My Research Paper

Here is my research paper for school on 9/11. It had to be 5-7 pages. Critique please :) also I might try to start a thing for mini research papers for VP prizes :) tell me if you would be interested.

September 11, 2001
What started out as a normal day September 11, 2001 ended in a worldwide tragedy. The purpose of this paper is to learn more about 9/11.
September 11th started out as a great day and then turned. People
started getting to work at about 8:00 AM; there were approximately 20,000
people in The Twin Towers when they got hit by an airplane. At 8:00 AM the
American Airlines Flight 11 was making its ascent over Logan Airport, it carried 81
passengers, and a crew of 11. About ten minutes later Boeing 757 took off for
Los Angeles; it carried 56 passengers and a crew of 9. Both planes left with no
incidents. At 8:14 AM when the American plane didn’t respond to the air-traffic
controller’s instruction to increase altitude the air-traffic controller tried with no
success to contact the pilot. Then at 8:28 AM he overheard a strange
conversation from the cockpit, the voice said, “We have some planes, just stay
quiet and you will be okay. We are returning to the airport, nobody move.
Everything will be okay. If you try to make any moves, you’ll endanger yourself
as well as the people around you. Just stay quiet.”
Moments before, an American Airline reservations supervisor had received a call
from Betty Ong, a flight attendant on Flight 11, telling about a hijacking in
progress. She told the supervisor that two flight attendants had been stabbed;
one was dead and the other on oxygen. The hijackers also slit a passenger’s
throat then stormed the cockpit.
Another attendant on the flight told the controllers some men were wearing red bandanas, armed with wielding box cutters. At 8:45 a worker at the Twin Towers, Michael Wright, stopped on his way to his office to chat with his coworker Arturo Gonzalez, then as they were talking they felt a jerk, and were thrown, Michael landed against the wall then he adjusted his vision and looked around, everything had changed, Gonzalez was propped against the broken vanity, the marble facade on the opposite wall had shattered and a huge crack was open in drywall behind it. The sinks themselves had moved out from the wall, smoke came into the area between them. The whole building had shifted on its foundation. Wright could smell burning fuel. He could see people jumping out the windows to get free of the smoke.
At 8:41 AM the United’s Flight 175 seemed in trouble also. The pilot radioed in and said he heard suspicious conversation in the cabin and someone had said, “Everyone stay in your seats.” Only a few minutes later the plane went off course and was shut down to communication.
Around the same time air traffic controllers lost contact with AAL 77, a Boeing 757 en route from Dulles International Airport to Los Angeles, with 58 passengers and 6 crew members, at 8:56 AM, a few moments before the World Trade Center’s first crash, had doubled back toward Washington and turned off the transponder and didn’t answer repeated calls from the controller in Indianapolis. Moments before the United’s Operation Center heard about the plane crash into the World Trade Center a mechanic had called and said that United Flight 175 from Boston to Los Angeles had been hijacked and the pilots were killed and a flight attendant had been stabbed and the plane hijacked.
At 9:36 AM an airport supervisor reported a fast moving plane in the restricted area above the White House, it was found to be the missing Boeing 757. It was then reported to Secret Service, and they evecuated. By that time the plane had begun a 360-degree turn that would bring it nearly to ground level.
Two minutes after the NORAD rerouted the F16 Fighters –who were too far away to intercept- the Boeing 757 slammed into the west side of the Pentagon obliteratering itself and killing everyone on board.
In the mean time United’s officials were trying to communicate with the UAL 93 that was San Francisco bound, that had been traveling over Western Pennsylvania when the air traffic controller heard someone in the cock pit say, “Hey, get out of here!” then another accented voice saying, “This is your captain, there is a bomb on board. Remain in your seats, we will be returning to the airport.”
At approximately 10:00 AM Flight 93, after the hijackers were jumped by the passengers, crashed into an uninhabited field near Shanksville,Pennsylvania , 80 miles from Pittsburgh and 163 miles from the U.S. Capitol, its target.
People in the Twin Towers at that time had four choices, to be crushed, be burned alive, sufficating, or jumping out of the windows. Sadly, no one who jumped from above the plane crash survived.
Many people ask how the Twin Towers collasped from fire, no buildings this massive in size had ever collasped from fire. The Twin Towers collasped not because of fire but because of controlled demolition.
The Twin Towers were finished in 1973, they were dedicated at a ribbon cutting on April 4,1973. Each tower had 110 floors, 208 ft.x208 ft. at base, weighed 500,000 tons, the North Tower was 1,362 feet high and the South Tower was 1,362 feet high. The World Trade Center contained 97 elevators for passengers and 3 for freight. Each building was made with 200,000 tons of steel, 425,000 cubic yards of concrete, 43,600 windows, 12,000 miles of electric cables and the World Trade Center even had their own zip code which was 10048.
The Twin Towers are being rebuilt as of late 2002. It took 8 months to clear up everything at Ground Zero. There were 2,752 deaths in the Twin Towers that day.
They now have a new building called 7 World Trade Center which opened in May 2006 and they are building 6 new skyscrapers and a monument at the site of thw World Trade Center in honor of those killed in the attack.

 • First thing I noticed, is that you bluntly stated "the purpose of this paper is to learn more about 9/11" You never say that in your research papers. xD It should be made obvious by the first two sentences what your paper's about without flat out telling us like that.

Your paper seems to be full of sudden stops and even more sudden transitions. It really doesn't have much flow to it, and it seems more like you're just trying to belt out as many facts as possible without caring about how easy it is to read.

To be honest, I could only read the first couple of paragraphs before I lost interest. It's not that the topic is interesting, and it's not that you don't supply the reader with research, it's just that it doesn't have anything to catch hold of me and pull me in.

Remember, when writing papers or giving speeches, the two most important things are what you say first, and what you say last. The first thing will catch a reader or listener's attention, will make them want to hear/read what's next. The last thing will be what the reader remembers most.

 • When I write a paper I plan it out for example:

Intro (Begin with a sentences that will make the reader want to read more)

3 body paragraphs
ex: paragraph 1: explain what they are, how they came to be, what was the world trade center etc..
paragraph 2: What happened on 911, How did it happen, how did people react, how did people find out etc..
paragraph 2: The end result, how did people feel, what did they do for memorials, how many people died etc..

Conclusion (sum up the paragraphs)
