I hate death!

edited May 2011 in Vent
So my mom bought me a couple of mice not too long ago. Two days ago one of them, Sitka, started having seizures. I knew it wouldn't be long before she was gone. A friend told me to "just put her in the freezer"...I just couldn't bring myself to do that. This afternoon my little Sitka passed away. My other mouse, Aislin is acting depressed. She keeps laying where Sitka died, even though I cleaned the cage. I'm not really looking for any sympothy, I'm just looking for any advice on how to cheer Aislin up.

This was Sitka <a href="http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/9518/5679726763a21fm3.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/9518/5679726763a21fm3.jpg;

 • I think you should get another mousie (:
 • Eh I'm not sure if Aislin would accept another one. My "just put her in the freezer" friend knows a lot about small animals, so I'll ask him what he thinks

 • Oh, maybe you should go to petco or something and tell a worker about your story and ask them what you should do... they seem to know a lot about that stuff lol
 • That's where mom got Sitka and Aislin. I don't really like to buy from pet stores, I buy from a breeder. I won't even get started on the reason why I hate pet stores, lol

Surprisingly, not many pet store employees know much about the animals they sell... they always have a lot of answers, but they tend to not be the right ones... like suggesting sand as substrate for bearded dragons, when feeding on sand can cause impaction, or saying that unsexed hamsters of different species will be "just fine" if kept in the same habitat... Pet store employees are mostly just there to stock shelves and sell things. I'd suggest doing your own research online, and talking to people who've got rodent experience.

That sounds like one of the least humane ways possible to put an animal down. No offense, but from that statement it doesn't seem like your friend is a very reputable source of small animal knowledge. Most things I've read/people I've talked to agree that the most humane way to put a small rodent down is to hold down its head and yank it's body back quickly, which severs it's spinal cord and kills it instantly, or to use CO2, which just kinda puts them to sleep.

Sorry for your loss

Other than the freezer part, he is very knowledgable. He's a licensed breeder, and has raised animals for over 20 years. Either method I wouldn't be able to do.

Thank you

 • I think you should get another mouse. Since mice like to be in social groups that would be the best thing. And if you did get your mice from a pet store just get the another mouse that was in the same cage as Sitka and Aislin. But if you choose not to get another mouse you just need to give more attention than you did.

 • Yea, I'll try to talk mom into allowing another mouse

 • I've no idea if rats and mice are the same, but I own three rats. The other baby one died about two weeks after I had her, so I know how you're feeling. If mice are like rats, it shouldn't be hard to find a new mouse that Aislin will get along with. My three adult females met two adult females and bonded instantly, they didn't ever fight. Same with when I introduced the three adult females to my baby female, they hit it off right away.

Always introduce them in an environment they've never been before. Example, a bath tub. They won't get territorial and they'll be in such a new place, they'll hardly notice each other for the first little bit. Good luck!
 • Wow you have good rats then. My two girls hate every other rat they've ever met, lol.

Oh a bathtub is a great idea! I ususally use a large box, but a tub would be much better.

I'm currently trying to talk mom into another mouse, it's not easy at all.
