Car Accident Angel

Ok, so I've been thinking about this for a long while now. . . I recently got in a serious car accident. Both cars were totaled. The other car was going 55mph at 8:30 at night and clipped my back tire on the driver side. It was a FOOT away from my door. . . That night, the paramedic told me if I hadn't stepped on the accelerator when I saw the other car, I could've had a serious head injury. Possibly paralyzed somehow or even dead. Well me and my dog, Layla, were on my way to my grandmother's house to drop off some dinner for her. I was going on a four way intersection while on a green light and the next thing I knew, a huge rush of energy hit my body and my car did a full 360. . . . . I blacked out for a bit and when I came too, I saw lights and felt a pressure on my chest. I unblucked myself and unlocked the car and tried to open the door on my side. I couldn't open it, I was too dizzy. The paramedic person opened my door and asked me questions. . . I don't remember the questions and I don't remember much of that time. . . But what I do remember is that my dog was the pressure on my chest; it was her paw. The whole time she wouldn't let ANY of the officers or paramedics touch me. My mom had to come down and put her in her car. . .

That was about 3-4 weeks ago. I'm ok now. . . Still really sore and I'm going to physical therapy soon but yeah.
My dog, Layla on the other hand has totally changed. She follows me EVERYWHERE. She is soooo clingy. I don't care about it but I'm just so sorry.
That night she slept with me in bed. And its weird because its not like SHES scared. . . Its more like she knew I was hurt and didn't want anyone to touch me.
((She was sitting in the back seat during the accident and not a scratch on her.))

So my question is, is it possible for a dog to grow more protective over a person when something happens to both of them in a life or death situation?

Just curious what ever one thinks. . . Thanks

  • I don't see why any animal wouldn't grow more protective if that happens, your dog obviously has a very strong connection with you, and she probably just doesn't want you to get harmed again.

    Back in action?
  • I'd say it's entirely possible. There have been a lot of studies done on dog psychology, and the relationships between dogs and humans. Quite a few of them suggest that dogs are more aware of what's going on, than once thought. Now, whether she actually comprehends what happened and is reacting to it, or whether she is reacting to you, because you are putting off different body signals/emotional cues after going through such a scary thing...it's hard to say, but regardless, I'm sure she knows something isn't right.

I'm just glad both of your are safe!
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.

Yeah, she is a pound puppy and ever since I adopted her, we've always been together. Its just when we sit on the couch, she lays her head on my chest and gently kisses my hand. Not like theres something good on my hand, just like a tender lick. And I don't mind it because its not annoying or when I say no more, she stops. Its just she never used to do certain things like that before the crash. I think you could be right. Thank you :)

Thats what I read online too. . . I think, if I had to guess that she does know what happened wasn't normal and that it was life threatening. I'm a little sore but I'm still going on with my life. . . School, work, sports, ect. The only thing different is I don't drive anymore. Or at least for now. Too scared. Shes a smart baby, so yeah maybe the studies are true.

And thank you, we're both good lol I can't say the same about my grandmother's food though haha ;)
  • She sounds like an angel. Keep her around =)
She is. She is my baby and I love her to death. . . I'm kinda hesitant to take her with me where I go when I do start driving again. She loves laying in the back seat right behind me looking out the window or laying down on the seat while the windows are rolled down and the wind rushing in. I won't allow her to stick her head out the window while its rolled down though. And shes not allowed to run all around the car while I'm driving. She is 6 years old so she's not super hyper but does have jack russell in her haha Very obedient and just loves to please :)

I'm just scared that if we're driving to the dog park or going to visit my family again, that next time we won't be so lucky. . . I'm so happy that she wasn't harmed.

  • That is simply incredible! I would be so greatful!
My father (a retired police officer) worked with the canine unit for a while.
He said that one of his partners had a dog who was killed to save his handler.
The dog attacked a man who was threatening to shoot at the police, and the dog was shot and killed...but not after he severely injured the man to the point where he could no longer shoot at the police.
Dogs really do know how to protect.
What I adore most about my dogs is that they know when you just keep to cuddle. They can feed off your emotions. If I'm sad, they just curl up with you quietly. I love it.
I'm glad that you and your dog are okay ^.^
See, those stories just warm my heart. Its truely sad that the dog died, but the fact that it gave its life to save its handler is amazing. I'm pretty confident now that Layla, my dog, was guarding me. My mom told me yesterday after I asked her about it that Layla was crying in her car that night and scratching at the window. Like she wanted to get out. She kept growling at the officers. That night when I came home finally at like 11PM, the first thing that was at my side was her. I'm pretty sure if she was my height and had arms, she would've escorted me gently to my bed and tucked me in haha But instead she just followed at my feet and when I laid down, she curled up right at my chest and kept licking my hand genlty. (She does that when she knows something is wrong I noticed)

So right now I'm home sick from school and she is laying right at my feet with her warm head nestled on my left foot. ^^ I luffles her.
  • This is why I am a dog person. (Not that I have anything against cats, I just find that they are too independent for my taste). A dog knows when they are needed the most and knows exactly what to do to make you feel better. Whether it's curling up beside you and giving you a gentle lick to just say "I'm here and I love you." or getting you up to make you move because it's better than sitting around.

Cheyenne, my dog who passed away, was completely in tune with my mom and I. When I was going through my depression she knew that the only way I could fall asleep was if she was curled up beside me. She may have left in the middle of the night, but if I woke up I could hear the door to my room nudge open and she was right there again.

Seems like you have a guardian angel by your side, sounds like a real treasure.
  • I know what you mean. . . Two years ago, my mini dachshund, Madison passed. She was like my second mother. She was two years old when I was born and my mom is always telling me stories about how she acted like I was her pup. She even saved my life when I was 3 from a ferril cat. Then three years ago, Mick, my labxaussie mix, passed too. Me and him were SO close. The sad thing is, my parents new he was dieing and so they lied to me and sent me up to be with my aunt for a week as like a play date. I come back and they sit me down and tell me that they put him down. That was so hard. . . He was like my daddy. He actually saved my life as well. A stray pitxlab mix was at the park one day and my mom was getting something out of the car (this was when I was 10) and the dog charged right after me. For no reason too. My daddy came to my rescue and ended up getting torn to bits. . . But drew off the other dog. They caught the dog a little later and said that the dog was too person aggressive, so it was put to sleep. I'll never forget that day. Mick healed, just a couple puncture wounds and a cut ear. If he hadn't been there, I would've been a dog chew toy I know it.

There I go, rambling on about them lol (: I loves them.
It sounds like your dog was your angle too.

Dogs, I agree have that sixth sense. They always know.

And thank you, she is my treasure, my baby, my angle, my love (: <3
  • She did help me through a lot.

Sometimes it's nice to ramble on about our loved ones though. Past or Present!
