10-day weekend. Fun, right?

edited January 2011 in Vent
I think the entire country got hit with this snow and ice and sleet and whatever else. Winter weather.
NC got hit with about 4-6 inches, depending on where you live. I live in the Piedmont region, so my area got around 4 inches. Fun, right? Powdery stuff that gets us out of school. Just one day. Wee!

...it kept on snowing. NC suffers from a lack of plow and salt trucks.
We didn't have snow on Tuesday, either.
Okay...
No school on Wednesday.
Fine.
No school on Thursday.
Wtf, county?
No school on Friday, and I'm bored out of my mind.
Saturday and Sunday. I'm still bored out of my mind.
And we still have no school on Monday.

The snow melted and it turned to ice.
The county next to us has had school since like Wednesday. Which, I don't understand because they have a lot more backroads than my county. Now we have a week to make up, plus the snow day we had on December 16th.

And winter isn't even over yet. We still have March, which is when it really seems to snow and put us out of school for about three days.

I just find this a bit ridiculous. Build in snow days at the end of the year. Put about eight in. If we have more than eight snow days, start taking away from spring break and holidays, such as MLK day and Memorial day and President's Day and whatever else. If we have no snow days, then the last eight days are optional teacher work days. It's simple logic, right? There's probably a ton of red tape, but I think it'd be worth it.

Anyhow, I can feel my spring break slipping, and considering I had plans with my friend Lupe to go to Lake Wylie, I really don't want to lose my spring break. -_-

 • 8 snow days? Uhh here in northeast we have 3 'calamity' days. We get dumped on extremely hard and they know it yet we only have 3 days. We used up 2 of them already so one more and they take away from breaks. I don't think you need 8 or anything. Yeah it's frustrating but it's weather. Nothing you can really do. Least you got some sort of downtime even if it was boring.

 • Bama hunches over like she has osteoporosis and says, "Back when I was a kid, spring break was a 4 day weekend at Easter. You got one extra half a day off from school at the end of each quarter for parent-teacher conferences and the only other break, outside of Christmas, was a 4 day weekend for Thanksgiving. You never knew for sure when school would get out until about March because if school got cancelled for snow or what have you, you made it up before summer vacation.

 • Tarn, I was guessing what I had in my area of Ohio. We never seemed to have to make up days. You live up in the Erie area, though, don't you? So you guys get hit harder than the southern parts. I never went up past Dayton.

Bama, that's basically what spring break is, I believe. I never much paid attention, all I knew is that I got to catch up on sleep. I don't get much during the week. x.x We don't get half days too often. We get them at the end of the year so we can leave after exams, though. That's basically what we do when it comes to making up snow days. I hate making up days, though. x.x It's a pain. I don't know if we have school this upcoming Friday or not. I knew we originally had it off...

 • Yeah, my point is though we get hit so hard but only get 3 days for 'calamities' (electricity, bad storms, snow, etc).

 • Well, could be worse. My daughter's senior year, they had to go to school 3 Saturdays to make up for snow days because they actually used all the ones allowed. If your spring break is just a 3 or 4 day weekend, they won't take more from it because the Friday before Easter is Good Friday.

 • I never understand your schools. lmao

I live in AB, and never in my entire school life have we ever had a snow day.
3 feet of snow? School's are still running. lmao (Not that everyone actually shows up ;P)

Just recently we got a huuuge snowstorm. Walking to the bus stop there was on drift almost up to my waist that I had to get through.. not fun.

Last year, when it was -55c with windchill, we still had school. My city was the second coldest place on the earth that day. First was Siberia or something.. but don't quote me on that. I went to school, but only about 1/3rd of the kids were there.
I actually find that kind of funny that you live up in the Erie area, so you get hit with the hardest of the Canadian front, and they allow you three days. I think in Hilliard we had 5 days. Not so sure, though.

Bama, I certainly hope not. I know we're going to be in school for every Saturday until the middle of February. x.x

Horse, I never really understood this either. I'm walking in drifts that are up to my knees in Ohio, when it was still snowing and going to school. That's not quite as much school as AB gets, but. It's still a lot for a 6 year old xD The only times we got out of school in Ohio was if it melted, and froze over. There would have to be a thick sheet of ice on the ground. As in, the plows couldn't break it up and the trucks couldn't salt it after it was broken up.

As I am lazy and don't feel like converting -55c to Fahrenheit, or Googling a converter, please tell me what that is xD

 • It's about -67F

And we used to have 5. Each year they are lowing it by 1 so in a few years we won't have any calamity days at all. It's lame considering we have had a blizzard before that covered peoples entire cars and even this guy's truck. He was stranded on the freeway unable to get out.

 • Our county was out last Monday-Wednesday, then had a two hour delay on Thursday. We already made up one day on Monday, when we were supposed to be out for MLK or whatever. North Carolina has never gotten snow like we have the past few years, in my 18 years living here, I've only seen snow like we got last week TWICE. I don't know about your county, but I know we have a lot of BS teacher workdays which go for make up days just in case. We don't have snow plows because we've never really had the need for them. We're in the south, we don't get snow. It's like a general rule. Our cars, as well as the people here, aren't used to driving on completely iced over roads, and it's not safe. Though, I worked last Sunday night, and everyone and their brother was grocery shopping because I guess they thought they'd starve if it snowed, which is a bit ridiculous.

We've had two really harsh winters in a row, and I assume the summer will be just like last year too. I know we were out last week because of the ice we got Monday night, because a lot of our roads were still completely iced over until Saturday afternoon, and there are still some icy spots where it's shady on certain roads a week later. I don't know about you, but I didn't really want to be driving to school and hit a patch of ice and get thrown off the road. Two of my friends wrecked their cars on the way to or home from school last week.

And Lake Wylie really isn't anything special, they have alligators. ;p

 • We have snow days for NO reason. I had two before Christmas break, and Ive had another since then, and Im possibly out tomorrow and Friday. Because our weathermen are drama queens and are all "oh no were gonna get 6 inches of snow everyone stock up on your groceries because its like a blizzard!" Which will probably only be a light dusting. Not to mention once rain, snow, or anything else wet hits the ground here everyone forgets how to drive. I have to make all of them up so Im already going to school a few days in June, and theyve taken away some other off days from us. I honestly dont care anymore because its been like this for the last couple years. However, I find it hilarious that the people who pray for snow days and are all excited about them are the first to start compling when we have to come in on a day when we were supposed to be off or when we get days tacked on to the end of the year.

I understand that the south isn't used to snow, but you'd think with all this global warming crap that they'd prepare for it better. My EES teacher told us that "global warming causes inclimate weather".
I wish we had made school up Monday, honestly. I don't think MLK would want us sitting at home playing COD Blackops while munching on Cheetos.

Everyone was at Harris Teeter or Wal Mart. Mom and I couldn't even get through the parking lot. I'm surprised it wasn't like Christmas 2009 where there was a three-car-pile-up in the mall parking lot.

Yeah, ice is dangerous. I'm glad it's gone, because the driving portion of driver ed starts tomorrow. ;D The snow isn't quite as bad to drive in. It's still dangerous, yes, but there are extra precautions that I saw no one take.
Ohio got hit pretty hard with snow, too, and surprised the entire population.

Summer this year is going to be like hell. I've got a decent feeling about that. I hate the extreme hot. The cold doesn't bother me too much unless my feet are cold. Then it bothers me. I'm not looking forward to the suffocating humidity and low oxygen levels.

Who says I'll be getting in Lake Wylie? I stay in the innertube. I don't move out of that. I hate lake water. I don't like putting my feet in places where I can't see. This includes oceans. I didn't even get into the lake at Apple Valley even though it was clear, just because something nibbled my butt. ;-;

Cybe, that's how people are here. Normally, one or two snow days don't bother me so much. I understand being off for a week because it iced over, and it was pretty nasty. Mom was stranded at the hospital until Wednesday morning, when it was slightly less dangerous to drive. However, it sucks when you have to make up the days :/

 • Snowdays are more or less, its cold outside days here. -facepalm- the district about a mile from here has had four snow days. and we have had -zero- snow. just 18F completely dry days. While My district has perfectly normal Guidelines for snow days, most days. I've been in this district for almost five years now, and had three district wide snow days. which was understandable in the Pacific NW, cause we rarely get snow. :D Floods. on the other hand. Pah. like a fourth of my school is closed off and classes are being held in the Student center and Staff rooms. Due to one of our wings flooding out -facepalm-

you can send some snow this way Sunn It'd be a great break from these flooding rains.
Haha, there's no more snow. I just about slipped and fell on my ass this morning walking to the bus stop, though, because of irrigation issues in the yard of a house a few doors down from me. I don't know why they have their sprinkler system turned on in the middle of winter, though o_O it froze over into black ice. Black ice + black mornings + lack of balance = me most likely falling. xD

Wetnose: Not really. I live kinda in the east of the country.. In about the middle of the east coast. NC rarely gets snow, but the past three years I've lived here, they get snow in late February to early March... This winter was the first winter since the 30's I believe where it snowed on Christmas Day [do you know how much I missed white Christmases? <3], and two heavy snowfalls in one winter so far has amazed the people here. Too bad it put us out of school for ten days. We weren't supposed to have school today.
