Are You Kidding Me?!

edited January 2012 in Vent
My boyfriend and I have been working on the fence that my female dogs are in due to them escaping and that caused three of the four to get pregnant (we do not have the money or time to get the fixed because it is really expensive and the nearest vet is almost two hours from where I live). We FINALLY got it fixed after working for almost a week and today when we get back to my house we discover that the females were not out, but the stray male had gotten IN! The electric fence is brand freaking new and works EXTREMELY well (ask my foot that got zapped as I was testing it with a meter). We got him out and a few minutes later I walked outside only to see him jump clear over our six feet fence. It has electric wire across the top and the bottom, so there is nothing left to do but call the pound. I feel real awful about it because when I took Jake for her daily walk he followed us (and I know why........) but when I sat down to take a break and give Jake water, he came close to me but would not let me pet him. He sat down and watched me pet Jake. I started talking to him and said "I know you do not know what it is liked to feel loved or get touched and praised, but if you come close to me I can show you," and he crawled to me and let me pet him. He was still scared and has his tail tucked, but he let me pet him. Sadly, as soon as I stood up he ran. I know if we get the animal control involved that he will not be adopted because he is at least four years old, he is not socialized nor people friendly, and he has awful looking teeth. Over all he is a cute dog and I feel bad for him because he is long haired, but under all of his fluff is skin and bones. We are not allowed to feed him because my parents to not want him sticking around with our females but at the same time I want to get him sociable before we call anyone so he has a better chance.

  • Some type of mix. I got tired of him fighting with my dog because he continuously got into the fence with them last night and tried to "rape" her. She wants nothing to do with him so he attacks her. I FINALLY brought her inside at 2:30 this morning. She was shaking and whining.... And when I got inside I saw why; he had bitten her face and she was dropping with blood. I had just wanted to get her out of the fence and it was REALLY dark and cold, so I over looked it thinking it was drool outside. But we were both covered in her blood by the time I got her inside. I mean he stayed outside my upstairs window and whined ALL night and he has even showed his little Chihuahua mix friend to our house. The little one showed up around seven last night but went into the woods behind my house so I thought he was gone, but when I woke up this morning they BOTH were on my back porch. I really do not want to call the pound on Charger (the big dog) but I might not have a choice. We can not afford to support anymore of his kids and my parents have already said if he does not leave we will get rid of all of our females including my Jake.

  • And he really is not that big in my opinion. I was shocked that he cleared the fence to begin with because of his size.

  • I will take a picture of him and his little buddy today and post them to see what breeds people can come up with, but they probably will not be close ups because they are still scared of people and I do not want to lure them with Jake after what happened.

  • Eh.. something like this happened to me. An aggressive Pitbull mix got into my yard, ripped open a huge bag of brand new dog food, and tried to mount one of my females, who screamed bloody murder and alerted me to what was going on. Sadly three of my males found the stray dog before I did and made quick work of him, even the nicest dog is capable of attack when they're protecting their territory, females, food, and owner. When I got out there I called my boys off the stray and called animal control, who eventually came and took the stray's body. I felt terrible and terrified that a dog could get over my seven foot fence. You have to be careful, and you have to call animal control, reguardless of whether you feel bad. Its your dog, or the stray. You cant be risking your animals for a stray that's just causing trouble and helping to increase the population of unwanted puppies/possibly spread diseases. If I was in your situation no way would I have let any of my girls stay outside with the stray for that long an amount of time. The first pregnancy shouldn't have happened in the first place. I know you might feel an attachment, but its the best thing to do, and by the way you described him I'm sure the stray is miserable anyway.
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • You should get your females to a vet if any stray male dog has had any sort of "intimate" interaction with them... there are stds that dogs can get that are highly contagious and can be dangerous... one can make the dog unable to breed, basically causing the litter to die in utero, and another can cause tumors like hpv. If you don't have money to get them fixed then maybe you should just keep them inside, because they're likely to come by more injuries from forced matings... If the male is bigger and aggressive the injuries could be pretty severe. It's also probably better to get animal control involved sooner rather than later, because leaving him to run around isn't doing anyone any good, him included. Most shelters will at least try to work with an otherwise adoptable dog that's timid, but if he gets sick or injured from being a stray that will cut down on his chances even more. Plus, if he injures your dog enough that you have to take her to the vet he'll more than likely be considered a dangerous dog, and that could get him put down.

  • We do not have the money to take all of our females to the vet. If we did they would be fixed to begin with.

  • That is why I suggested taking them inside. If you can't keep them inside and can't afford get them fixed, perhaps rehoming them would be for the best.

  • You definitely have to call animal control. I would've called as soon as the dogs showed up at my house if my females weren't spayed. Didn't it cost more to take care of the puppies than to have your female spayed? That was always my concern when deciding to spay or not spay my dogs (however not spaying them was never really an option anyway; I always scraped up enough money to have them done in the end).
  • We have tried to do get them spayed and we always end up having something come up.<br>When he first showed up we thought he was the farmers from behind us because he has Chow mixes that look like him, but they are females and he is DEFIANTLY a male. I have decided to try to catch him on our porch and call the no kill shelter. We are calling them to see if they have an opening tomorrow because they have so little space. I would rather wait it out for them to get an opening (which they have them a lot around this time) and give him to them than have to worry about him getting killed. I would have a guilty heart if the pound gets involved.

  • I have a question. Why were your females outside, unsupervised, with a broken fence while they were in heat?
    liglw.jpg
  • The fence was not technically broken, we were adding to it and we were with them the entire time. We added on to it and then took down the older fence, so they never had a broken fence to begin with.

  • They were escaping through a hole and we ended up finding it, but when that my boyfriend and I were "fixing" it I intended that we were adding on
