Icky, Muggy, Hot... BLAH!

edited July 2011 in Vent
I just need to vent slightly here... It is so freaking hot here! I can't sleep, I can't eat... All I want to do is sit and do nothing... And it's not just hot, but it's humid too! Everything just feels wet and soggy. I wish there was a way to keep cool, but I don't have access to a pool (even a community one and considering my neighborhood I wouldn't want to use it anyway!), I don't want an A/C as I have to pay for electricity.

This may sound funny, but we've actually been putting our pillows in the freezer so that it's easier to fall asleep. Staying asleep is another matter altogether.

I realize that it's summer and I shouldn't complain, but I have to wear a big, poofy princess dress on Saturday, as I am getting married, and it will be hotter that day than today! Ugh...

All in all, I just feel gross... So if anyone has any budget friendly tips to stay cool let me know!

 • Meh. Here I am worshipping the heat.. Take a nice, cold shower, that usually does the trick.. Or, if you have a basement or tiling in your house.. Lay down on the tiles and don't move. Or go in the basement and don't move. Basements are generally cooler because they're underground. If none of that works, just break out the good ol' ice packs and ice cubes.

 • Not sure where you live and if public places are close by.. But if available, go to places you know have A/C or central cooling. Somewhere it isn't weird to show up and just chill (pun intended ;D). Examples.. Library, cafe, restaurant, ect. Bring laptops, books (unless at the library), whatever and just hang out for the day.

If there's a breeze, keep windows open to circulate the air. If not, sometimes it's best to keep windows closed and actually keeps the place cooler. If unsure, designate the bathroom or something as a test room: keep the window(s) open and shut the door, walk in about a half an hour later (your body will know the difference first thing) and if cooler, do that throughout the place, if hotter, shut the window and keep the rest shut. Window fans tend to help. I personally hate having one in my room because it messes with my allergies (dust and pollen). But most have intake and exhaust settings -meaning it can either bring air in from the outside of pull it out of your place which would work great for humid days. Fans are much cheaper than running an A/C, though granted, not always as effective.

Agreeing with the previous post, basements are almost always cooler. I have horrible signal down there though so I don't bother. And ice cubes work. Can rub it on your face and let it drip over your body. Showers are nice but don't last long and waste a lot of water. What you could do is wet some washcloths and keep them in a container to keep in the fridge. When overbaringly hot, you can go grab on and run it over your face and body then rinse off and put it back in. Putting a couple together will keep them moist and keeping them in the fridge will keep them cool. I've never done this before and only just now thought of the idea, but it sounds like a good one to me =) Since the fridge is gonna be running anyways, why not?
