A lot of college and the military?

My dad and I were talking the other day [I don't think I've mentioned the fact that my father is an Army veteran and was a field medic, I believe] about what I am going to do for college. I would like to go into a mainly male dominated career called cardio-thoracic surgery. I would also like to obtain the title of Chief of Surgery, which I believe that only a handful of women have achieved that title.
The question comes to this: I want to go to Ohio State. I live in North Carolina, and out of state tuition fees are rising as we speak. My mom will probably spend the next five years of her life paying off college debt for four years at a community college. How long will it take me to pay off a 15-16 year debt at a university?

This is where my dad brought up the military. If I serve four years in the military, the military will most likely pay my college tuition, especially if I list my home state as Ohio, which means I will be paying Ohio taxes. I was thinking Coast Guard, Marines or Air Force, and then the Navy. Coast Guard would be an awesome thing to do, I've always wanted to be a water rescuer, which is what you see on the Deadliest Catch. Ironically, I'd like to do it for Alaska. xD The Marines...Well, who wouldn't want to be part of the Marines? My uncle is part of the Air Force, and I would like to fly. Not to mention how interesting it would be, etc. If I were to join the Navy, I'd like to be a SEAL. Women aren't allowed to be a SEAL, and I tried to talk to some Navy reps, but they were all short with me and not giving me an actual reason as to why a woman cannot be a SEAL. [Funny thing, I can actually do half of the requirements, and I have a year and a half before I turn seventeen and I can recruit myself to make sure I can do all of the requirements].
I would like to be a field medic.

Does anyone have any family members or friends in any branch of the military? My dad and uncle were in the Army and Air Force, not to mention my friend Jason is Air Force and my friend Branden is Marine. Can anyone help me out?

 • My cousin was in the Army, but switched to the Marines. He said that other than his wife and children, it was the best thing in his life. I wish you luck on any path you choose to take!

 • My brother was and my cousin is a Coast Guard officer. My brother was a higher up tho. He loved it and was a machanic on the boats. He loved it except the month he had to go away every once in a while.
 • I served in the Army and my daughter just graduated Tech School for the Air Force. If your dream is to be a thoracic surgeon, talk to the ROTC program at the colleges in Ohio and North Carolina. If you join ROTC, they will pay for most of your college, I believe, as long as you do a tour of service after college, as an officer. So you would graduate college, serve how ever many years as an officer, then after an honorable discharge, be free to pick up whatever school you need to and/or start practicing your medical degree in public hospitals.
