Stick shifts and hills.

This is less of a vent, so I put it in GD. xD

We are a standard shift family. The only automatic we own is a big SUV that has a lot of grab and pull in the wheel. My mother struggles to drive that car, especially in bad weather.
So she sticks to the Volkswagen Passat we own. I love that car. It's nice, and sleek, and it's a VW, and I love the VW builds. Especially the builds of the new VW Golf and Rabbit.
Well, my parents won't go and buy an automatic for me, which means I have to learn to drive the stick shift.
First time I drove, I stalled the car out so many times I could smell the rubber burning and everything. On a flat surface, I can go from first to second gear with no problem. Hills, however, scare the living daylights out of me. The car rolls back, which doesn't happen too badly on an automatic. By the time I get my foot off the break onto the gas and my left foot comes slowly off the clutch, I've already rolled back about three meters, if not more. Which freaks me out. If that happens on a road, I'd hit someone. D:

Today, however, mom and Brian sat out of the car [until it got too windy] until I figured out how to get the car rolling. Shifing isn't a problem. It's getting the car started in first and then going to second. I did it ;D I was extremely pleased with myself. Mom and Brian had to get back into the car, though, because it was getting really cold, and we were out for about fourty five minutes. In that time, I only stalled the car out three times, and that was because it was on a really steep hill [we were in my school parking lot], and I rolled onto the curb because the damn thing won't stay still on a hill like the automatic does. Anyhow. After three unsuccessful tries, I managed to get into first gear and into second, and I didn't do that particular hill again. xD

Anyone have any funny stories on them learning how to drive a stick shift? Does anyone still drive stick shifts anymore? O_o

 • I drive a stick shift! I have a love/hate relationship with my car.

I love it because it's orange
I can park it anywhere... That's about it!

I hate it because...
Stick shifts cost more to maintenance.
Brakes/Tires and all that fun stuff to make your car safe and run wear down faster.
It costs a lot in gas if you don't know how to drive it properly.
Grinding the gears causes everyone to have heard to suddenly stare in your direction.
My clutch peddle sticks.
I have the hardest time getting it in reverse
Clock doesn't work
Dome light doesn't work
Not a lot of features... The list goes on...

They are fun to drive and you do end up having more control over your car, but my next car is going to be much bigger/automatic/more features. I'm looking at a Sanra Fe actually.
 • My parents insisted I learn to drive a manual before they would let me even attempt to drive an automatic.

First time I drove, they really put me on the spot, made me back up out the driveway between two ditches.. I wasn't successful and put it in the ditch. Try that for driving your first time.. Turned sideways in the seat trying to see, managing a clutch, gas and break. LOL

I know what you mean about going backwards. I was practicing in town once and got stuck at a red light about halfway up a hill. A nice classic car was behind me and I couldn't for the life of me make the car go up the hill without killing it because I just knew I was going to back into that classic behind me, so was releasing the clutch too quickly.

I love a manual shift though.

 • Fortunately for me, where I live there are 2 manuals and an automatic.
For my first 30 hours of driving (I have to get 120 hours on my learners permit before I can go for my probationary license) I've driven the automatic, which is one of those uber awesome/big Territory's.
I've driven the Mazda 3 manual a total of 3 times, first time I stalled it about 5 times total, second time no stalls, third time only a few. I just need more practise! I love manuals and will definitely be getting one when I can afford a car, but for now I like driving the auto best cause it's easy. xD

 • Oh my gosh.. I know the scary feelings your talking about. My boyfriend, Brian, is trying to teach me to drive his standard.. I've grown up driving an automatic and that's what my chevy is and now I have to learn to drive a stick-shift D= His argument is "what if i pass out or cant drive or my contacts mess up on me? you'll need to be able to drive my truck home." So i agreed to learn. I've tried once and it scared the bejebeis (Be-jee-bee's) outta me!! I managed it okay, but im worried about trying again 0.0
 • I'm barely comfortable driving an automatic. In fact, I still hate it. xD Traffic scares me, I'm ADD and sometimes forget which is the gas and which is the break.

So imagine how I felt when Vincent shoved me into the driver's seat of his manual STi? 8'D I think I died on the inside.
Haha, mom won't let me drive the Passat on the open road until I get comfortable with the way the thing rolls back. I hate it. I'd rather go and get a little automatic, but nooo. "You have to learn how to drive a stick! They're much easier to control!" -_-
