Moving- I need advice!

edited November 2010 in General Discussion
We are going to be moving, not far, but to a new house. So, I have a couple of things I need tips, opinions, and advice on. All help is greatly appreciated!

Little Sister is Nervous...
I will not have to switch schools, but my little sister will. She does not know yet that she will be going to a new school, she was only told that she might have to switch schools. She is not very happy about moving. I know she will be even more upset once she knows she will be switching schools. I need to know how to help her stay calm about it. She is between the ages of 7 and 10 so she makes friends easily but she can be a little shy. I really want her to be able to adjust and not hate everything about moving, but I don't know what I will say or do. Does anyone have any advice on how to help her?

Decorating the Bedrooms!
So now that we have our own rooms, my parents said we can decorate them how we choose. The rooms are fairly small, sadly. I really want something creative, bold, fun, and unique that I won't grow out of for a while. As for my sister, I want to help her do something cute and fun and help get her mind off moving and switching schools. Here are some ideas I had for her:

She loves the colors pink and purple
White chalboard paint on one wall! Is it expensive?
Canopy over her bed-easy ideas for that?

For me:
Zebra and red
Cool little coach
Some sort of storage, I don't like my dresser
Dots on walls or floors?
Anything else?

Decorating the Basement!
There is a big basement in that house. It has white walls and no real ceiling or carpeting. Someone suggested putting cheap carpeting on the ceiling. It won't be decorated for a while but when it is I really want it to be a cool hang out, TV area. Cool ideas for that? Colors? Neat furniture?

Thanks!

 • Don't let her do pink and purple, let your sister do something that she won't grow out of. My room was painted pink and purple when I was 9... and well it still is XD
I hate it.
Chalkboard paint is a good idea though.
I've never moved so I don't know what else to say

 • I can't give much advice on the school thing. When I moved, and had to go to a new school I took it very badly. D:
Just comfort her through it. Ask her how each day went, and help her see the good things, even if it sounds like a bunch of bad things are happening. If possible take her to the new school when the kids aren't there, so you can tour it. If you go to the main office and explain to them the situation, then they generally don't mind letting you walk around. I got to do that, and it definitely helped to just walk around and see where everything was, so that I wasn't freaking out about where my classes all were on the first day.

Chalkboard paint can definitely be expensive, more than normal paint. I remember my mom wanting to paint the closet doors of the bedroom with it when I was a toddler, and it was like $35 for a small can of paint. We needed about 3+ cans for the closet doors, so we never did it. I imagine painting a whole wall would be over a hundred dollars, especially since you need multiple coats to really make it work and last. Maybe you coald just get a big piece of plywood wood or something to paint and hang instead? What kind of canopy do you want? I had one of the net material ones. They are cheap, and fun. Very girly. Just make sure you get a good hook, or they tend to get pulled down. I also remember having a toy hammock for stuffed animals that went with it. It was cute, and so I recommend it.

I don't know if those are all just things you are considering, or if you plan to put them together, but I would avoid putting two strong prints like dots and zebra stripes together. If you want a strong pattern, then do a pattern and one color. It makes a better impact, and looks cleaner. Zebra print and red would look really nice, but both are hard to put on walls. Maybe white walls, a red rug, and zebra and red accessories?

Hang out areas like your basement are best kept simple and comfortable, due to the fact they will be used by a lot of people(as opposed to just one like a bedroom). Avoid lots of accessories that can get bumped or knocked over, and get strong furniture. All of the hang out areas in my house have leather furniture, because it's sure easy to clean(you just wipe it down with a damp rag), BUT you can't let any sharp objects like keys, knives, pencils, etc. get on it, or you risk poking through the leather and permanently damaging it, unless you hire someone to repair it. In the loft where we have our little parties, and video games we have a leather loveseat recliner. Recliners are so comfortable for just hanging out. We also have a big corner nook table, which is a great option if you have the room. Colors are best kept warm, as most people find warm colors relaxing.

 • Zebra print stripes are awesome :D Like PrinceSushi said try going with a basic color for the walls, then for a colored rug and then accessorize it with like zebra print curtains or such. My room is lime green, I have zebra print everything including rug and comforter xD <3
My mom loves those purses. Every time we see someone with them, she points it out. I think she actually bought one, but doesn't use it as her main purse...or maybe I didn't let her(she has soooo many purses). lol. Sorry, that just reminded me of that.
