R.I.P. Max!

edited February 2011 in Vent
OK, first, Max.

If you see my signature, I will explain... more. He was a black and white Chihuahua. My loyal companion for 5 years. He was out in our fenced yard, as usual, excersizing, eating his dog food, and using the bathroom, of course. Well, I got a new puppy, a beagle, Trigger. I was out front on the other side of the fence, letting Trigger use the bathroom. The neighbors had two pit bulls. They were outside. There was a brown-and-white pit bull, Lala. A black and white pitbull, Koko. I turn to go back inside and let Trigger off leash indoors and call Max in so they could play together and hear a scream-squeal that sounds like Max. I turn and see Lala, the pitbull, has Max by the neck and she is shaking him around. I stare. I don't move. I don't breathe. Trigger does the same. So max is there, kicking his legs, and the mean dog is in MY yard, over the fence, ahold of MY dog. I screamed. So, mom ran out and screamed. My grandpa walked out and mom yelled, "Dad (my grandpa is her dad), call 911! The neighbor's dog has Max and is killing him!" She was crying. She ran next door and got the neighbors. My grandpa yelled, "What!?" and called 911 and explained. I saw the neighbors smile and go to see what was wrong. They banged on the fence a few times. "Lala, no. bad dog." They said it calmly, too. I fired up. My mom kicked me inside and I went to my grandpa's room and watched through the window. It was bloody, actually.

Animal control arrived and seized the dog. It had killed Max. They put the small body in a trash bag and they took him to bury him in the pet cemetery.

I see the image, every day in my head.

He died Dec. 20th, 2010. The dog killed him almost instantly. The dog who killed him was euthanized Dec. 24th, 2010.

R.I.P Max.

The neighbor's never even apologized. Not a word. Next they trap MY cat in their house, and throw out harmful stuff into my yard for my puppy to get a holt of and eat.

I am so mad, but sad, inside. I vent out my anger on this very post.
R.I.P Max I love you so so much my baby Chihuhuahua dog! 2005-2010

  • Im sorry about your dog. But I am also sad that another dog had to be killed. Its bad enough for one dog to die but two?! They really should'nt have dogs, especially Pit Bulls. Those kinds of owners are the ones who earned Pit Bulls their bad name. I ,in a way, understand why they didn't appologize,as their dog was killed because of it all. I also understand your position cause Ive had two dogs killed on purpose and I have their image on those days in my head every time I think about them. It was my dog and her puppy,6 months from each other they were killed,Miley the mom when her puppies were 7 days old and Skidloader the pup when she was 6 months old.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. But when two Pit Bulls attacked my chihuahua/daschund mix I didn't just stand and stare, I fought back and saved my dog, he's fine now. But I can understand your situation and I can understand your reaction. Different reactions will come to different people. Those people don't deserve animals though. This is sad.
  • I am sorry for the loss of Max. I'm sorry you had to witness it as well.

Personally I think, regardless of the situation, the owners of that dog should have apologized for their dog's actions. Even if your dog had survived, their dog had escaped their own yard and had harmed another one. It is their job to make sure that the fence cannot be climbed, jumped, or dug out from. If an owner is to let their dogs live outside, or play outside unsupervised, it is our responsibility (as owners) to make sure our dogs are secure on our own property. Everyone has the reasonable expectation to not have to worry that something else will jump their fence and harm them or their property.

I could understand why they'd be upset with you, but it's all just tossing blame at the wrong person. People rarely want to just accept the consequences of their actions. We would rather believe that everyone else is at fault. It's easier than admitting we're not perfect.

If your neighbors are tossing trash or other bits of food to get your other dog, you should talk to your mother about setting up security cameras that would capture it being done. You'd want to make sure you can clearly see who it is, otherwise someone can claim "that could be anybody". More than likely, you'd have to put up a sign that says "security cameras in use", and you could even just try decoy cameras on other parts of the property. If they think only one part is covered, they could sneak around to the other sides. If they think the entire place is surrounded by cameras, they'll probably leave you alone. If you can get definite proof that they're throwing -anything- over your yard, you can call the police. Save some of the material and have it tested for poisons. If there's any chemical trace that could harm your dog, you can also sue and they can be charged with animal cruelty. [Best to look up specific laws in your area regarding security cameras + animal cruelty charges.] The poison that is probably most common would be anti-freeze, but they could toss over nearly any household cleaner. I'm not sure if the owners would, but they could always pour a poison over the fence. If your dog walked in it and licked his paws later, he could still be harmed or killed. It's not as noticeable as food, since it would be slightly absorbed in the dirt.

Euthanasia was probably the best option for Lala. It costs a lot of time to rehabilitate a dog, not to mention all of the money involved. Quite frankly, those people do not need to own any dog, Pit or not. It's an absurd reaction to just stand there as your dog is killing or attacking another animal. Some people might be completely stunned at the sight, but just hitting the fence isn't anywhere near a good response.

I would have to say that it was probably best you didn't try to get Lala off of Max. If it had mistaken your arm/hand for the dog, or was even human aggressive to boot, you could have been seriously injured. I love Pits, but I know their strength and what they were bred for. And I know what type of nasty owners a lot of them sadly have. I would say your reaction to Max being attacked is completely normal. When I was 11 or 12, my dog was brutally attacked by two dogs in a fifteen minute time span. The first dog (a JRT) bit her rump but the owner got the dog before it did any damage, and I walked home crying. Down one of the other streets to get home, a giant Chow jumped out a van's window and he attacked my dog. Two girls just stood there and laughed, and I was completely horrified. I just stood there crying even harder. I didn't know what to do or how to save her. My dog slipped out of her collar and took off for home, and that's probably the only way she would have ever survived that. Sometimes we just don't know how to react, sometimes we do, and other times we just know there's nothing we really can do in a specific situation. The best thing anyone can do is learn how to react and how to recognize that reacting would do more harm than good. ^^

  • I am so sorry. I don't think it was your fault, or either of the dog's faults. It was the owners' faults. I agree with Anastasia. They should have made sure they're dogs could not jump the fence, trained them or at least surpivised them around other dogs, and taken action when the attack happened. I cannot believe they did not apologize. That is incredibaly rude. They should have never even gotten a dog.

I think it's good that you didn't step in. You could have been injured. As for the pit, I'm sorry to say, but it should have been euthanized. Even if it was the owner's fault, a dog like that is dangerous. Obviously those owners weren't going to train it, it would be incredibly hard to rehome it, and it would take a lot of time to retrain it even if someone did agree to the job. Next time, it could have been a human attack.

Once again, I'm very sorry for you loss! I hope your new puppy stays safe!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss, and can't imagine how hard it is to deal with such an image.
It's one thing to have an attack happen when you are out of your house, but when it's in your own backyard, a place that should always be safe, it's a lot more horrifying, and unimaginable. I'm sorry Max died, but at the same time I am very glad you didn't step in, because you could have been seriously injured. Overall the situation is just really sad, especially since it sounds like the neighbors didn't appear to care about what was going on. I suggest keeping your cat inside to avoid any more problems, or buy a kennel that you can put it in when it wants to be outside. If they are throwing garbage and dangerous materials into your yard, then you can call your city and inquire about what can be done to stop them, because it's not legal. You should collect the trash, and keep it in a bag as evidence that you can hand over to whoever enforces the law(code enforcement, a police officer, etc).
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
Call the cops. Obviously, these people have their head too far up their asses. Also, call animal control and have the other PB taken away from them.

I hope I didn't offend you in any way by saying this. There was nothing wrong with your reaction, obviously you were in shock. I knew that I could've been seriously injured and I was bitten on my hand, but being injured is something I guess I was willing to risk. In this situation it disgusts me that the Pit Bull's owners did nothing, it's terrible. And the fact that they could possibly be trying to poison your other dog for what? revenge? also disgusts me. I'm sorry for what happened and for what you had to see.
  • One time my dog was loose then my friend thought since my dog hadnt seen her dog in a while he would run up to him, so my dog did run up to Sam but then Sam tried to bite him, and even tho I knew it would take forever to catch him if I did it I shoved Juve away and Sam bit my hand. Sam isnt very friendly now a days to any dogs I found out after my friend told me to take him. I actually caught my dog a few minutes later LOL with the help of a wolf. I know how it feels to be bit lol
