Training Motivation

edited May 2011 in Vent
I have the hardest time training my VP dogs! I'm fine when I train somebody else's dog, but when it comes to any of mine I get a "Ugh not this again" feeling. Any ideas of how to "get in the zone"? I've tried cranking music up, and pretending it's somebody else's dog, but neither really works.

 • I have the same problem. I could train for hours for someone else, but then when it came to my lines I was going "Seriously, another one?"

I tried music and really I can only do it if I'm in the mood to. Usually I blow my money for someone else to train my dogs while I train others. I don't make money, but I don't lose it either.
 • Haha same here. I have so many lines that I started but can't finish.

 • 1. Play music, and get into a groove
2. get into the zone, to the point you dont even see the computer screen anymore, its a blurry mess, but you still know exactly what to do (best for goroming/rhing long periods) - I do this for most of my dogs and others.
3. Take breaks every year, even if it means a quick 5 second walk around the room. (not for when you are getting blurry vision, there is no point to stop and change that).
4. Reward yourself, either with real life things, or virtual things that you get to buy. I normally reward myself after a huge bunch of dogs, that I get to go to the store and buy something I would never normally buy for myself.
5. Do it while you are doing chores, or whatever, do one thing (part of it), then to the next, train a year, go back to the first thing, and before you know it everything will be done.

Thats all I can come up with for now, sorry.

Lilly
 • Thanks Lilly for the advice!

It's so hard to stop in Grooms or RHing... And that's mostly what I have to do. Ugh how I hate lines. My problem is, I can't stop doing lines so I will forever be tormented with long grooms.

Ya it most def is, I normally will go 6 years (for a 12 year groom) then take a quick break, and then back for another 6. Im pretty good at doing 6 years without being to annoyed. BTW the song has to be something you can sing along to, or watch tv while training, you know where the buttons are all mine are memorized so I can watch the tv and my hands are still going. I love training though, its my stress reliever, so Im not sure if what I do works for any of you :/

If all else fails, send to the doggies to me :P
 • Wow Lilly, that was a big help! I've done the blurry thing, and it does work! Woo, now hopefully I can get a bunch of dogs trained....somebody give me a push? lol
