:( What the heck happened???

edited February 2011 in Vent
All this talk about animals and guinea piggies made me want to go play with my baby Theo..I look into his cage and call him, he ALWAYS comes out of his little house thing when I call him, but this time he doesn't move. So I poke him...and he's gone. Like, PERMANENTLY gone. I don't know what happened : ( My poor baby. He was born on New Years 2011, he's so young, what the hell happened?!?!

I'm the ONLY ONE allowed to touch him, I know that no one went into his cage and he was fine a few hours ago. In fact, he was running on his wheel and playing a few hours ago. Is there some kind of disease that kills hamsters suddenly and doesn't show symptoms? I'm horrified, depressed, AND totally stumped..WTH??

Here are some pictures of him...NO, they are not pictures of him dead. I can't believe I got a PM asking if some were of him dead. SMH. And for the rodent know-it-alls, I know that syrian hamsters aren't supposed to be kept together, but Theo and his mom were EXTREMELY close and when I seperated them I could tell that they were depressed..so I scooted their cages close to each other so they could interact through the bars at night and I let them cuddle and play with each other (under close supervision) for a few hours in the day time. They never got in to a single fight and would often take naps together. I can't even imagine what this is going to do to his mom..she had been acting weird, she kept trying to get over to his cage and she was squeeking a lot. Maybe she knew.. she's still trying to get over to his cage and his body isn't even in there anymore. What do I do about that? Do hamsters need closure about stuff?? IDK..should I show her thats he's dead? Eh..that just sounds cruel. Not a good idea probably. I'm just so lost... • The last two pictures are of Theo when he was a few days old.
 • My brother had a dwarf hamster and it was fine one day and gone the next. Don't know whatever happened to Smokey. He only had him for a couple of weeks. Then he got Gimli and he lived for two years, I don't know much about hamsters, but it's such a shock to have something vibrant and active suddenly gone.
 • I'm sorry, Lala. I'm not quite sure what had happened. I've owned many rodents and the only problem I had was with one of them. A while back I got my first hamster. I had no idea what to name him so I came up with some random name. Noi-Noi (pronounced noy noy) lol. Anyways. We had a really close relationship and I loved that little guy. I believe I owned him for the full 3 years that most hamsters live for on average. Well after he passed, I decided to get another hamster. We went to Petco and looked at them, and I saw this female that I wanted. We asked about her but they said she was too young to leave so we should come back in a couple of days.

Well long story short, we got her. She was So sweet, and we named her Fawn. I had her for a couple of weeks before she died. It was sad.. but the difference is, she showed signs of depression. She wouldn't eat or drink and always stayed up in the top part ofthe cage where she'd sleep. I think she was home sick =/ But depending on what type of bedding you use, it could be that too. I can't quite remember if it's Aspen shavings or another type, but one type of shavings is actually harmful to rodents and can kill them. That's the only thing I can think of if his death was sudden. Perhaps he was born with something wrong with him? I'm sorry for your loss though. He was a cutie <3

I wouldn't suggest showing the mother the dead child, but do keep a close eye on her. There's a depressive syndrome that animals can die from, from losing a loved one. She has motherly instincts though, so of course she'd know if something was wrong. I wish you luck, dear.

 • I did show her. She smelled him then cuddled with his body and kept trying to pick him up with her little paws. He's to big to be carried anymore though. We buried him : ( His mom is sleeping right now, she didn't want to part with his body last night though. I'm going to see how she acts today.

 • Awh! I'm sooo sorry Lala! :c That's kind of what happened with my horse, happy and running around in the morning, then gone less than a day later :c

Poor Theo. Let me know how his mom is dealing with it c: I'll try and see if I can find anything about how he died for you...

 • Thank you. I've been watching his mom and the worst is happening basically..I can tell she's depressed. She isn't eating anything. Usually I'll put food in her cage and she'll rush to get it. I even gave her her favorite, cooked egg, and she wouldn't touch it. I put her into the cage with a hamster that she grew up with in the pet store, and she took comfort in being with him for about 30 seconds then attacked him and I had to quickly grab them both and seperate them. This is very unusual because these two hamsters would have play dates like this every day, and they have NEVER fought or even had a conflict, they usually just play and cuddle with each other. I don't know what to do. I really hope she doesn't die, it would break my little cousin's heart.
 • I'm so sorry about Theo LaLa! I hope the mother is ok
