Wow.. Just wow.. (Horse VPiers beware -_-)

How ignorant can one person be... I was at my brothers house today helping his neighbors daughter (lets call her Kelli) to ride horses. Kelli wants to be a barrel racer and I told her that for that, she needs a good horse, and a good trainer for both her horse and herself. Which that someone isn't me. Well my sister in law texted me saying that Kelli just needs someone that has patience and knows what they are doing the "proper" way. So I agreed and went over there this morning to get used to working with this particular horse that Kelli rides. So I was in the pasture with Comanche (Kelli's horse) and her mothers boyfriend comes over and is like "So you ride huh?" and I just stated that I had been in a saddle since the day i could walk probably before that since my grandfather used to hold me while he rode. I was basically raised in the saddle even though I dont talk about it much and hardly ride since my grandfather had his stroke about 5 years ago. Riding is just hard for me after that.. It's not the same.. It just depresses me and makes me miss him teaching me.. Anyways he then stated that he too grew up around horses.. This is his "Horse Knowledge".. Let's see how many of you guys want to just smack him and walk away as bad as i wanted to -_-

Vampy, I THINK you remember "Steven's" neighbor "Chance"? Well his mom has a "Horse Genius" for a boyfriend. The four horses I told you about that look TERRIBLE and WAY malnourished?

Anyways..

#1: He says you have to have FIFTY-EIGHT acres of land to train a barrel horse -_-
#2: He says that in order to worm a horse. You have to tie them up with no food OR water for at LEAST two days to "clean out their system"
#3: He has them in a pasture with NO grass at all and feeds them ONCE a day. ONE bucket of feed for FOUR horses.
#4: He won't move the fence or block parts off. He insists on making it bigger and bigger.. So that the grass from the original spot doesn't even have time to grow back..
#5: He INSISTS on RUNNING the horse EVERY time he's on him. NEVER walks them.
#6: His horses ALL have cuts or wounds on them.
#7: He INSISTS on riding with one rein in each hand and his hands up to his chest to make the horse "keep his head up" because its "proper"
#8: Hes afraid of his OWN HORSES! I had to be the one to catch Comanche today cause when Comanche threw his head in the air when Kris grabbed for his lead rope. Kris nearly feel from jumping back so fast. I had to be the one to grab hold of Comanche's lead rope.. Which brings us to number 9.
#9: He NEVER takes the lead ropes off. When he puts them up at night. He just walks them into the field and drops the ropes leaving them to stumble and trip on them all night.
#10: He ran those horses for a good three hours non stop yesterday and DIDN'T cool them off or even brush them. He just returned them to the field and went inside.
#11: When he wants to catch one. If it runs passed him, he grabs its tail and pulls backwards and basically follows behind the horse and pulls its tail to try and stop it... I seriously stood in the field with my sister in law muttering "I hope Rain kicks him..." over and over.. -_-
and finally..
#12 the one i find most ignorant: He decided today that the ONLY way to catch a thousand pound horse was to corner her leaving her with two options. Allow herself to be caught or run THROUGH us to get away... He had my brother go to her right, he went left, and expectde me to go in the middle.. I'm NOT that stupid -_- I left plenty of room for her to run between the three of us if she chose option number 2. No way am I going to get trampled by a thousand pound animal because of his non educated ideas -_-

Cootos to those that actually read that! lol

  • This is horrible! I am a barrel racer and none of this crap is true! Barrel racing takes someone willing to learn with either a horse to teach her or a person to help teach her. Yes you need a good horse for barrels, but its not about the breeding and junk, even though basically every horse I ride has famous bloodlines. Its about if the horse WANTS to do it. Have you ever barrel raced? It will take ALOT of time to teach her if you do it correctly. So this is her moms boyfriend saying all this junk?

  • Yea its her moms boyfriend saying that. I just walked away without even replying -_- it was SO dumb.. i didnt even TRY to correct all his mistakes at that one time.. i was just "wow..." ive never professionally barrel raced haha but ive done it before. when i was little. Like i said i was raised in a saddle at my grandparents. They have two eyed jack and grey badger lines and stuff like that (mostly TEJ though) and they have a 7 year state champion barrel horse (shes about 23 now) and a 3 year state cutting horse champion. i was originally taught to ride on the barrel racer and grandpa taught me everything he knew about barrel racing and had me working on it every weekend. Then he moved me to Fred (the cutting horse) cause he was bigger and faster and more "advanced" than popcorn (the barrel horse) and he wanted me to get used to being put on any horse haha. so yea i cn barrel race, i just never have. as i said ive barely been on a horse in the passed 5 years after my grandfathers stroke =/

Yea i know its not all about bloodlines i ment a "good horse"as in one that is right for her and is right for the arena. one that will suit her needs and do wel for her and one that they work well together haha its not al about linage and stuff in the rodeo world haha. i told her she needs someone that knows what they are doing better than i do because i havent messed with barrel stuff in over 5 years. i cant teach her everything she needs to know. she needs someone that knows what they are doing better than i do and that can work with her every day, where as i cant haha
  • Wooow. Sounds like someones gonna get hurt in the near future.
  • I know right! I SO wanted Rain to kick him when he grabbed her by the tail! She was already running from him when he first stepped into the pasture!
  • Is he stupid or is he stupid? Honestly it's called coomon sence! Why would you starve your horse? Oveously you shouldtake the lead off! You can't tell me that one of his horses hasn't broke it's leg yet!

(I just want to note that I'm not a horse expert, but I do ride when ever I can and I do have common sence)

  • Wow... just wow. My eyes widened like a yard out when I was reading this. That is just asking to be put in a hospital, and to get in some serious trouble. O.O
  • I have to admit the leaving a rope of a horse isnt all that bad. Its a training technique. I wouldnt START by putting it in a smaller pen first but its how i trained my colt to give to pressure on his halter. I put him in a stall with a rope soo he'd get used to dragging it, and also if he steps on it he HAS to give into the pressure on the halter to get himself free. Then i put him in a run, then a pasture for about a week until i felt he knew enough.
  • Who on earth would starve their horse because it has worms? you wouldnt starrve a cat or a dog or a child if they had worms, im sure theres medication for horses that treat worms (i dont ride horses, dont own horses, but when i was younger i rode a little bit, so no expert), plus who grabs a horse by its tail? I remember when i was younger the first thing they said to us at the stables was "Never approach a horse from behind" and i personally know a girl who lost an eye because she did just that

  • That is all total horse crap. I am literally in the same boat as you are in whe it comes to how I learned and everything. My grandfather taught me everything I know and I do most of the events that he did, plus some because he didn't ride English. My Appy was used as a game horse, so I did not have to train her for what I needed her to do, but I did have to trian Classy and Sunny. I am also rebreaking on of my horses named Doc who we got after he was left as a colt, tangled in barb wire. His ankle took forever to heal, but it is now ok for me to start riding him.

I hate to say it, but I hope that one of those horses teach the man a lesson. I don't want it to harm him, but a good kick tha just grazes his body wouldn't kill him. That is how my father learned how to properly treat a horse. He would always bug my horses just playing around, but you should NEVER horse play with a horse lolz. So one day Dream just grazed him wih her back hoof and he has never done it since.

  • Exactly guys!! I was so shocked I couldn't even fuss I Just walked away and went to talk to my sister in law. My grandmother has a horse ranch and she feeds her horses worm medicine mixed WITH their feed. Like I said I wanted rain to kick him so bad! They have had the cops and animal control called on them three times. My brother felt bad for the horses and told Kris to build a pen in his backyard and put the horses there so they would have grass.. he never even trims their hooves :( it breaks my heart..
  • Did you just walk/trot or gallop around the barrels? 0_o lol. One of my friends and his dad taught me from when I was born basically and I had always wanted to barrel race so I mostly taught myself with help from them. I am also training horses for it. I LOVE hard horses so it made it more fun that I was training a green horse for barrels. <3 her!

  • My soul just died a little reading that. It's terrible! It seems like common sense. what an idiot!
Sounds to me like he's igornant and just plain stupid.
That could (and probably does) qualify as animal abuse or/and neglect. Even if he's trying to be 'professional' that's not even ethical! Running a horse like that is just an accident waiting to happen and the horse would probably be permanently lame. His 'techniques' are ridiculous and dangerous. I train horses, and my trainer is pretty well known around my parts, if I ever saw anyone at my barn or at my trainer's barn do anything like that, they'd be kicked out and asked to never return.
Those poor horses most likely have mental scars and are going to be terrified of people >.<
Poor babies ):

  • The animal control that was contacted did not find any of this out of conduct/not meeting standerds or even tell him to make changes to the things that did not do so and then have a random check-in to make sure he is taking care of the animals?
The animal control in my city/county are required to atleast do that when they find even one violation to our city/county standerds. There is this teenager down my road who hates my family because we called the cops on him for trespassing on our property and drinking, smoking, and doing drugs in our woods, so to get us back he called the animal control when he saw our dog died (she died from digging in an ant bed and having a servere allergic reaction). My mom was picking my siblings up from school, so we found her when we all got home, and burried her that night when my step-dad got home because no one was big strong enough to dig a big/deep enough hole for her. Well when the animal control man came out, that is what we told him, and they still had to do the random check-ins on ALL of our animals. They finally told us that the boy was the ne who called for "improper" treatment to a dead animal. Which a load of crap and they saw that.

    Here have a band-aid
  • I agree coast! Those horses hooves haven't even been trimmed!! and one runs with a bad leg in the back he kinda.. drags it almost.. i loved on each one of them when i was in the pasture and snuck them all some oats later that afternoon =(

Yea Cher, when they went out the first time, they told him what all to do. They came back about a week later and he had them at my brothers house and saw they were fattening up (barely) and said that was a good start and to get busy on doing the other things quicker. they are due to stop by again saturday =( I hope they take them for the horses sake..
  • Yeah and if not, you might want to call them a tell them what is going on. The more complaints they get, the more likely that the horses will be taken.
