Lines and Stats

Okay, so I wanted to start specializing on one breed and train them for Dock Jumping events. I know in the eventing guide it says that the dog would need: Strength; Speed; Aggro; Courage; Hyper.

Although I'm unsure what effect aggro would have (negative or positive?) and whether too much is a bad thing.

Also, how many imports should I start with, how many pups should I keep? Etc... I've always just done lines to get to 10x4s and that's easy(ish), but now I really want to focus on stats and such.

Could anyone help me out and clear this all up for me?

 • I'm not a Dock Jumping expert. In fact, I have terrible luck in it. However, when the Dock Jumping challenge was going on, many of the dog's were aggro capped, including the one that won. So, I'd do aggro, because the sooner a dog aggro caps, the longer it can event. Off subject, but, I also recommend a loyalty cap.

I don't know about line size, but the longer you can breed the 10x4s, the higher stats will go. So I'd go with a pretty big line, or start with 16 imports, see where that takes you.

Pups, pick through litters carefully and keep one or two with the best desired stats. Personally, I keep 1.

 • Thanks. I started with 20 imports and I'll do another 40 later on maybe another 20 after that. I know I should focus on strength and hyper. Though I don't aggro cap imports right away I will be doing aggro cap in the 2nd generation.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully I can pull this off!
 • Actually, I've been keeping an eye on this dog: <a href="http://virtualpups.com/index.php?r=dog/view&id=817951"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://virtualpups.com/index.php?r=dog/view&id=817951. Though I don't have 100 skill in handling yet he's been placing 1st/2nd/3rd/4th in dock jumping events. He is aggro capped and even though his strength and loyalty aren't capped he's been doing very well. Can't believe this dog was only 250! Thank you rescue kennels!

Also, I did find this post by Tarnish: <a href="http://virtualpups.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=69175"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">viewtopic.php?f=16&t=69175 She really is a genius when it comes to VP!
 • When breeding for an event and not necessarily for 10x4s, I'd grab as many imports of the breed as you can. xD I'm working with African Boerboels now for weight pull, and doing decently last I checked. I'd focus on the main stat that effects the event (for weight pull it's strength), and just breed the best dogs with that stat you can.

 • Glad to help, like I said though, Dock Jumping never was my cup of tea.

You can cap strength? Huh. Learned something new everyday. Nice dog, I've seen him in events before.

 • For Dock Jumping I know the stat that plays the greatest part is Courage. Though I don't feel like sticking them in Boarding forever and coming back to them in a month. >.<

I placed him in a whole bunch of free events to build up my fame points, but when I realized that he was doing really well in Dock Jumping and that I could actually make money off of him I stopped doing that and am now focusing on the one event.

Strength caps at 200, I believe she meant that if that is the one stat you are focusing on to just stop training once it reaches that point.
 • That's not what I meant. xD

I've worked on a line of African Boerboels, aiming for strength because I want them to excel at weight-pulling. I groom them until 11.11 (males) and 11.6 (females) (they die at 12), aggro max (since aggro doesn't effect weight-pulling), and breed, keeping a male and a female from each litter. The ones I keep have the highest birth strength. If there are any ties, I go for highest endurance, and then highest courage, since those are the next two major stats that effect the scoring.

 • I've been grooming the males to 12. I know their lifespan is 12, but they don't die right away and they are still fertile. I should be able to get 4 - 8 breedings out of them.

The females I groom to 11 as I want to keep a good year for breeding to get as many litters as possible from them and I'll choose the highest statted pup from there.

In Tarnishes guide to lines she mentions capping strength. The highest stat possible in strength is 200 after training, so if you are only focusing on that than why train more? She mentions doing this at the end of the line because if you are aiming for 10x4s you want as many breedings as possible. You might not get 10x4s in the first litter.
 • I guess that makes sense but... *pout* It makes me feel better? 8'D Part of me feels that birth stats might effect shows, but that may just be wishful thinking on my half.

 • Lol, Poor Kaz! I've gotten tired of trying to reach 10x4s. Everyone wants them for a limited time and when VP gets full of them they have little value. Though if you can breed excellent show dogs every time, you can make more money.

D: Of course Birth Stats effect shows! It's all about birth stats! Having them maxxed (and aggro or loyalty caps) just helps their cause in the show ring.
Racing and Weight Pull, 2 key examples of why birth stats matter.
I have the highest speed birth stat on the game, and that's on Cape Foxes. My racer does exceptionally well, generally winning all her races because those who compete with her have 147 and lower birth speed. Obviously it depends on other stats as well, (especially strength, which Capes lack in comparison to Greyhounds) which sometimes happens. A greyhound with .7 lower speed will beat my Cape because it's birth strength is remarkably higher.

Er Weight pull is the same story. I believe Aziu has some pretty wicked Mastiffs competing at the moment, and last time I checked they were doing pretty well because of their high birth strength.

Birth stats are why really intelligent dogs win in the show events. Or why Herding or Mushing dogs with high endurance do really well.

*stops ranting* if none of that makes sense just look over this message. ;D
