Champion Picking...PICS ADDED

edited April 2011 in General Discussion
My family and I flew out to Japan a few months ago, going back again in December. Whenever I go there I look at their top of the line, champion bred, Tosa Inus... xD At first it was really hard to find a reputable breeder because the Tosas in Japan are kept and fought in secrecy, we actually had to contact a very important member of the Japanese community just to get a peek at the Tosa puppies from champion fighting lines. I ended up coming into contact with this adorable six week old puppy named Roku. He is sired by one of Japan's best fighters, and his mother is a champion in show. I'm really thinking about getting him, he's perfect, I can already tell that if I brought him back to America and competed him he would BLOW AWAY the American bred Tosas. When I go shopping for puppies I call it "champion picking"...and so far I've done really good in picking : D (not to brag or anything xD)..

So my question is...do you think I should go for it?? Total cost would be 7,000.. and that's only because I've gotten to know the breeder!! It would cost more if I hadn't gotten on his good side. I don't think it's that big of a deal because I've paid more for my Bordeauxs, and one of my other Tosas.. but then again getting another dog specifically for competition is always a BIG deal. I'm thinking about breeding the Tosas I already have, and just keeping one of those puppies. But I'm not to sure I want to do that.. I've always had a thing about my Tosas being my babies, I don't want them to breed!! O.O Thing is, people have offered to pay thousands for my puppies, what if I bred them then sold the litter then got Roku..but that wouldn't make much sense would it?? IDK. My mother is putting all of these ideas in my head!! Sorry for rambling..if you have an idea, please share, or opinions...but I prefer ideas xD

Hah, I've been called Zynny, Wimpy Whomper, Husky Shark, mutt mutt, if you're a friend you can go ahead and give me whatever nick name you want : )
  • lol do you like zing? XD
I hope I am (:

  • Yes, thats fine, and of course you're a friend, anyone that knows that my real name is Zyndalee and not LaLa is a good friend ; )

Anyway, the Japanese breeder sent me a letter that I got this morning, because my mother for some reason forgot to give it to me last night, and it says that I have competition for Roku. Another Japanese fighter wants him for that, FIGHTING. He's supposed to be great, just like his dad. I can understand that fighting is Japanese tradition, and that that's what Roku was bred for..heck, that's what the breed was created for!! BUT, I refuse to let him lead that kind of life and I think he would have a much better time competing in Schutzhund and weight pulling and winning me money xD
  • awesome! XD
so your getting him?!

  • Sounds cool. I hope you can get him! 7000 sounds like a ton of money for puppy to me. Most of my dogs cost less than $300, but then again they aren't champions or anything. I'd be careful with a pup bred for fighting, but you seem experienced with dogs like that so I'm sure you'll be fine.

As for breeding I wouldn't recommend it. If you do it correctly you won't make much money at all.

Yes, when it comes to Tosas, I know what I'm doing.. I've had perfect control so far.
Did you mean if I bred them incorrectly?? I've bred my Bordeauxs before..got 25,000 in total after they were all sold, breeding incorrectly isn't going to be a problem for me, it's just the sentimental thing I guess.

No. I've never bred but I know people that do. If you do all the proper health tests, care, etc, you shouldn't be making much money. Some people take breeding more seriously then anothers. Seriously, I know people that study a breed for years and years and put thousands of dollars into their breeding programs. Then there are others who take two dogs and let it happen. Of course there's always the risk of a problem occuring with your female or the pups.

I have no doubt you are experienced. Breeding is just too much money, work, and risk in my opinion. Anyways, good luck. Do you know when you'll get the pup if you do decided to buy him? I hope you can, I would hate to see him end up being used for fighting! That makes me mad. =(

  • Oh! I see what you're saying now. My mother is a vet and my father is an ex-breeder, he also owns his own company. All the tests I do are free : ) And I make more profit then I spend. As for Roku, I received an email and the breeder says that my "competition" has offered to pay 10k for him...I'am SO uping that. Roku is going to be mine! :roll:
  • 10k for a dog? Wow. We could get out of credit card debt with that o.0;

  • I'd say, if you can afford it, go for it. I'd just like to mention, however, dog fighting in Japan is different from what is imagined, especially amongst Tosa. It's more doggie wrestling, with the pair of dogs trying to shove each other out of the ring, and it's actually almost rare for a dog to be seriously injured. The 'champion' fighters, as I'm sure you know, are highly respected dogs. But because fighting is rather different from what we'd imagine usually, I'm sure he won't be a huge issue- not to mention you've had plenty of experience with large, powerful breeds.

I want pictures though. I was really interested in tosas myself, but my husband finds them ugly, and they're much too powerful for me.

Thank you for explaining this so I didn't have to, I know all of this though. The Tosa fights are nothing like the American fights, the goal is actually to avoid blood, and any type of big injury. The key is to overpower not to hurt, the Tosa is often referred to as the Japanese Wrestling dog. I already know he's not going to be an issue, I've never had problems with my giant breeds. As for the ugly thing, I think they are gorgeous, majestic dogs, Bordeauxs are uglier though xD

I will definitely post pictures when I can, and only if the breeder even agrees to let me have pictures : /
  • Not to be rude or anything, but how exactly are you making money showing your dogs? I've known people who were very big on dog shows, and their dogs placed pretty often, and they never made a penny.... to the best of my understanding, even the people who win grand prizes in very large, sponsored events barely recoup the money the put into the dog to make it a winner...

When I say showing, I mean competing in general basically. Winning a competition can make you a lot of money. I train my dogs myself, with the help of my parents we have no problem with money, and we have no problem making money. Weight pulling, especially unofficial events, can make me thousands if I win..just as an example. The whole point of this thread is not about making money, it was really about opinions on whether I should get the dog or not. And the question wasn't rude..it was just a question : )
  • Maybe you can sell just one or two of the puppies, perhaps train them first so that they would get you more money...

Anyways, I think you should go for it :D Tosa's are obviously your passion, and I know if I could get a nice, show Springer, I would definantly get it in a heartbeat. And, it sounds like money and training isn't a problem, so that's a plus! Will Lala be ok with a new male? Eh, I'm sure you can handle it :D Good luck!
    Is quiting due to no time, anyone can contact me at my nonpersonal email coconaur@aol.com

  • -peeks in- You should totally go for it! If thats what you want to do and you have the money for it then why not? Or I have a better idea....you could give the puppy to me! Ehem. No, not really, its your babeh and I need to get my own.

I know that if I had the oppurtunity to get a German Shepherd Dog I would jump on it in a hearbeat, no second thoughts. Tosa's for you are what German Shepherd's are for me; my love and passion. Although, unlike you, I currently don't have the means or space for such a big dog. -cries- Once I move into a bigger place and have some money to spare I'll start looking at GSD breeders. Anyway, enough about me...if you're liking the Japan bred Tosa's as opposed to the American bred ones then I'd probably go with the Japan bred ones if I were you.
  • Aww, I hope you get your baby gemi..and by the way, where the heck have you been?? When you're ready to start looking for GSDs, I know a ton of reputable breeders IN AMERICA. My grandfather got his work line GSD from one of them, that dog is perfect, just amazing. His name is Sojak. Sojak (88 pounds) and Bully (my 230 pound Tosa), are constantly butting heads (through a fence, of course). That's the GSDs personality though, they believe they can take on anyone at anytime :lol: . That's what made me fall in love with Sojak, I was irritated at first but now I make sure that Bully is never near him, I have no doubt that Bully would eat that dog if he ever got the chance.

Oh, I CANNOT STAND the way American breeders breed the Tosa most of the time..usually they have too many wrinkles (or not enough), are too thin, are to short, or are just obese. Two of my Tosas weigh over 200 pounds, but they were bred to standard, they are pure muscle. When you see an American bred Tosa that weighs over 200 pounds it's not because he was bred that way, it's because he's fed too much!! I had one before, I loved him just like all my other dogs, but I couldn't compete him in anything and he died of complications three years after I bought him, and I know it's because of the way he was bred and what he went through when he was a puppy (before I got him). He was one of my first Tosas though, and he was a gift, I definitely didn't buy him. :shock:
  • Me too. I know that I will someday, I just hope its sooner rather than later. I've been around, had a lot going on. I started babysitting for a friend a couple weeks ago for a little extra cash, been getting up at like 6:30 every morning when I usually sleep in until at least 9, so I've just been trying to adjust to the new schedule. Aww, Sojak sounds like he's a riot. lol Yeah, thats one reason I like them. They think they are bigger and tougher than they really are and think they can take on anything, I know that if I got one and had it trained right then it would never let anything happen to me or my family. The police use them for a reason...they are highly intelligent and so freakin loyal. I mean, you can see the intelligence in their eyes, just look at the dog in the siggy you made me. Anyway...thanks, I'll let you know when I'm thinking of looking for one.

That sucks. I've never really looked into Tosa's, so I wouldn't know anything about all of that, but I know you know your stuff when it comes to Tosa's. Its to bad though, about the american bred Tosa's. And I'm sorry about the one you had that died, that sucks. Especially if it was only a few years after you got it. I've had so many pets die from either old age or disease (all were strays that we rescued, except one whom we got from a friend), so I can sympathize.
  • Sojak is definitely loyal...not just to his owner, but his whole family. He was quick to protect me from a bull that charged me on my grandpa's farm, of course Bully and LaLa were already on the job of getting the Bull away, but when I saw Sojak come bounding out of the barn, it was like an angel flying..lol. Corny I know, but that's what he looked like. He just came running up out of nowhere, and tried to take the bull head on, scared the crap out of me. Luckily the bull wasn't too keen on taking on a 200 pound dog, a 100 pound dog, and the German Shepherd that terrorizes him every day. He turned around and gave up. My dogs came running back to me, proud that they protected their mommy again, but Sojak trotted right past me and back into the barn to continue his work..as if he didn't just help save my butt. Ever since then whenever I yell or scream, Bully will come charging to look for and save me, I think he wants to get there to protect me before Sojak does, he's always been my jealous boy. :lol:

I do know my stuff when it comes to Tosas, people don't have any idea how big of a compliment that is to me. :mrgreen: I spent weeks, months even, researching the breed so that when the time came for me to get my very own I would know exactly what I was doing. It's nice when people acknowledge the fact that I actually know a lot about them. Heck, I put all this work into researching them I should get some credit right?? lol! I can tell that you have a passion for GSDs, I love when people have the same kind of obsession I do, it makes me feel like being a dog addict is ok ; ) And it is. I never get tired of your stories and experiences Gemi ; )
  • Sorry. I couldn't get pictures of Roku. The breeder literally told me "ABSOLUTELY NOT." ... Like I said, secrecy.

Anywho..I got these pictures online because they look exactly like Roku!!

<img src="http://i53.tinypic.com/29vf9s2.jpg"; alt="http://i53.tinypic.com/29vf9s2.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

<img src="http://i54.tinypic.com/153spae.jpg"; alt="http://i54.tinypic.com/153spae.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

<img src="http://i55.tinypic.com/2i95tg4.jpg"; alt="http://i55.tinypic.com/2i95tg4.jpg"; class="bb-image" />
