Jaw Surgery x.x

edited January 2011 in Vent
Whell. Somewhere around Thanksgiving, my jaw started to pop repeatedly every time I open my mouth, and it crackles when I talk. I thought I may have just clenched my teeth the night before and it would feel better in a few days. No. It is still acting up. I can't eat anything hard to chew because my jaw pops EVERY time I open/close my mouth.

I had jaw surgery in 6th grade, where they had to break my jaw and re-set it to where it was supposed to be, and had my mouth wired shut for 8 weeks. I lived off of pureed food through a straw and Ensure for 2 months.

Lately, the past two or so weeks, my jaw has hurt non-stop. I can barely open my mouth to bite a sandwich, and eating is almost not even worth the effort it takes to chew everything. My mom is convinced that I don't have any cartilage between the bones on the left side of my jaw, and that's what's causing this. If that's the case, I'll have to have another abrasive surgery, braces put back on (after 6 years of wearing them, and having them off for almost 3 years now), and have my mouth wired shut for weeks again.

I have an appointment on Tuesday to have x-rays done. I'm hoping the orthodontist will just tell me I'm clenching my teeth at night and make me a night guard. If not, it's back to the oral surgeon for me. D;

  • Hopefully, like you said, it's just from clenching too much. At the height of my anxiety disorder I used to clench my teeth so bad that I dislocated my jaw on multiple occasions, and experienced many of the same things you are describing. Try sticking to foods like soups in the meantime, since chewing sounds like it's really painful for you.

Get well soon!
    I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
This almost happened to me, but I was lucky enough to have to wear this retainer-like device to correct my jaw for only eight months.
I'm really sorry for what you have to go through right now!

  • Sushi: I'm so not a big soup fan! I find that bagels are probably the hardest thing to eat (that I eat frequently), and they're one of my favorites. I eat a toasted bagel every morning before class, and lately I've had to skip the bagel and eat a soft nutri-grain bar or yogurt instead because it is SO hard not only to open my mouth wide enough to bite the bagel, but to chew it kills me. I didn't really think of anxiety as the problem, but I guess that could have something to do with it. I've been on medication for anxiety since I was seven. And oddly enough, I had the first anxiety attack I've had in years about 2 weeks ago. And it was a bad one, it caused me to get sick. >.<

Newf:I had an expander, which was an acrylic almost retainer-like thing that was glued to my back teeth on top, and we had to crank it twice a day and it expanded my jaw, my orthodontist was trying to prevent me from having to have surgery. That was in 4th grade, I believe, but it didn't do what it needed to to make my bite right, so I ended up having surgery anyway.

  • Jaw surgery is not fun. I had two teeth that were growing side ways and had to have them surgically removed. Then we found out that because they were had been doing this since I first started losing my teeth that my top jaw was all messed up.

I know what it's like to have to go through something similar. To think, all I wanted was straight teeth. Lol.
