked him into rabbits. I know how to handler em, theyre cheap to purchase, cheap to feed, and we have a market for them around here. Again, to his dismay i purchased the BEST stock i could but i tell more people i dont have babies than i do trying to sell em. Ive literally never had a litter for sale longer than two days. In general i usually sell them all in one day. O-o ive sold to livestock shows, breeders, and even shipped some O-o

With the horses, id REALLY like to break into it but both of my girls are REALLY young and im still to the stage where im showing my dad that i can raise and train some epic horses. I kinda... sneakily got my colt truth be told. The breeding to the stud was a present from my best friend so my dad couldnt say no. But he LOVES my colt. My colt acts like he went through boot camp. Its "Yes maam. Whatever you say maam!!" And both of my riding horses while they were already trained on the ground, he's shocked at what ive done with them. My QH was unfinished. She'd run away out from under you in a second. She had two speeds. Fast.. and faster. I spent six months working with slowing her down and making her calm down under saddle. Ive safely up a five year old on this same horse to let him ride around at a walk by himself. With my TB, my dad thought i was absolutely CRAZY for getting her, and like all my other animals, he hated that i got her. I literally had to fight to get her. He thought i was crazy for taking in a two year old ex racerhorse and i truely agreed with him. But i fell in LOVE with this filly when i saw her. She was all i could think about until i brought her home a week later. I spent a month letting her rest, then started groundwork on her and within a week i was riding her around in a halter and a lead rope. Actually, i didnt have a bit or bridle on her for the first month i rode her. She's never run off and she's super calm. Ive got her doing yields now and were working on transitions and im working on getting her ready to show this year.

Whew... i talked a little bit more than you wanted me too but o well ;D

One of my moms friend just got her 3 bulldog puppies for her to breed. But she's not really a "breeder-breeder" more like a backyard breeder. But what she doesn't understand that Bulldogs can have 5-9 puppies (right number?) and everyone can't afford $1,000 money on a dog. But when people get in their minds that they know what their doing. What can you do. I know I researched the Betta's so many times, I kept looking for new information and when I couldn't find anything new I felt like I learned all their is to know. But new information is bound to come.

I didn't know you were breeding sheep to! Do you have a waiting list for your rabbits? Or is it generally first come first serve. I never heard of a rabbit being shipped. I remember wanted a male guinea pig shipped to me and they almost had a heart attack. I also had a faint idea in my head to breed hamsters, Syrian Hamsters. That project will probably come later, if my betta breeding goes well.

  • I attempted to breed betta for a long time and only had one successful spawn in the time that I had my fish. I had quite a few tanks and kept my boys in divided 10 gallons. I kept my girls in two different 20 gallon sororities. I won't claim to be an expert, but what kind of info do you need help with?

You have gorgeous fish! Dragons are my favorite!
  • xD yes! Club lambs. Hampshire/Suffolk cross lambs. Theyre DEFINITALLY a lot of work (a breeder saying goes 'Lambs are born looking for a way to die') as they have to be kept RIGHT at 98 degrees for a few weeks, tails docked, clipped if theyre boys, trimmed (pain in the butt!!) and then they can still choke themselves easily. But wathing their cute little butts hop through a field is sooo worth it. Plus my five year old nephew is a mutton buster (little kids riding sheep at rodeos hahaha!) and he likes my girls. He's terrified of Jack the ram but he loves my girls. My neice is already claiming one of my lambs to show this next year and i EXPECT to have a good market for them. I traveled 4 hours to get each of my girls. With how close i am and the quality iv reached for i my lambs i dont epect to have a problem selling 4 lambs a year (sheep most commonly have twins xD)

With the rabbits, i dont generally get people who are willing to wait for babies unless theyre into the show scene. When i breed for livestock shows its first come first serve and i usually have two or three people a wek call or email to see if i have any available. Like i said, i generally turn down more people that i sell too because i sell my babies so quickly. I had someone looking into coming on a three day trip to pick up an entire litter of 8 once. O-o Sadly i havent had any this year which irks me. My does didnt take for the shows i bred them for because of the heat. Im just waiting until hthey FINALLY produce something because ive got the best batch of does ive ever had right now.

*edit*
My girls
<img src="http://i43.tinypic.com/kbcg48.jpg"; alt="http://i43.tinypic.com/kbcg48.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

Wow, that's horrible. Especially with Bulldogs, it's a breed you have to EXTREMELY careful with because of their health problems & if she got low quality Bullys it will only result in even worse pups.
Bulldogs usually have small litters, but yes, they are capable of having 9 pups.
The breeder I got my dog from had a litter of 9 before, & I hope your friend knows that if the pups are left unattended with mum they can easily be squished to death because mum is so large. They need to be supervised when fed every two hours, my breeder had to take two weeks off from work for her pups & her husband took a week off after her two weeks where up.
Oh, & can't forget artificial insemination & c-section costs.
I like to go to the book store & read on breeding to haha.

  • My family has been working with and breeding quality dogs for almost fifty years now. I've successfully bred my Tosa Inus, the entire litter sold for 4-5k each, last year, and I'm expecting a litter of APBTs this month. All of the puppies have been reserved. I think I have an addiction to getting new dogs. xD I've also bred Bettas, although that was more of a hobby.. and it sure wasn't easy. Not with my fish anyway. I've only been successful twice, and eventually I gave up breeding and just stuck with the fish I had already gotten. I was taught everything I know by my grandparents, who started out with a love for game bred Pitbulls, but decided to breed for conformation instead. I was raised with dogs, met my first dog when I was three days old, trained my first dog at six and competed for the first time at eight. I helped whelp my first litter when I was ten, my grandparents basically raised me for this. :) There is a lot to know, definitely a lot to learn, but breeding Bettas are a good way to learn the business. I know that the feeling you get when you've reached your goal is unlike any other, it's such an amazing, accomplished feeling. You can definitely ask me any questions, I love this topic. :) Your fish are gorgeous. And if you ever get into breeding Syrians I can definitely give you advice on that too, i've bred four litters in the past, and learned a ton.. made my mistakes before I bred the perfect litter, and definitely learned what NOT to do as well.
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD

  • Ive always felt bad for buying from breeders, but it was my dream to compete and I needed the best.. so to cope with the guilt I started fostering and saving lives that way. We've had over 72 fosters over the years.. adopted them all out. xD Plus its a ton of fun and teaches you so much about different dogs and personalities. :)

Ahh, but for you its different. For conformation you need a purebred, registered, unaltered, show dog. With agility, there are tons of dogs that can and love to dog it, and in the process beat the breeders dogs butts. Keep up the good work though, I know tons of people that show and just go eh, those dogs aren't good enough. My friend that shows has a bunch of dogs, unfortunately all from breeders when most just kinda sit there and are lap dogs. Oh well, rant over good job Zing :D

  • True. But I needed certain dogs for other sports as well. Its extremely rare to walk into the pound here and find a dog that was bred to be in the harness/isn't afraid of it, or has the strength to pull thousands of pounds WITHOUT being chemically altered. And there's never any puppies or younger dogs that I can adopt out and just train... although I have always wanted to. Our pound here consists of old dogs and little strays. Anyway, thanks. ;) And I believe I'm done hijacking? xD
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • There is nothing wrong with buying from a breeder.
No matter how many dogs are adopted from shelters there is still going to be more coming in, it's not our fault they are in the shelter.
The fault goes towards the person that PUT the dog in the shelter & those who are irresponsibly breeding.
Not saying I don't love shelter dogs, because I do.
I have a dog from a breeder (an English Bulldog), best dog I have ever had and best dog I probably will ever have.
Will I PERSONALLY ever adopt from a shelter? Probably not, I plan on owning nothing but English Bulldogs from my personal line & one APBT.
Does that make me a bad person? No.
Are people going to get pissed about it? Probably. But I don't care.
A REPUTABLE breeder, breeds for quality not quantity.

/just my two cents.

There's definitely nothing wrong with wanting/buying a dog that meets certain standards, no one here has said there is. Could I get a pure bred Tosa from the pound? BILLION to one chance. I had to buy what I wanted. Of course it doesn't make us bad people. I'm just the type of person with a HUGE "every life is worth the world" kind of state of mind, and the fact that thousands of dogs will go to the pound no matter what I do doesn't stop me from feeling bad that I bought instead of adopted, it's just the way I am. I to got my best dogs from a breeder, in Japan no less! So sometimes i just feel like i'm at fault for a dog or two being put down, although I know that that isn't true. And although my family and I have only rescued 72 so far, it means the world to me. I do care about those shelter dogs, do I care about what people think because I breed/buy from breeders? No. Just like you. Just as long as I'm doing my part to help save dogs I feel like I'm doing enough... how I feel. :)

That's probably the only reason I would buy from a breeder, unless I stat doing conformation. Buying from a responsible breeder isn't bad, buying from a puppy mill/backyard breeder is. I myself was looking at Pyr Shep breeders before getting my Border Collie mix puppy, did I look for a rescue? Ya. Did I find one? NOPE

  • Alright. I've got experience breedings dogs, gerbils, goats, and cows. Now I highly doubt you're going to walk into you're local pound and find a wheaten. You can find them at rescues and such, but I pound is a stretch.

Now personally I prefer my breeder animals. I know what I'm getting as opposed to getting a shelter animal I'll know nothing about. I had the chance to get my first two goats from a rescue, I turned them down, after finding out that I was getting the health testing on the rescues. I found out after purchasing my goats from a breeder the goats I was going to rescue have cae, which is a genetic and deadly disease. I'm glad I choice to spend the money. I got to see my purchased goats line. My goats can be registered when the rescues could not have been registered.

This pissed me off. We just had two litters of puppies evaluated. There are 16 puppies down stairs. 7 from one litter and 9 from another (The litter of 9 is actually 11 but 2 have gone home already). Both of Erin's female puppies have show homes, and now two of her boys have show homes. Faith has a boy and girl going to show homes. That leaves 10 that are going to pet homes. One lady already expressed interest in some of the other event they can have the dog participate in. We have about 5 puppies going to families with kids, where the dog is the child's companion, a playmate, a friend.

We had a pure wheaten at our shelter called Benji. He was owned by a lady who got arrested, her friend was supposed to take care of him. Long story short, the friend dumped him, animal control picked him up, we adopted him out, then the original owner showed up after she saw him on our *edited by staff* page. Sucky for her, but the dog got a great home and she was fine with it.
