Dog Tricks

I've been a training fool lately! I need trick ideas! Just last night I taught both Emily and Bayleigh to play dead, although we don't have the hand signal down yet. So, bring on the suggestions!

Emily already knows:
Sit
Down
Stay
Sit Up aka Beg
Crawl
Roll Over
Speak
Flip a treat off her nose and catch it
Bang aka Play Dead

Bayleigh already knows:
Sit
Down
Stay
Sit Up aka Beg
Crawl
Roll Over
Speak
Bang aka Play Dead
Shake

Kaiser already knows:
Sit
Down
Stay
Roll Over
Shake
Crawl

I know I forgot some... Kaiser is old and it's difficult for him to do certain things so I just let him be a lazy pet most of the time. Bayleigh is overly enthusiastic about food so she's super easy to train. Her and Em pick things up really quickly.

  • Wow! There are a lot of ideas, thanks. I've been watching clicker training videos on [Edited by staff; not a child appropriate site] all morning. I've had dogs my whole life but Emily is my first success story. The the most well trained dog I've ever had the pleasure to own. I only hope that each new dog gets better and better. Bayleigh is almost 9 months now so we've got a long way to go.

I worked on getting Em to turn on the light switch this morning. We only worked for about half an hour and she did i twice. Not the one connected to the wall, but one that was in my hand.
  • One of Laru's tricks that always seems to be a crowd pleaser is dance. I'll have her sit in front of me to start, she knows almost 42 tricks, but this is the one that anyone actually shows a reaction to.. after were done with each trick I yell "Now get up and dance!". And she'll jump up onto her hind legs and do a little freestyle for a few seconds. Its hilarious and a perfect ending to whatever routine you have. Its also extremely easy to teach a dog to dance anyway. xD Other then this my favorite trick would have to be "Go get the...". Because I'm lazy and I like when my dogs get things for me. :D Good luck! You're the first person i've met that owns APBTs and ACTUALLY trains them. O.o I thought I was the only one for a bit.
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD
  • Well, that comment makes me sad. I know many responsible APBT owners who train there dogs and actually do stuff with them.
While there are a lot, I wish there were more of us out there.

If you start of with the basics it makes it much easier. Things like putting you right/left back/front paw on a sticky note, or being able to target some duct tape with her nose. Then if you wanted to teach cross your paws, you would just say you command for touching the sticky note with her right foot while she is laying down and the sticky note is on her left. Plus it makes it easier to do commercial work if you plan to do do that (which is a lot of fun).

  • Em I was talking about the supposedly "serious" APBT owners. 0.0

And just one more thing I wanted to add: Every dog that ive ever trained has learned to come to me immediately at the sound of my whistle. I've taught them the extreme importance of bounding to me when they hear it, no matter what they're doing or how far away they are. The whistle is good in situations where your voice may not be loud enough. When your dog hears it shes supposed to immediately recognize it as something she must stop, then respond to. I guess I stress this training so much because a few years ago one of our best dogs was accidentally let out, and I guess that he got caught up in the moment, because he went racing after this huge 18 wheeler, and he never chased a car or truck before in his life. My first reaction was to call him but I wasn't nearly loud enough. I simply whistled and he stopped in his tracks, turned around, and came running back with his ears back and his belly to the ground. Not everyone cares for this training, but everyone and every dog will make their mistakes no matter who they are, being prepared is good, and it makes me feel like I have control at all times knowing that all I have to do is whistle and the dog will be fine no matter where we are. :) Sorry for the ramble...

  • I think ALL dogs need training not just pitbulls. My grandmothers toy poodle is the meanest dog ever and she just thinks it is "cute" Dogs need to learn what they need to do and not to do.
  • Try some agility training or search and find. My dog Jake loves it.
