Parvo outbreak

edited October 2011 in Vent
There's a serious parvo outbreak around my area (a large area, actually). Specifically close to my neighborhood. My good friend's puppy recently died due to it.

I'm extremely scared for my own puppy, Czar. He's 3 months, 2 weeks and getting his last shots on the 20th.. it was the earliest we could get him into the vet!

Any precautions I should know about to make sure he stays healthy and parvo-free? I'm seriously concerned.

 • I dont know about where you live, BUT where I'm at, we have a local feed store and they sell parvo shots. They keep them refrigerated and tell you to take them straight home and keep them cold. You can give it to your puppy. Its the same thing vet's use just a heck of a lot cheaper. That's what we did for my pittie. I would definitely check into that and see if anyone near you sells parvo shots.
 • also another thing (my sister in law told me) when they get parvo they get restless, vomit a clear foamy liquid, and wont eat or drink. They usually die from dehydration so.. if the lil guy stops drinking for long periods. MAKE him. (not sure if its TRUE but thats what she said and she had a puppy die from it about a year ago and she said that's what the vet told her)
 • Thank you, Garnet. He's acting normal and eating and drinking regularily right now, whilst playing and relieving as normal. So far he's fine.
I heard there's shots at the shoppers d-rug store here for around $30 but I don't think there's anyone I trust doing his shots...
 • Do it yourself 0.0 My dad did Faythes. You just pinch he skin at the base of their neck. The shot will have a paper for instructions inside it (or should. ours did) and it will tell you where you can give it to them and what to do. I know you can put it in at the base of their neck or on their hind leg. I dont remember the third spot though =/ ours was annual so we dont have to buy another till next year. When i called the vet asking about faythe (she started throwing up clear liquid) she told me to go to the feed store and ask about a shot there and that she could either have parvo, worms, or just be car sick (from driving 6 hours home form Arkansas with it being only her second time in a vehicle in her whole life) it was worms btw. We got her worming medicine from the feed store too and it cleared right up =) $30 is a heck of a lot cheaper than the vet doing it 0.0 i asked how much the parvo shot would be and they said no less than $130 and we got one at the feed store that the vet tech told us about (secretly xD) for around $7. (we still got the rest of her shots when my boyfriend got paid again though)
 • Keep him indoors for the most part, don't let him play where lots of other dogs are, and kill any/all flies, my best advice (besides the shot bit mentioned earlier xD)

 • Are some dogs immune to parvo? 0.0 My akita zane was in the same kennel as his brother shadow. Shadow got it and it killed him within a day (died over night and we did everything we could for him. =/) but zane never showed the signs and was playful and happy as ever.. he never got it but his brother did and they played together ALL the time and were kept in the same kennel and slept in the same dog house while shadow was sick (before we caught it).. we cant figure out how zane didnt get it and shadow did 0.0 im thankful that they both didnt pass away but... i just dont see how its so contagious and only one got it 0.0
 • I agree with Kazuko, keep him indoors and when you take him out to potty, etc. don't let him eat anything that's on the ground. Parvo is transmitted through the feces of infected animals, and can be carried by animals other that dogs (foxes for example). Also, if you step in dog feces, or anything like that, clean with bleach, it'll kill the virus. If he does start showing any symptoms take him to the vet asap, because in addition to the danger of dehydration Garnet mentioned parvo also weakens the intestinal lining. That allows bacteria to leak into the bloodstream, so there's a risk of things like sepsis and shock, both of which are extremely dangerous.

Did you ever get Zane tested? He could have been a carrier but not showing symptoms. There's always a chance that he didn't consume any of the infected soil/feces that Shadow did.

 • Yea we took him to the vet when my boyfriend got paid and had him checked and all his shots and stuff and they said he was perfectly fine and healthy 0.0 I just dont see how one got it and the other didnt ya know? I guess it will always be a mystery D=
 • I would go to the drug store and pick up a thermometer (the smallest you can find because he is tiny) and if he starts showing signs the his temp along with bringing him to the vet. Get a baby syringe or two from a store like Rite Ade or Walmart and force feed him water if he won't drink. Make a copy of all his vet papers and put one in each of your cars and in a safe spot at your house. It might be better if you gave him the shot at home because there could be undead germs at the vet that he could catch. You might want to consider cutting down spending to because parvo can get VERY expensive very quickly. Or even thing about dog insurance that covers parvo. Don't go near any other dogs whether you know them or not. Pray... (just curious is the outbreak in Pennsylvania or Texas, because that's were my puppies came from and they got sick and we weren't sure if it was parvo or not.)

 • I haven't heard of any outbreaks here in Texas lately so I think you're safe there <3
 • No, I'm in Canada actually.
I do understand about buying the shots at the store but.. I would not be able to give him the shots myself. Neither would my mom or dad and I don't think we know any friends that have done it before or would be able to do it for us. He'll also be getting other shots at the vet too so I think it's best just to wait it out.

Thank you for all of the advice!

Before I knew about the parvo outbreak I was already being cautious. I never let him eat anything while he's outside and I often wait to get home to let him go potty instead of wherever we are (in town, etc.) I also don't let him near any other dog feces if I can help it.
