Pro-banners vs. banners and pro-layouts vs. layouts
I have seen many novices and some sponsors (not naming names or pointing fingers) that claim their layouts are pro and charge a ridiculous amount and all it is to their 'pro layout' is a banner with a stolen image with slapped on text and also just simple HTML lines with text which I can do in less then 2 minutes. To me a pro (professional) layout is a well put together and has taken more the 5 minutes to make. Same with 'pro banners' they just take an image from Google with text just slapped on it is NOT a pro banner and same with a pro layout. I will not pay for stolen images and lines that they are charging $2 mill + for. I absolutely hate when someone considers their banners pro when all they are images from google with text on them or done on bannermaker.com. /vent :/

 • You may or may not cause an uproar with such a topic. It's very opinionated; I know I have my own strong views regarding it.
First of all, "pro" is a miss-used term in my opinion. "Quality" is a much better adjective.
Second of all, I agree that you should not be paying for stolen images, period. If someone is trying to sell you stolen stuff, then you need to report it.
I'll stop there, because I'm bound to say some not-so-nice things to you if I continue, and that won't be productive at all.

 • I think I might have miss typed something as in explaining but I was trying to say like it just bugs me when someone says they have a 'pro' laylout when all it is is icons/polls bannermaker.com banners. And I know not everyone is good at html or have programs such as photoshop and gimp I just don't understand why they have to say pro layout or pro banner. I dont want this to be a uproar so I hope this clears somethings up :)

 • I think for the most part, people who use the word "pro" are using an advertising gimmick. In the real world, who are you more likely to buy a service from? The "professional" carpet cleaner or the handyman carpet cleaner? What makes the professional a professional? Does professional mean they can clean carpets in some way that the handyman can't? What product are you most likely to look at first? The professional grade toilet bowl cleaner or the normal cleaner?

Saying professional got your attention, didn't it? ;) That's the first point of advertising, getting people to look at your product.

 • You explained it just fine the first time. I just have a personal problem with the topic, because everyone's opinion of "pro" or quality differs. What's fancy to someone, is mediocre to another. You could offer advice, links, resource, etc. to these artists that you have a problem with, so that they can potentially meet your definition of pro, but at the same they could turn it down, because they find their definition of "pro" to be "better" than yours. Do you see my point? How would you feel if someone said your art wasn't "pro," when in your opinion it is?

In the end it's just a word that, as Bama has said, is pretty much an advertising embellishment nowadays. It really has no validity as a definition for quality anymore. I just ignore it, especially on VP(or any site that isn't specifically about art), since my definition of professional is more traditional, and I doubt many artists here, if any at all, meet that definition. I for one am not a professional artist, nor do I think I'll ever be one.
