Any Boxer People out there??

edited August 2011 in General Discussion
I have a boxer (real life) and i wanted to start conformation because he is gaint and handsome but don't know how. He doesn't have the best mannors because my dad babies him and he bites and mounts people so he is a very bad dog. The only way to train him is get him really tired first. He does know the basic things though loike sit, down come and such. Ill try to post pictures of him. He is a very, VERY handsome dog and and i think would do very good in the show ring if he behaved. How do you train a dog to stake (sp?)? Also is there way he could be *too* big that he wouldn't do good. He has grown up doing agility and playing with Border Collies so he is very solid and musclur. Alos his ears aren't cut for show, they aren't as tall and he has a nick in one ear. Would this effect him in the ring? Ill try and get some pics of him and his bite up. I no there are some people who show in conformation and i want to know how it get involved with it mostly.

  • If he has too much energy, take him for a long walk before you train him. Not one long enough to tire him out so much that all he wants to do is lie down and sleep, but enough so that he seems docile.
I agree, Im not a Boxer person, but I know some people who have some. They are very beautiful dogs. I dont think (dont quote me on that) that a dog can be too big for conformation, but Im not sure as I only show horses.

    Actually Msyt is wrong.
A dog can in fact be too tall or short and can be disqualified for height. Check the AKC standard for the Boxer.

It's stack. It's basically having the dog's legs parallel and the dog itself alert. There are a number if ways to stack your dog like doing it by hand, or teaching it to stack itself by "baiting" your dog.

I believe his ears must be cropped and as for the nick in his ear, I don't know. I haven't seen him! Again, read the standard to learn the ideal image for the Boxer. He may or may not do well. Not trying to be negative, but from the information you've given, chances are he is not going to do well.

Your dog needs to behave itself as best you can get it to. A badly behaving dog in the ring is usually frowned upon.

To learn the basics I'd suggest finding some classes near you and getting some books from the library on handling. Also go to dog shows and watch! It's a good way to learn. Talk to some handlers when they aren't busy.

Another thing is he must be registered with the AKC in order to show. He cannot be neutered to show in the conformation ring as well.

BUT, if you'd like to show in Juniors, where the dog doesn't matter, it's more how YOU handle your dog, then most of the above information doesn't apply. Just as long as he is registered and well behaved, and you are a good sport and are under 18, then you can do Juniors. ^-^

Though I won't be able to show until I have a show quality dog on my own, I still have read a lot about it and met tons of handlers and breeders in my breed of interest. Hope it helped, those are the VERY VERY basic things. I'm sure I left out a few things..
  • You could try 4H dog showing with him, all you have to teach him is sit,lay down, walk around and a few other basic things. ;D I only know that cause Im thinking about showing my dog there when she gets older cause I'll already be there for horse shows. (plus some other places for horse shows xD)

  • thank you finny that was very helpful and exactly what i ment by "too big". Right now im having him "sleep over" my moms house so i can train him and i am doing mostly bomb proofing training and leting me handle him with out him biteing me. He is doing *A LOT* after only two days of training. I found this thing called the balance leash and it is helping so much. He doesn't pull and acts like a gentleman when he is whearing it! Best part is that its only a leash wraped around behind his front paw over his chest and up through his collar. It works beautifully! The nick is basically a half centimeter long cut on the outside of his ear. It is actually barley noticable right now. I no that he might not do good but im hoping for the best. I don't think ill join 4h, i might but if i did agility or obedience with any of my border collies i think it might mess them up a bit because it is a lot easier then a normal course. Here is a VERY bad pic of him rom yesterday when he was very tired and the lighting was bad and well i did a fail at stacking him and it ws takin on my ipod. His muscles don't show at all in this pic but growing up with border collies sisters has made him like a body builder. ill definatly try and take him outside tommarow and get better pictures.
<img src="http://i56.tinypic.com/nyhflw.jpg"; alt="http://i56.tinypic.com/nyhflw.jpg"; class="bb-image" /> (sorry about the size)

  • Thanks, you cant tell in the picture but his chest is white. I show in like 3 or 4 states around me with the farthest away being like 4-5 hours and I do agility, rally-o (training but I haven't shown), obedience (looking into my first show near thanksgiving), and dock diving. All with my border collies XD

  • WOW  You must be like -seriously- serious about showing then. xD I'm thinking I want to train my dog for maybe agility and -maybe- obedience but all I know about is horses, could you tell me how it works please? I've never done much then train my dogs for what I needed them for, not anything fun like that, haha.

  • Well, we are sorta seriouse, the place we go to most is like only an jour away and its our second home, the one that is 4-5 hours away is a special show. We do pretty good though and i have only fully trained one dog but we have gone to nationals 3 times for DOCNA and then CPE is *finally* going to have their nationals near us so im very excited to go there! They are both very fun and i think the first thing you should do is enroll your dog in an agility and competitive obedience class. Let me warn you though competitive obedience is 100% harder then you think it is! With agility i like to develope a really good relationship with them and really bond with them and i train tricks to develope their mind and i try and bomb proof a dog by taking it all diffent scenario and having him walk over diffent things and jump and run through differnt things just so nothing phases them. It really helps with agility and it shows in obedience class, Emme is always the first one to learn something new and if we are useing a new gadget to help them with an exerciseshe barely notices while the other old ladies are trying to make up excuses we their dog thought that a PVC pip box was goin to eat them.

  • I do agility with my older dog, too. :D Agility is so much fun. <3 She's a beginner though, unlike yours!

Anyway.I don't know much about conformation other than that it's basically about showing a dog that is as close as possible to matching the breed standard. I'd really recommend you getting your dog used to being touched and handled in ways that he usually wouldn't tolerate.

For instance, when my youngest dog, Annie, was given to me, should would not tolerate her ears being touched. I first made sure it wasn't an ear infection, and then I worked on it, since it was behavioral. You just slowly need to get them used to touching.
My dogs are clicker trained and food motivated, but even if you handsome guy isn't, there are other ways to motivate your dog.

Basically, what I did with Annie is I would touch her shoulders. If she didn't give an aggressive reaction, I'd click and treat.. Once I got to the point where I was completely comfortable with that spot, I moved up to the back of her neck. She was a bit more irritated with this one(twitched her lips/baring teeth), so I moved back to the shoulder blades.

She pretty much just began to associate her ears, the top of her head, neck, and shoulders being touched with good things. Now I mess with her ears all the time and she loves it. <3

I don't know in what instances your dog tries to bite you, but even if he's not showing aggression for touching, teaching him not to break his focus on something(like your treat when you're baiting him while he's stacked), just because someone(the judge) touches his back.

He's beautiful! Not being a Boxer person i can't say if he's conformationally correct. He's in a pretty good stack for his first time. ^^ His forelegs should be directly underneath him and he should not be leaning forward. Other than that he looks pretty great. Good luck!
  • Yerp, and everyone thought Juve was so stupid cause of that and cause he could get out of his kennel, but it meant he was really smart. xD He would put his nose by the latch and flip it up, I watched him do it a few times. xD And BOY watch out for him, you didn't want him to run away. xD But he would always come back right away, he just had to run around town, if we would have still lived in the country he would have been fine but we lived in town. One time he got loose and his "best friend" (Golden Retriever/Cocker Spaniel, weird mix but he reminded me of a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, which are beautiful dogs. ;D) was out when he was loose and Juve went to see him and Sam (his "best friend") tried to attack him, (Sam has that problem now with most all dogs for some reason :/) so I pushed Juve back, even though I knew it would take more time to catch him, I didn't want him to get hurt so I got bit in the hand by Sam. Then I went around back to the dead end he ran to and Harley (Wolf Hybrid) was in the fence and he got Juve to stand there while I caught him so it was worth being bit to catch him. xD

Everyone thought that he would be horrible with jumping on kids and all, but he loved kids the most.

I hope it does! Just work slowly. Start with somewhere you know you can touch him without any signs of aggression. If you can't, just start by standing with him and giving him treats/praise. So on and so on.
The nice thing with that is that he'll start associating you more with positive things! And that's always nice with a dog, right? :D

  • I've owned 3 Boxers. My baby Belle is impossible to train sometimes as well. I've learned the best way to train her is to praise the heck out of her. Boxers are usually huuuuuugggeee attention hogs, and if you use that to your advantage it'll be a snap. They are also very ADD so switching it up or making it very loud and exciting usually helps as well. Your Boxer is gorgeous by the way.

  • Well, i took him to a small agility show today because we were entered in it and we were running the BC's. I took bam out and everyon was like "LOOK AT THAT BOXER!! HE IS GORGEOUS!! Even the judge in the ring saw him and said ''oh my goosh, look at that boxer puppy!''. Everyone just couldn't get over how handsom he was. Plus there was a lady i talked to how does conformation with he aussies and i never noticed it before but he has a natural stack  I want to start taking him to a place near our house for conformation training. The lady who teaches the class they said should know the boxer standerd so i can't wait for her to see him. When i told one lady i wanted to show him in conformation she was like ''oh he'll win TONS of ribbons" when im really only going to have fun :) one thing i no for sure is that even if he is the number one boxer we will NEVER breed him because he is a pain in the butt, but i guess thats the boxers temperment -.- luckly he has a short coat so as soon as he stops growing I want to switch him to a raw diet like my other adults (we would feed the puppies raw to but they got sick when they were young so we are very cautiouse what they eat even though we think it was a virus) sohis coat gets shiny and and soft but at shows he wont need to much brushing or cutting or any thing to hard. I can't wait for class =3
