The Big Bad Pitbull.. not!

edited December 2010 in General Discussion
This is terrible... just terrible. I'm volunteer at a shelter in the neighboring town and they recently got a couple of Pitbulls from a suspected fighting operation in Chicago. One of the pitbulls, Edgar, is 10 years old, and blind. The shelter puts dogs that get along well in an outdoor pen so they can play. Edgar got put in with a Black lab mix called Gunner. I don't know much about Gunner, he's an older dog and he's not the nicest dog in the world. He's for the most part, independent. Well, Gunner attacked Edgar and ended up ripping Edgar's bottom jaw off. The people who saw the attack said Edgar didn't do anything to fight back. Who's the "vicious" dog now, huh?

As for Edgar, they had his jaw wired back on and he has a feeding tube, and he's in a foster home. We think he'll make it. Gunner, on the other hand, is in quarentine for now and they're uncertain of what will become of him. The shelter isn't No-Kill so having him destroyed may be an option, I know many of you won't agree with this but it isn't within my power, I'm merely a volunteer.

  • One of my family members had a lab and a pit bull. The lab was aggressive (we think she had rage). They came home from work one day, and the lab had nearly killed the pit bull. All that happened to the lab is her foot got bit. Needless to say, she got put to sleep. She was aggressive toward people, so that sort of thing happening to a person was a possibility, and clearly not something to risk.

If a dog can tear another dog apart like that, to me, it doesn't seem safe. However, if the dog was placed in the proper home perhaps something could be done to work on that. And it might do well in a people only home. I know some pit bulls rescued from fighting rings are horrid around other dogs, but love people. Strange they still love the ones that put them through hell.

At least the pitty has a chance for recovery :3 Poor thing. I hope the other dog gets some reevaluation and the proper thing is done in the end. Who knows where he was before this that could have made him that way =/

  • I hope he is able to recover, or if worse come to worse at least he doesn't have to suffer through life anymore. Poor thing sounds like he has had it pretty rough.

In my experience, labs and pits are some of the most dangerous breeds. Both need considerable socialization and training, or you're asking for disaster. As Nickel said, I hope the lab is reevaluated to see if it's something fixable, or if the dog is legitimately is too dangerous to adopt. It would be horrible for someone to adopt it, and have something bad go on at their home.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • I have had MANY encounters with Pit's and they have all been friendly. My brother has a huge, muscled up, black pitbull named, Boomer. A brown lab came into my brothers yard one time and tried to bite my nephew who was sitting within range of Boomer, so Boomer attacked the lab and snapped the labs leg with his jaw. We all know Boomer is a dangerous animal and that's why we watch him so close when little kids he doesn't know walks into the yard. My brother put up beware of dog signs and keeps boomer on a chain and runner 24/7. When Boomer attacked the lab and broke his leg he went to reach for the labs neck as i was running out there. my sister in law grabbed our nephew up and i wrapped my arms around Boomer's front shoulders and pulled back on him as hard as i could till he finally stopped pulling against me and i fell on my butt from pulling on him so hard xD He turned around and looked at me and started wagging his tail and licked me. So he went from vicious attack dog to loving pet. He was doing what he though he needed to do to protect my nephew from the other dog. Even the vet's and cop said that there was no sense in putting Boomer down because all he was doing was protecting his family and we had signs up saying to stay outta our yard and they said that because boomer was on a chain nothing could be said because the other dog was unchained and had threatened Boomer by coming into his range and messing with his property. The lab had to be put down of course... But I don't see why so many people Bash on Pit's ya know? Yea.. That's the only pit/lab aggression story I have xD
  • Mmm, I feel the way I described Gunner wasn't fair. He's a great dog with people. I've actually been in his kennel with him, worked with him, walked him, etc. He's a great dog when he's not around other dogs. They probably won't put Gunner down. I just I don't trust the shelter. I have a really close friend who works there, they put down a 14 year old Shih-Tzu for no reason, and said he was adopted. It's not the fact they put him down, it's the fact that they lied about it.

  • Pitbulls are amazing dogs with sensible owners that put the work into training and socialising them really well. It's a shame they're illegal here or I would have one. Hopefully Edgar will be ok but the lab does need to be reevaluated. Dog aggression doesn't mean he'll be people aggressive they're totally different things and he might be happy enough in a home as a single dog. That's what gets me when people say all pits are dangerous and they'll eat humans as soon as look at them. Yes they were bred to be dog aggressive duh they're fighting dogs but they had to live in the home with the handlers and had to be able to be seperated even at the height of the fight by handlers. Any dog that showed human aggression was shot. They aren't people aggressive unless idiots buy them to make themselves look 'ard having a snarling dog on the end of the lead and treat them badly to create this.
  • Pit bulls are the best! :]
I HATE people who hate pit bulls!

  • I hope he recovers.

And I hope the lab can be retrained and adopted out to a qualified, experienced family. I have two black labs and I hate to see them bashed. They really are wonderful dogs if they are trained correctly. Honestly, I've never had a pit. They seem like great dogs, but probably wouldn't be the best choice for my family. I hate to see any breed put down or critized. Personally, I think labs and pits get really bad reps.

In my opinion, it seems unfair that all these horror stories are about labs attacking other dogs. I really love them, but that's just how I feel. Blame the deed, not the breed. And that goes for every breed.

Yeah, I wasn't targeting you. Just saying that in general. I think family raised labs with love and training make wonderful dogs, but shelter labs can get dangerous sometimes.

  • I'm not saying the lab shouldn't be reevaluated, I agree. And I do think labs are great dogs. The lab that attacked Edgar is a mix. He looks like a lab, but because he is a mix, he could have a breed in him that is aggressive towards other dogs by nature.

Oh, and uh.. the lab isn't on the shelter's website anymore, he's not under "temporarily unavalible" either. I'll need to ask my friend, but he wasn't in the quarantine kennels when I fed the dogs in quarantine a few days ago. It's not looking good right now.

  • Labs are wonderful dogs with great temperments if they're from good lines and raised and socialised well. I've met a lot of puppy farm labs with awful temperments though but that's down to breeding.
  • The lab at the shelter is my first expirience with a bad tempered lab. I've known a bunch of them that were very sweet.

  • I've never had a bad experience with a lab. Many of my friends have labs, we know a lab breeder, we own two labs and they are great. They could be very powerful, dangerous dogs if they chose to be.

The dog in my story was family raised ;) We think she was ill. And, only reason mine has a lab is because that's what it was. There's really no way to change that. Labs are so popular and numerous, of course they're going to have a lot more stories.
