Fear of the Dentist

edited January 2011 in Vent
I am so scared of the dentist. Ever since I was little. I always thought it would get better, be like one of those TV shows where a little kid is afraid to go the doctor, then they get their shot and say "that wasn't bad!" That is not like me with the dentist.

1. The lady there was so mean. She said as soon she looked inside how bad my mouth looked because I had one little baby tooth that has broken, and she exaggterated and goes "Oh, you have all these little broken teeth, it's a mess." (The dentist said I only had one broken one and it was loose anyways so it wasn't a problem.

2. I could barely get the x-rays done because the lady was screaming at me to bite down on the thing and she was stabbing it into my gums. Then she took another one because she didn't like how one tooth looked.

3. The dentist said I still have some baby teeth that aren't even loose yet, abnormal for my age. So, I have to get 3 teeth pulled, 2 one day and another a different day. I get two visits to look forward to.

4. I have to go in the day after break, so I won't be able to look forward to break. Instead I'll be dreading it ending and be worrying about my dentist visit.

I will never ever like the denstist. In fact I hate the dentist. I'm not being dramatic, I am just so scared of it. Anyone have any tips on how to overcome my fear?

 • As long as you take good care of your teeth, then once all your adult teeth come in you hopefully won't have to deal with the dentist too much, at least not anything exceptionally painful like extractions.

Also, you might want to look into finding a new dentist if the one you currently have is making your experiences particularly unpleasant. I have a dental surgeon in my family, and a lot of my family members have been dental assistants, so I grew up with great experiences, and that definitely made visits easier, even though I knew I was going to be in pain. Nonetheless, the dentist's office will never be Disneyland. Sometimes it's going to hurt, and you're just going to have to metaphorically grit your teeth, and get through it. I think biting on those x-ray things are my least favorite thing about the dentist, but I just suck it up, because the last thing I want it to have them do it again.

You could also try reconditioning yourself. Pick something out that you really want, like a movie, article of clothing, book, etc. and tell yourself "If I get through this without a problem, I'll reward myself." Eventually you'll start looking forward to going, because you'll want the reward really bad. Have your family help you too, and don't reward yourself if you were difficult. That's how I got over being scared to have my blood drawn when I was on medication that required tests routinely. It helped so much that I'm considering getting certified as a phlebotomist to get through college.

You'll have to check with your dentist, but taking an MP3 device, or portable video player might be another option that will keep you distracted while they work on your teeth. The only problem I foresee with this is that the dentist has to be able to communicate with you, so taking ear buds, but only putting one in would be the best option.

One last option that I can think of is to take a mild sedative before going, so that you can be calm for your appointment, but that is something you will have to talk about with your dentist and family.

Good luck, and I hope it get's easier for you.
