See You On The Other Side

edited September 2011 in Vent
So, I don't really think I'm ready to write this, but I'm forcing myself to because maybe it'll help me accept what has happened.

Yesterday I had all three dogs outside playing. Dusty and Stormy were running all around the yard as fast as they could. I turned to look at Jacoby and behind me I heard a blood-curdling yelp/scream...It was my Dusty boy. As I'm sure most of you know by now, Dusty is my black Lab...and everything that is important to me. I ran to go help him and when I got to him he was dragging his two back legs, trying to walk. I thought he had broken his legs. I never expected what was to come.
We brought him to the animal hospital, and we were told this as soon as we walked through the door (after they had taken Dusty out back on a stretcher) "Will you be using cash, credit or debit to pay for this visit?"...Yea, lots of compassion for animals huh? So after we got the monetary situation all fixed, we were told that Dusty had slipped a disc in his back, which pushed up on a tube-like bone that holds nerves, causing severe pain. The vet said that they would load him up with Morphine, muscle relaxers, and anti-inflammatories, and leave him overnight to see if there was any improvement.
We went back to the hospital this morning, at 7, and...he was still the same, if not worse. I went to see my baby and looked into those dark amber eyes and knew it was time. I curled up on the floor next to my boy and held his head while I sang to him. The vet gave him the shot and Dusty went to sleep forever.
Dusty was only 6 years old, and according to the vet he was extremely healthy as far as his heart, lungs, and stuff like that went. He knew some sing language, many tricks, and I also taught him to get the remote and tissues on command. He was my whole world, and I'll never have another dog like him. He was one of those dogs you only get once in your life, the special one that forever leaves a pawprint on your heart, and a big slobbery kiss on your cheek.

  • Sorry for your loss. Any pet is hard to lose, but being young and healthy makes it worse. Keep your chin up.

  • Oh my god RockStar! I'm so sorry! I had no idea until now, damn it, if only I was on earlier. This is unbelievable, NOT DUSTY. I'm sorry. I have no idea what to say. This would be like me losing my boy Bully. I feel so bad. It feels like I lost a pet right now reading what you said, and remembering all the pictures and stories I heard about Dusty. If you ever need anything PM me, even if it's just to talk about what happened. You'll always be one of my good friends here and you'll always have a special place with me. Never forget that.
Goodbye old VP, hello disaster. xD

  • Your story was very hard to read. But when you said that you sang to him, it reminded me of how I did that for my horse when we were putting her down.
We put her down on Monday, and I'm for sure still havent gotten over it, and it is very had to deal with such things.
Even though I still have 2 horses that I love to death, she was my oldest, and will forever hold a special place in my heard.

Just thought I would comment, I thought it was sweet how we both sang to out pets as they were leaving us.
This is what I sang...
"Hush-a-bye, don't you cry,
Go to sleepy little baby.
When you wake, you shall have,
All the pretty little ponies.
Blacks and bays, dapples and greys..."
