Getting a new puppy!!

Hiya, everyone! I know that not a lot.. well.. none of you know me, but I'd like to change that. My name is Indiana(Not real name) and I have 2 dogs, 2 cats and a leopard gecko. I go to high school, and i live on the west coast. I love animals, and I plan on being a vet when I graduate. My favorite animals are dogs and horses.
On another note, I've been planning on getting an akita puppy for a LONG time. My parents agreed if I keep my grades up, and save up the money on my own, and pay for all his expenses (besides emergency vet visits and all that) that I can get one. I've contacted my local breeder and he is expected around June-July. He will be either silver tip or dark fawn and his name will be Bentley. I want to show him in conformation and dock diving. DO any of you that do these have any advice for me, and what are normal costs? I'll put up pictures of his parents and some of their past litters.
Also, I'd like to get to know everyone elses animals and what not. Feel free to post pictures of your own pets and stories, I love reading them!

Thank you!

  • Well... I'm always up to meet someone new. :) You definitely would have come across me here anyway. I'm Zyndalee, yeah I know it's unusual. Everyone calls me something else though, either LaLa (one of my dogs), Zynny, Zyn, Super Z, LeeLee to the one's that are really close to me... you get my point though, eh? :) I let friends call me whatever. I breed, train, and compete dogs... in RL. I currently own fifteen dogs and about 32 animals all together. I like helping out, making threads about the crazy things that seem to happen to me daily (because bad luck adores me for some reason). xD I'm very friendly, I'm good for conversation, and I talk a lot. Point blank. I do. Everyone knows it, I know it, its not going to change. xD I currently compete my dogs in weight pulling, schutzhund, agility, conformation, and obedience (only mentioning the sports I participate in OFTEN). Although I have experience in almost all sports and can usually answer any questions. Don't be afraid to ask them. :) I'm sure you'll find our little Vp community am az ing. And once you get to know everyone the forums become addicting. You'll learn totally random things about people that their 'in person' friends might not even know, and making friends will become so easy. Ive never really had any "bad" forum experiences, they're mainly awesomely fun. xD This is a good place to ask for advice, and share what you know to those that are asking. There are definitely some smart people here. :) Anyway, I love Akitas, so gorgeous. As an experienced handler I can tell you now that competing isn't cheap, and its definitely not for everyone... but I guess that's why you have to try it and see, right? ;) I feel like this post is getting to long but if you pm me I can answer any questions. :p You can find my pet thread in this topic a little ways down, its title starts with my dogs name LARU. I cant wait to see the pictures! And welcome to the forums! :)
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • If you are looking to do conformation with him he can not be neutered and you should look up the standard Akita inu,if not judges make ask you to leave the ring,Pm if I missed stuff(oh I own 5 USA champions and one of my dogs is a USA Canadian and English champion in conformation

  • Not all dogs will do well in conformation shows, and really the only point in showing in conformation is if you plan to breed. Have you discussed what you plan to do with the pup with the breeder? Many breeders mostly just sell on a pet contract where the animal most be spayed/neutered, so you have to make it clear to the breeder you want a show potential puppy on a show contract. Also, be forewarned that showing in conformation can be very expensive, and to enter most shows you need to join a kennel club and pay kennel club dues. I'm guessing American Akita by the colors you mentioned? Do you have any experience with Akitas, or other large guardian breeds? They can be very difficult to handle if you aren't used to their type... very territorial by instinct, independent, and they don't tend to get along with other dogs well. If you plan to show, depending on the temperament of your pup, your dog may need professional training. Akitas are pretty much known for not following their owners commands, and when showing you're going to want an extremely obedient dog. Also, they tend to have a high prey drive, so unless your breeder has cats around to socialize the pups with you're going to want to be very careful introducing the pup to your cats, and may want to keep them apart when you aren't around. They can be a bit weird with strangers, again, early socialization is key. Do you own your own home or rent? Some insurance companies may cancel your policy over a dog that's considered a "dangerous breed" such as an Akita, and some landlords won't allow them. Best to check before it becomes an issue.

Good luck on your pup, and feel free to ask any questions :) I don't show yet, but I plan on getting a show potential Wolfhound soon, and I have family/friends who breed and show various breeds.
