Mammoth has a thought on Wolves

edited August 2011 in General Discussion
So I got into a mild discussion with a fellow player about wolf hybrids on this game.

They were experessing annoyance that not all of the wolf species (and subspecies) create wolf hybrids.
Then we began talking about how some players are against the idea of wolf hybrids on this game. That they should be mutts. And then on the otherside how some players believe any feral breed should create a 'hybrid'.

Now I am contemplating this.
I am not trying to change anything in the game or really suggest anything for the ops, but this got me thinking and I felt like saying a few things.
This is just Mammoth ruminating on a thought, if you would like to going in a friendly discussion I would appreciate that too.

My first thought is whether or not hybrids should exsist in this game.
I think they should. Wolf Hybrids exsist in the real world. I personally own a grey wolf/malamute cross in real life.
I think who ever created this "breed" or better yet the ability to create hybrids was being true to life.
And for those who feel they should be considered mutts I dont agree.
They are not a mixed breed dog as say a golden lab/ german shepard cross would be.
They are a wild animal crossed with a domestic animal. They are seperate species (unless you talk to a few scientists who insist on classifiying dogs as a subspecies of the grey wolf, which is a whole different discussion that I dont agree with)

Any who...

Techinacally speaking the Timber wolf is not a recognized species, its confusing a subspecies with a species.
Its is a common name of the species of wolf recognized as the Grey Wolf (Canis lupus), now there is a recognized subspecies of grey wolf called the eastern timber wolf.

Now that I cleared that up,
I feel the grey wolf and any of its subspecies on this game should create wolf hybrids.
arctic wolf & mexican wolf.
I would also think that the seperate species Red wolf should also create wolf hybrids.

Now, some suggested that things like fox, jackal, hyenas, dhole, maned wolf, etc (wild breeds) should create hybrids.
Um, no.
First of all hyenas are of an entirely different genus and could never cross with a dog and create offspring.
As for jackals and foxes in theory it could happen due to being in the same genus but no one (as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong) sells jackal/dog hybrids or fox/dog hybrids.
Now Coyotes and dogs do cross, but I don't think that should be considered a 'wolf hybrid'
But I think a coyote/wolf cross should.

As for this troublesome problem in the game of hybrids crossing and crossing and crossing to include all manner of breeds (I own a wolf hybrid in game that has a dozen or more parent breeds in its hertage)
I think that could be simply fixed. Wolf hybrids can be created (without being mutts) but not cross, neuter them automatically like mutts. I think they should exsit in the game, because they are a very real thing in the canine world.
My reasoning for not letting them cross because a dog/wolf 50/50 cross is a half wild animal half dog hybrid, but when you start breeding like mutts with a little wolf in them to other mutts with a little wolf in them I don't consider that hybrids, their just mutts.
I wouldnt have a problem with a 50/50 wolf hybird to cross with a wolf and still be called a wolf hybrid because that's still staying with this thought of a half wild animal but I understand that gets combersume in the programing.

Okay, I think that's all I wanted to say.
hehe, there I spoke my weird little mind.

And plus I think that this would take a ton of time to code.

 • Since this is just discussion and I can dream a little..

If we try to take the wolf hybrid into "reality" we must also do the same for every other breed in the game. This means Lab and shepherd cross would produce a crossbreed, not necessarily a mutt.

Personally, I'd love to have the ability to breed mutts that weren't neutered, though for the sake of being "politically correct" I'd call them crossbreeds.

Two different breeds of dog bred would produce a viable crossbreed that could be further bred. Breeding two crossbreeds together (of the same cross) would have a chance to produce a mixed little of which could be granddame, grandstud or crossbreed. So 2 lab/shepherd crossbreeds bred together might have pups that are crossbreed, lab or shepherd.

A crossbreed could be bred back into a breed to produce a chance of pups of that breed. So if your crossbreed was lab/shepherd and you bred to a shepherd, pups have a chance of being born either shepherd or crossbreed.

Breeding two crossbreeds, that aren't of the same cross would produce sterile mutts, unless the breed of at least one of the parents of both dogs are the same, in which case, you might get a mixed litter of crossbreed and mutt. So if you bred a lab/yorkie crossbreed with a lab/shepherd crossbreed, you have a chance of getting more crossbreeds like either parent or you get sterile mutts.

The same thing could apply to wolf and wolf hybrids.

Just think it could be fun

 • This was just me musing on a thought.
Yes I agree it would be fun to have true cross breeds, I've never owned a true pure blooded animal.
I could really get into breeding like the "perfect sleddog" crossing breeds to create my masterpiece.
hehe
But alas this is a game and we are restricted by coding and whatnot.

*sigh*
But like you said, we can dream.
I like the idea of crossbreeds. But I think there should be "mutts" still if in our little wish-world we were allowed to crossbreed. Like if a dog becomes greater than 25/25/25/25 then it looses its breeding ability or something.
*shrugs* just musing on this string of thoughts.

I guess techinically if i was really ambitious I could breed my perfect sleddog through this hybrid loophole, *contemplates* hmmmmmm
