Pet Memorial Gift Ideas

edited November 2011 in General Discussion
My friend lost her dog to cancer a few days ago. With Christmas coming up, I'd love to give her a memorial gift about her beloved Shay. I'm coming up blank. Any ideas?

  • You could do something personalized, like an ornament or something of that nature. <a href="http://compare.ebay.com/like/200680033655?var=lv<yp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Engraved Ornament</a>. <a href="http://www.perfectmemorials.com/paw-trail-heart-porcelain-pet-memorial-ornament-p-10692.html?utm_source=googleproducts&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=products&gclid=CInrgv7L2qwCFQfd4AodL2_rFA"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Photo</a>. <a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/Memorial-Photo-Frame-Ornament-Christmas-Memory-Holiday-Decor-MALE-/330630237820#vi-content"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Photo Frame</a>. The photo frame one is designed for people, but it would work just as well for a dog.<br><br>You could also do boxes or jewelry containers with the dogs picture on it. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Cottage-Garden-Pet-Bereavement-Treasure/dp/B003NYFPEQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1322526285&sr=8-3"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Like this</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Classic-Products-Keepsake-Memorial-Mahogany/dp/B000MWYIAO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1322526285&sr=8-2"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">this</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Pet-Memorial-Photo-Sentiment-Keepsake/dp/B0039SPZG4/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1322526285&sr=8-11"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">or this</a>.<br><br>I also like the jewelry/pendants you can get custom made. Some have just the name and some offer an engraving of the animal or just a picture. Walmart offers a lot of those if you go in store, not sure if they do it online. This <a href="http://www.whisperintheheart.com/personal.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">place</a> offers a couple different designs and options.<br><br>There's also the places who will turn a photograph into a throw or blanket. Perhaps I'm remembering wrong, but I do believe Petco or Petsmart offers that service. It might just be select stores though. You also have artists who would be willing to draw a portrait (in almost any size). You'll find them advertising a lot on local ad sites (i.e., CL) or sometimes in the paper. You could also do a search for either in your area or just in general.<br><br>If none of those options sounds appealing or works, you could always look into donating to a pet cancer research fund or an animal organization, and then show her the receipt or whatever comes with the donation. They usually have an option for "In Memory Of" or "In Honor Of". It helps other pets and it does make a nice gift. :)

    On an indefinite hiatus.
  • Thanks Ana! Those are great ideas. I was originally thinking about a little photo frame or something but now I'd really like to get her, maybe a portrait. I'm still thinking of ideas though.
  • Well, depending on how much you want to spend, you could either make or buy a wooden box and she could place the dogs toys and collars, etc. in it and in the top when you open it could be your friends favorite picture of the dog and maybe even her/his name ingraved in it. Thats what I want to do for my 2 dogs that died sometime.

  • Depending on the size of the dog you could make his/her collar/leash into a bracelet she could wear. I took the first collar my puppy got and didnt even need to do anything to it just strap it on my wrist and I wear it every where.

  • For my pets i have a necklace. Its a simple silver link necklace and i put a dogtag with Eins name on it. His dogtag was gold capped on one side so it looks like a simple charm but if people ask me what it is i can turn it over and show them his name and info on the back of it. Its simple and pretty, plus i have a habit of holding onto it when i miss him. For the few months after he died i would talk to him through it and it makes me feel better because he's always that close to my heart through the tag. Always hanging right over it so he knows ill never forget him.

  • Plus ive decided im taking Scouts tag when she goes and putting it on there with his. Soo its not just a certain pets memoriable. The chain is for all the animals i know ill love and lose in my life. Any animal super close is going on the chain. So ill never forget any of them and theyll always be with me.

<br><br>This is a fabulous idea! I have DJ's tags on his collar and they're sitting on a shelf in my room. However, I have one of his old tags so I am now going to use this idea for that one. Thanks!
  • xD glad you like it. I just knew after Ein was gone i needed something... something i could keep close and would never go out of style.
  • Vampy I believe I'm jacking your idea for Homie, Heaven, Faythe, and Zane xD
  • Haha! Maybe i shoulda patented the idea lol!!<br><br>Garn youv'e seen my chain haven't you? I wore it the last few months of school after we had to put Ein down.
  • Mhmm I was always twisting it around so it was sitting right =) it's beautiful and i remember seeing you absent mindedly holding it in class while we were doing a paper or something <3
